We drove here on a whim when we saw the road sign for it. It's in the middle of nowhere-deliberately-as it has to be uncontaminated by cell phone signals, etc. Seeing these 27 huge radiofrequency receivers up close and learning how they work individually, how they work together to form high-resolution images of distant galaxies (all day), how they can be moved along railroad tracks to space them out optimally and then directed to point at the same location was a very special experience that you won't find almost anywhere else in the world. It was well worth the drive. Be sure to turn your cell phone to airplane mode and then turn it off.See more..
4.5Murals of Tucumcari(287 reviews) - Amazing murals...fun driving around! Points of Interest & Landmarks
This may be one of the best hidden gems we've encountered in all our travels. After many years of driving past Tucumcari, we FINALLY stopped in to get to know the town. We read there were at least a hundred murals, so we spent about an hour just driving around slowly and checking them out. There is no particular order or route to follow, so it was like driving around a huge art museum. Come slowly around a corner and WHAM...there's a mural of the old west, or a mural of route 66, or a mural of a lake from the side (including the fish underwater), or a portrait of someone you don't know, etc. Some murals are small and you need to look sharp for them. Others are large, or even enormous. Magnificent! I am so glad we did this.See more..

This is a working restoration operation staffed with skilled volunteer welders, pipe-fitters, mechanics and many other trades. Free tours are available to visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You'll be issued a hard hat and a personal guide who will present a hands-on introduction to this very large and majestic locomotive, cab, and its tender! Adults, children, and groups are welcome for tours, 9AM - 2PM. You can call ahead to check if the operation is closed due to adverse weather. Parking is free and donations are important to keep the restoration moving forward. Merchandise is available for purchase from the gift shop. Bring your camera.See more..

4.0Chino Mine Vista Point(127 reviews) - Make a picnic basket and watch Points of Interest & Landmarks
We had brought a picnic basket so we ate our lunch and watched the trucks come and go. The vista for viewing is great. They have signs that give explanations of what is happening. There are holes built into the fencing so you can take pictures easier. The colors of the mine are fabulous so go on a sunny day to get great pictures. The large trucks that go by get really small looking when down in the pit. Make sure to wave at the drivers; they may honk back. It is hard to imagine that they drive the trucks 24 hours.See more..
4.0Route 66 Monument(126 reviews) - Trip Advisor photo misleading for this monunent Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
We drove by looking for the deserted motel and old graffiti-covered pickup as shown in TA for this attraction. Stopped in the Route 66 Museum and was directed to the concrete base with the chrome-looking 66 with the tail fin from a 60s era car in their parking lot. I was able to climb up the base for a photo op. Sad to see so many deserted reminders of a once exciting era in faded and run down buildings.See more..

4.5Taos Drums(68 reviews) - Wow, Way More Than Drums Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
It seems like a forgotten warehouse in the middle of nowhere, & then you enter a charmed space. We were lucky to be able to see some of the drum makers stretching the hide for the drums & were blown away with the vast array of rugs, drums, carvings, etc. It was easy for our group of 5 to each find something authentic to buy & to remember our visit to NM. The staff is friendly & knowledgeable. Taos Drum might appear off the beaten path but it's a definite museum of native & historical merchandise worthy of a visit.See more..

Such a fun, interesting drive and amazing site! Highly recommend taking the backroad rather than the interstate at least one way. We had the entire site to ourselves on a Friday afternoon. 4.5Anderson Scenic Overlook(42 reviews) - A must-do stop for some phenomenal views! Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lookouts • Observation Decks & Towers
The overlook is on NM-502, just a few miles east of Los Alamos. Since it is a pull-off on the highway, this doesn't require taking any detours and you can judge for yourself if you want to stop here for five minutes or thirty. It is easier to access driving westward on NM-502, since it is on that side of the road, and just around a curve in the road making it a tad harder to turn your car left, if driving eastward from Los Alamos. Easy accessibility aside, there are some wonderful views of New Mexico landscape, with blue skies strumming as a perfect backdrop. The panoramic view is breathtaking, the valley will make for some unforgettable sunset photos if you are there in time for the setting sun. Even otherwise, the valley is a very peaceful site to look at and enjoy for at least a few minutes, before heading on out to your destination.See more..
4.0Billy the Kid’s Grave(39 reviews) - A piece of history. Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries
Considering Fort Sumner is in the middle of nowhere I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Kid’s grave twice but each time the museum was closed. Both times on days it should have been open. The grave itself is always open and must for true Billy the Kid fans. See more..
This light sanctuary on the United World College campus(5 miles north of Las Vegas, NM) is not all that well known, even among locals. 4.0Socorro Historic Plaza(39 reviews) - The Heart of Old Socorro Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
So many travelers who stop in Socorro for gas, a meal, or a room only see the California Street "strip" with its service stations, restaurants and motels. A block away is this lovely little plaza that was the heart of Socorro before Interstate 25 was built. You can stop in the park and enjoy the flowers, lawn and shade trees. It is very well maintained and peaceful. You can see the architecture of the old buildings, shop at the two unique gift shops that face the plaza or enjoy refreshments at the Capitol Bar. To find the Plaza from California Street, turn west on Manzanares Street. The Plaza is straight ahead.See more..
5.0The Couse-Sharp Historic Site(32 reviews) - Good historical and cultural background of Taos art Points of Interest & Landmarks
Docent was very informative about the artists and the Taos society of artists and even the son had an amazing mechanical shop and 1940 mobile repair for airplanes. We easily spent 1.5 hours there at no charge but they do appreciate an donation to keep foundation going for the up and coming artists they are trying to educate and help. The artwork shown was from Sharp, Couse and Gene Kloss as well. I'm generally not an art type person but found it very interesting.See more..

4.5The Lightning Field(24 reviews) - Trip of a lifetime Points of Interest & Landmarks • Valleys
Others will tell you it's light, lacks a punch, is too subtle, or was disappointing because lightning didn't strike a lightning rod. If you're looking for whiz bang, then maybe this isn't the artwork for you. For me, if was the experience of a lifetime. The nuance, the subtlety, the magic that comes with understanding your place in the world, in time, and in space, is nowhere made as clear and transporting as here. It is a mecca for lovers of minimalism. I will return.See more..
4.0Oasis State Park(24 reviews) - Beautiful pond. Clean park. Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
My husband and I went to Oasis State Park on a Tuesday afternoon in July. There was one couple fishing and a family of 6 having a picnic. The park has a pretty medium sized fishing pond with a trail around it. The pond looked very shallow (about 4 feet). Many benches and picnic tables (some covered) were around the pond. We saw a few small fish. The couple caught a nice size catfish. There were very short trails around the campsites. The park had some trees and it was clean. A few ducks were swimming in the pond. Swimming and wading in the pond is not allowed. I have no idea how they keep that pond at a perfect water level. The restrooms were ok. We spent about an hour at the park and that included a quick picnic. We paid $5 at the self-pay booth upon entering the park.See more..

We only visited Cox Canyon Arch because the google map was reflecting "Aztec Sandstone Arches" as permanently closed. maybe, maybe not, but since we were had limited time time, we only went to the one we knew we could find. We had the right road but we almost missed the arch. We went too far, turned around and stopped to ask some workers and we just happened to be in the right place. We just didn't see the arch until the worker pointed it out. There are NO SIGNS the way we went. We enjoyed the surrounding area of the arch. We walked to the end of the canyon and got some terrific pictures of the canyon and the arch from a distance. We did not however go right up to the arch. We couldn't find an easy route up and we're a little too old for rock climbing.See more..
4.5Monjeau Lookout(19 reviews) - A MUST SEE IF YOU ARE IN RUIDOSO Points of Interest & Landmarks
The road to the top is one of the most scenic in the area. The road is a little rough in spots but we saw all types of cars and trucks that were able to navigate it. We could see a gate across the area at the top so we parked in a large parking area on the right. There were some campers in tents there. Great views. The area is flat and easy to walk around,See more..

4.5Toadlena Trading Post(17 reviews) - Step Back in Time Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops • Points of Interest & Landmarks Can you imagine devoting six, eight or more months of your life to shearing sheep, carding and spinning their wool, then weaving that wool into a rug that will survive for hundreds of years? That's exactly what the Navajo weavers did in the past and continue to do today, and the product of their labor is on view and for sale at Toadlena. Owners Mike and Linda Winter have restored this old trading post to look much as would have "back in the day." The Post is on Navajo land north of Gallup in Newcomb, NM, on highway 491. The selection of rugs for sale is one of the finest to be found, and the display in the museum changes yearly or so. We were there for a fabulous display of saddle blankets. If you're lucky a Navajo woman may be weaving in the courtyard and will answer your questions. If a weaver isn't working, the other staff members are both knowledgeable and friendly. There is a little jewelry and Mike's two books for sale, but this is really the place for fine Navajo rugs.See more..

4.5Santo Domingo Pueblo(14 reviews) - Unforgettable 'Great Corn Dance' Feast Day! More than 1000 of the pueblo's Indians, of all ages in various colorful costumes & head dresses, danced, drummed and supported the participants. It was a reminder of the faith, dedication and rich history of these people...and a humbling testimony to their pride in their unique cultural heritage. The pueblo itself dates back to at least the 1500's...in 1598, the Santo Domingo Tribe was designated as the Capitol of all 20 Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. Well worth visiting, but no pictures or alcohol, please!See more..

4.0Ghost Town(9 reviews) - A touch of the Original New Mexico Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Ghost Towns
We drove the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. It gives you an interesting variety of towns and scenery. While Madrid is a quirky town reclaimed from ruins by hippies, full of eclectic shops, Cerrillos is a step back in time. Very quaint in it's own quiet original way. Being from the country, I actually found it very charming. The dirt road and adobe houses speak to it's originality. A quick stop off 14, you can simply drive through or spend a little time and walk the streets, see the church, go to the state park visitor center, hike a trail in the park to learn more about the mining of turquoise and enjoy the quiet solitude. I actually enjoyed it's quaintness over the other towns. Great place for nature lovers and those who appreciate the outdoors.See more..
4.0Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex - Bernardo(9 reviews) - Smaller than Bosque del Apache but great for photographers Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers • Scenic Walking Areas

4.0Los Alamos Project Main Gate Park(5 reviews) - A unique piece of history Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
For all its historic and scientific importance, this is now, as the attraction title says, a gate. Well, a small building looking old as it should, as you enter the city of Los Alamos from east. It is on NM-502, and thus makes for a quick and easy ingress and egress. The significance of this place is that it was the main entry point to enter the labs here, which has a fabled (infamous?) history as being the cradle of Manhattan Project. We saw a restroom here, but unsure of whether it is for active public use. A place to get out, snap a couple of photos and get right back in to your car. A definite visit, even if a short one for science and history buffs.See more..
