Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) bought her house in Abiquiu in 1945, which is now owned by the Museum. The 5,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial-era Abiquiu compound was in ruins in 1945, and for the next four years, O’Keeffe supervised its restoration, which was carried out by her friend, Maria Chabot. One of the most beautiful and interesting places in Taos. The house, from the late 1800s/early 1900s, sprawls around its plot every which way, making it fun to roam around, and features lovely furnishings and artwork from several decades (we have a framed print of one of the paintings in our family room). This is a wonderful local museum. The history is easy to follow, and the displays are filled with interesting information. It’s clear the people who run this museum care a lot about their areas history, and it made me want to care too. I was really interested by a lot of the information they included, like the stories about the war and the Trinity site, Alamogordos early history, and the geology of the region (shown with hand crafted dioramas!).See more..
