We thoroughly enjoyed our little side trip out to Chloride. The general store museum was very interesting with lots to look at. The woman working was full of knowledge and really explained the history of the town. Next to the museum is a small artists’ co-op with many beautiful things for sale at reasonable prices. We walked around the town a bit and drove out to both cemeteries. The town is all private property, but we felt very welcome. See more..

We recently spent a couple of days in Madrid and found the town to be quite interesting. By day, the town is filled with folks visiting the many art galleries and shops. There is a cute coffee shop which serves an excellent cold brew. We enjoyed meeting some of the locals when we popped out in the early evening for a beverage and food. The locals are friendly, we dug the quirky vibe. When we visited, the two restaurants in town that are open in the evening closed early, around 7-8 pm. In our opinion a stop in Madrid is recommended for those visiting the area. See more..

Very interesting ghost town which at one time had a population of 3000, but now only 2. There are some remains of some buildings, church, cemetery, and the head frame built from a kit from Carnegie Steel. 1866 was a time for silver and later zinc mining. It is named after Patrick Kelley who held a few claims. If he died in the area I did not find him in the cemetery. A lot of the buildings were hauled down to Magdalene. Do not take rocks without a permit, which you can get at the local Rock shop. You can drive partway to the mine, but we chose to walk. Carry water. See more..

We drove the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. It gives you an interesting variety of towns and scenery. While Madrid is a quirky town reclaimed from ruins by hippies, full of eclectic shops, Cerrillos is a step back in time. Very quaint in it's own quiet original way. Being from the country, I actually found it very charming. The dirt road and adobe houses speak to it's originality. A quick stop off 14, you can simply drive through or spend a little time and walk the streets, see the church, go to the state park visitor center, hike a trail in the park to learn more about the mining of turquoise and enjoy the quiet solitude. I actually enjoyed it's quaintness over the other towns. Great place for nature lovers and those who appreciate the outdoors. See more..
  6. 5.0 Hachita (2 reviews)

    Hachita image
This community is the Southernmost on the USA Continental Divide Trail (CDT), located 45miles/152kms North of el BerrendoCHIH-EUM/Antelope WellsNM-USA POE on a rolling NM81 (at junction with NM9 & NM146), and caters to an international group of hikers, bikers, travellers, and locals. The Hachita Food Mart is a HQ for most everyone; the Hachita Community Center is available for overnighters ($10usd pp), as is the Bike Ranch, also closeby, just immediately North hope of mile marker 43; both need to be reserved—also possible at the Food Mart! The old rail bed of the once-active Souther Pacific Rail Road is just awaiting rescue as a rail-Trail between ElPasoTX & Bisbee-DouglasAZ. Cycling alongside it on the all-weather road is nice, but I like to think about a segregated lane,,,! There is quite a history here, far more than on the historic sign, which Locals can give. It is well-worth stopping here! See more..

    Johnsons of Madrid Galleries image
Galleries of Fine and Fiber Arts This is the oldest, and largest gallery on the Turquoise Trail. We now represent over 100 fine artists and 50 fiber artists. The gallery was started by Mel and Diana Johnson, who met as students at the Art Institute of Chicago. Mel later taught figure drawing there, and architectural drawing at Texas Tech University. Diana has had her one of a kind dresses carried at high end department stores around the country. Today, the gallery is run by four generations of the Johnsons family. See more..
