  1. 5.0 Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center (1.190 reviews)
    - Very nice and complete visit.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center image
Excellent visitor's center when compared to others. Lots of parking, the people are friendly, and the cave tour processing was very efficient and easy to follow. Because they currently limit the number of persons going into the cave, we had purchased a reserved spot online ($1 each). Our time was 9:30, but we arrived early at 8:30 and they told us to go ahead early. Cool! The exhibits were great as well with a very informative film explaining how the caves got here in the first place. The gift shop is pretty good. It does carry lots of useless merchandise unrelated to Carlsbad Caverns, but it also had some good stuff. I also like that the restaurant maintains its charm from earlier days. See more..
  2. 4.0 Earthship Visitor Center (479 reviews)
    - Very Informative
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Visitor Centers
    Earthship Visitor Center image
An Earthship is a type of passive solar house that is made of both natural and upcycled materials (such as earth-packed tires). Earthships can be completely off-grid or partially off-grid. Earthships can be built in any part of the world, in any climate (with a permit) and still provide electricity, potable water, contained sewage treatment and sustainable food production. Earthships are thermal mass homes first, passive solar homes second. Whatever temperature goes into an Earthship, it will hold… and since it is also a Passive Solar House, it is also very tight and interacts only with the sun and the earth for heating and cooling, providing stable comfort year round in any climate. 20. 4.0 Santa Clara Historic Fort Bayard Visitors Center (1 review)
    - Nice information center about this area
Thursday: Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers
Santa Clara Historic Fort Bayard Visitors Center image
While visiting Fort Bayard, we were urged to stop at this Visitor Center on the way back. It had just recently been opened (end of March 2019), in the former National Guard Armory, located just north of US Highway 180. Besides being a Visitor Center (with lots of brochures and information about the area), it also, housed the overflow of artifacts from the Fort Bayard Museum. Historic photographs are on display, plus exhibits that trace the history of Fort Bayard from its founding in 1866 up to the present. We stopped in on Saturday July 20th, and were warmly greeted. Watched a 15-20 minute slide show about Fort Bayard. I think this is meant to be watched before one visits the Fort, however, I felt we could relate to it better, after having visited. Things looked familiar to us, and we were happy to hear the background history. The volunteer was very knowledgeable, and we had a truly interesting conversation about the surrounding area. We asked about a restaurant for lunch, and were encouraged to go to Hurley, which we did. Also, were told about the Model Train Museum next door to the restaurant, which we, then, visited. All in all, it was a very good stop. See more..
