4.0Alien Zone Area 51(404 reviews) - The Alien Experience Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
I would go to Roswell again if I’m the area. I was not prepared for the amount of information presented at the international UFO museum, next time I would dedicate more time for that experience. The Alien Zone Area 51 was super cheesy, but fun for kids. I will also make time for the Roswell museum and the Roswell UFO tour in the future. There are many cute and fun shops downtown and the people of Roswell were the nicest. I look forward to my next visit.See more..
4.5Tee Pee Curios(259 reviews) - Worth a Quick I-40 Detour, Browse and Fun Pictures of Interesting Route 66 Outdoor Kitsch Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
While driving from Flagstaff to DC, the male half of IllyCoffeeDrinkers and one of our kids swung by Tee Pee Curios for some fun pictures of Route 66 outdoor kitsch (photos attached). The neon sign out front is classic, along the side of the shop is a modified flatbed Ford truck with a very unique skeletal creature riding on the back, and one of the outside walls has a large picturesque Route 66 mural that is great for photographs in the bright New Mexico sun. Around Tee Pee Curios, other parts of Tucumcari seem like a ghost town; if you are into taking photos of run-down Route 66 sites and memorabilia, this town is also worth a brief detour off I-40. The town of Madrid (pronounced with the accent on the first syllable: MAD-rid, not Ma-DRID) was founded in 1869. Now a pleasant artisan town with several shops and a couple of restaurants. 4.5Perry Null Trading Company(100 reviews) - Best trading post Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
After visiting more than a dozen trading posts and vendors of Native American crafts in the past week or so, I've concluded that Perry Null is by far the best. There is no kitsch here; only top quality jewelry, rugs, baskets, belts and other goods. The staff is terrific. I was assisted by a young woman who was very knowledgeable about the items that interested me. When I asked a question that she couldn't answer, she got an answer for me from another staff member who had greater expertise. You can learn a lot about Native crafts and artists here and pick up some good quality pieces. The prices are fair and about the best you will find. They also have some merchandise that you won't find anywhere else. I will definitely come back .See more..
It was recommended that we drive NM-14 from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. We listened, and we pleased to stumble upon eclectic Madrid..more pleasing we wandered into the Chocolate Shop. Was immediately greeted and offered a taste of green chili, lime and ginger chocolate. Reminded me of chocolate 'bark'. I had recently sampled chocolate in Old Town Albuquerque so wasn't expecting much. For me, this chocolate was over the top...unique in flavors, creamy, left me wanting to sample more. Left with several flavors. Throughout our road three week road trip, in the evenings, I delighted in this chocolate with a glass red wine. Don't miss out if you enjoy chocolate.See more..

It told the story about the sheriff shooting Billy the Kid had many artifacts and newspaper accounts of the event. All very believable and well displayed. What a fantastic vista - my GPS Altimeter was reading 10,650 above sea level. Except no sea in sight. Correction the sprawling sea of Albuquerque easily seen way out and below. We were able to navigate the switch back road to the Sandia Crest just days after the post ice thaw re-opening! Cool road, we saw a number of "Speed Racers" in the sports cars navigating the thrilling curves. Thank goodness there weren't any signs of any go over the high side. The Gift House and Restaurant were just re-opened to, but staff were outside chipping away at the residual piles of ice. We would like to visit the indoors, we chose not to interrupt the chipping process. I'm sure it's a pleasant comfort belly refilling station and trinket pitstop.See more..

4.5Toadlena Trading Post(17 reviews) - Step Back in Time Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops • Points of Interest & Landmarks Can you imagine devoting six, eight or more months of your life to shearing sheep, carding and spinning their wool, then weaving that wool into a rug that will survive for hundreds of years? That's exactly what the Navajo weavers did in the past and continue to do today, and the product of their labor is on view and for sale at Toadlena. Owners Mike and Linda Winter have restored this old trading post to look much as would have "back in the day." The Post is on Navajo land north of Gallup in Newcomb, NM, on highway 491. The selection of rugs for sale is one of the finest to be found, and the display in the museum changes yearly or so. We were there for a fabulous display of saddle blankets. If you're lucky a Navajo woman may be weaving in the courtyard and will answer your questions. If a weaver isn't working, the other staff members are both knowledgeable and friendly. There is a little jewelry and Mike's two books for sale, but this is really the place for fine Navajo rugs.See more..
