The overlook is on NM-502, just a few miles east of Los Alamos. Since it is a pull-off on the highway, this doesn't require taking any detours and you can judge for yourself if you want to stop here for five minutes or thirty. It is easier to access driving westward on NM-502, since it is on that side of the road, and just around a curve in the road making it a tad harder to turn your car left, if driving eastward from Los Alamos. Easy accessibility aside, there are some wonderful views of New Mexico landscape, with blue skies strumming as a perfect backdrop. The panoramic view is breathtaking, the valley will make for some unforgettable sunset photos if you are there in time for the setting sun. Even otherwise, the valley is a very peaceful site to look at and enjoy for at least a few minutes, before heading on out to your destination. See more..

Make sure you do this scenic drive after 6p (my drive was in July) or very close to dusk. The elk come down the mountains to munch on the green vegetation! I saw several herds! Have the camera ready because they are skittish and run right back up into the trees. Saw cows and horses and lots of yellow wildflowers in the fields. Nice way to end the day! See more..

We stopped here along the road on our way from Cloudcroft to White Sands NP. We were treated to a majestic view of the canyon, the surrounding forest and the white sands in the distance. It is definitely worth the stop to take in the lovely views and take a picture or two. See more..

Drive up was gorgeous. While there are lots of switchbacks, it’s a typical mountain drive & very doable in summer. The vista is gorgeous. We took a picnic and ate dinner on the benches as the golden hour approached. On the way down, we were lucky enough to see a herd of elk, a herd of wild horses and some deer. All in all a fabulous experience! See more..
  7. 5.0 Sierra Blanca Viewpoint (1 review)
    - Instagrammable and awesome
    Spent < 1 hour Lookouts
This is a New Mexico Official Scenic Historic Marker that you do not want to miss when you come to the area. The drive is wonderful and from this stop you will be able to appreciate the beautiful Sierra Blanca; an ancient volcano that rises more than 7,300 feet above the Tularosa Basin to peak at 12,003 feet. During the winter the snow covers Sierra Blanca (and probably the very spot where you are standing, as well) and you will want to get your camera out and practice your panorammic shots. This is so appealing because just an hour and some away there is an amazing group of white sand dunes covering a big section of the Basin. See more..
