  7. 4.5 Chimayo Trading & Mercantile (34 reviews)
    - Amazing, eclectic... and fairly priced
    Art Galleries
    Chimayo Trading & Mercantile image
This was our first stop in Chimayo, and we really had to hold ourselves back from buying on the spot. So much great stuff, but after all, we had plenty of other places we wanted to check out before pulling the trigger on our purchases. Well, we visited those other places, even bought a few small items, but we came back to Chimayo Trading. The owner, John, is knowledgeable, engaging and applies no pressure. He can let his extraordinary selection speak for itself, but if you want to know more, just ask. The man knows his stuff. And after 25 years in the business, he'd better. We walked out at closing time with two incredible paintings and a 100+ year old hand-carved yoke that'll make an incredible textural statement on our wall. The prices were fair - or a steal when compared to 30 minutes down the road in Santa Fe. New stock comes in all the time, so if you're in the area, stop in - you'll be glad you did. See more..

  12. 4.5 The Artist Gallery (16 reviews)
    - Great way to support local artists!
Spent < 1 hour Art Galleries
    The Artist Gallery image
I enjoyed an hour here, checking out art by local artists. Jewelry, stained glass ornaments, little sculptures and plenty of paintings. I definitely recommend you shop here as a way to purchase and respect local artisans. There were gifts from around $5 on up. My only wish was that there had been more that reflected the local area, would have been cool to get some really cool shots from Carlsbad Caverns or more art or jewelry that reflected that. I ended up on a cute little framed mushroom drawing, a star ornament to take home and a fun little bat sculpture. I would have much rather bought more specific themed items that would have reminded us and reflected on the trip more specifically. But I understand also that it's not a tourists gift shop. Looking for a long necklace to wear with a handmade sterling silver and turquoise pendant. Found a beautiful handcrafted chain that is a perfect fit! Artist's name came with the piece, making it all the more special, and the price was very do-able. The ladies who assisted us (I believe, one was the owner) were so kind, fun, and the sweet girl who had welcomed us and actually took care of the sale, reminded me of one of our granddaughters! 32. 4.5 Than Povi Fine Art Gallery (5 reviews)
    - Art Gallery, Yes, sort of. But Also Primarily A Fabulous Indian Trading Post!
    Spent 1-2 hours Art Galleries
Than Povi is really a trading post and not an art gallery. It is one of the better ones you can visit for certified authentic Native American Arts. Than Povi began its life as a trading post/gallery near the Gabriel's restaurant. It recently and smartly moved into an older trading post near the San Ildefonso Pueblo. It looks like a low slung adobe casa down by the creek, but when you open the front door and walk inside...its new and modern and a wonderful place to look for genuine art quality jewelry, pottery, weavings, animal skins, and even local chile in season. Do not miss this if you are near San Ildefonso, Bandelier or Los Alamos!! See more..

    - Gorgeous tiles
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Art Galleries
    Syzygy Tile Factory image
We have an entire collection of tiles at home. Have always loved and appreciated them. So, when we were told that we can take a tour, and see how they are made, we were very excited. Stopped in today (Friday 7/19), and found out that there is no self -guided tour. We need self paced tours now, as my husband has a back problem. The guided tour here, is 45 minutes long, and one must keep up with the tour. So, unfortunately, we had to pass it up. However, we could wander around their lovely showroom, where the finished products are displayed. There are various, very beautiful, artistic tiles here. Some seem to have been inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. See more..

Each summer we go up to Ruidoso for a day to enjoy the cool of the mountains. We have never gone further than Ruidoso, but this time we went on to the small town of Capitan. Capitan is a short scenic drive past Ruidoso and well worth the drive. Drive into the center of town where you will find what appears to be a renovated bank that is now a folk and fine art store. We have lived in the southwest on and off and visited many times and are used to the typical southwest art stores. This one is different and well worth the side trip. The store is called Oso Art, from folk to fine. See more..

Spent < 1 hour Art Galleries
    Rift Gallery image
The Rift Gallery in Dixon, NM is a lovely contemporary art gallery offering locally made pieces of art. Each piece is unique to the artist who created it. I loved browsing the gallery and the attached stone yard. The owners of the gallery are a wonderful couple and they have their own pieces for sale in the gallery. I ended up buying several pieces of the ceramics created by one of the owners of the gallery. Not only were the pieces beautiful but they were functional for use in my home. I never have enough bowls, plates and cups in my house so finding this gallery was a real treat. I also loved the original stone carvings that are featured in the store. On most days you can talk to the artist himself about the fascinating art of stone carving! - A diverse and interesting warehouse sized gallery of Asian and American art and artifacts
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 AM Art Galleries • Antique Shops
One of the most interesting galleries and, personally staffed by John Bosshard, an even more interesting curator of art and artifacts from Asia and the American West. The gallery also is selectively stocked with local art. Anyone who loves art enough to make the trek to Georgia Okeefe's home will love to tour this vast warehouse of treasures. We purchased an Indonesian Jaraik which is a spirit carving made by a Mentawai tribe artist sometime before WWII. John shared his deep knowledge of the back story supplemented by scholarly documentation. Also and noteworthy, the wooden piece was damaged in shipping. I had a months long dialogue regarding the insurance claim and restoration. In the end John sent me a check to cover my costs and was a pleasure to deal with throughout. PS my Jaraik is fully restored and sits proudly on our mantel and makes for quite the conversations. Overall a great travel experience. See more..
