  5. 4.5 Palace of the Governors (1.010 reviews)
    - Native arts by native artisans (with no middleman)
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Palace of the Governors image
On a good day (probably a weekend), the long, covered entry front to the historic building will be awash in blankets claiming the sales-front territory upon which vendors will display their wares. This is the real-deal. Everything is made by the artisans who have licenses to display their native works. Primarily jewelry but not limited to metal works, vendors will display their pottery works, and any/every artistic rendering a human mind can dream. All vendors must be licensed. The gentleman from whom we bought some impressive earrings displayed his license. Look him up, his work impressed us. I don't believe this is a barter situation, their prices are pretty fair and not open to haggling. Do stroll up and down the promenade and take in all the excellent hand-crafts for sale. These are some mighty talented artists! See more..

    - Exceptional!
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
    Unser Racing Museum image
A virtual must-see for any motorsports fan and very interesting for others! My wife and I visited the museum again after a few years in honor of the passing of both Al Sr. (12/09/2021) and Bobby (May 2, 2021) this year. Once again, we got to enjoy an extremely interesting, detailed, and well presented history of America's most successful racing family. Secondary displays put the Unser story into context. With 9 wins at the Indy, multiple Pikes Peak triumphs, and success in so many other top motorsports venues, there is an incredible story to be told, and the museum rises to that challenge. As I understand, Al Sr. provided the inspiration for the museum's creation, and his wife Susan applied exceptional organizational skills. Al and Bobby, RIP. See more..

    Route 66 Auto Museum image
We approached the museum and gift shop from the west and easily spotted it with the iconic yellow car on the top of the enormous sign pole. Vintage cars including a yellow taxi and Edsel are on the outside of the building. A quirky and fun place, you are greeted by the owner upon arrival as you enter into the gift shop portion. You can buy lots of things, but there is also memorabilia from the Mother Road as genuine antiques. We didn’t enter the museum portion as we were a bit short on time. The owner was sweet, so we picked up a few things and meandered down Business Route 40 headed for our next little piece of the 2,300 mile puzzle. See more..

    National Hispanic Cultural Center image
I really enjoyed this museum. I went early one morning, as soon as they opened. There were very few visitors. I LOVED it. I was able to take my time, enjoy the exhibits, read the literature, and record videos (in appropriate areas) without having to wait for people to pass by or listen to background noise. I really enjoyed the permanent exhibit and the Adam an Eve one. I loved the car exhibit. I really enjoyed everything I learned about “lowriders” as they relate to the history of New Mexico. The staff was great. The thing about going early is the entire staff is there for you - to answer any questions you may have. It’s like a private showing that you pay a few dollars for. I also really enjoyed the gift shop which has the largest collection of pinatas I have ever seen. See more..

The museum is not very big; an hour is enough time to see everything. But what a collection of minerals! Mostly arranged by regions of the world where they were found, the gem samples have tremendous variety in size, shape and color. Seeing the difference between gold as found in the ground and pyrites ("fools gold") was particularly interesting. What a treat to discover this museum! I had hiked the rim of nearby Capulin Volcano and asked the ranger at the front desk what the museum was like. She said that there was not a lot of information on the famous Folsom Man but that the drive was beautiful and the museum was worth a visit nonetheless. Spent an hour here looking at the interesting artifacts of ranch and rural living in this small town. I loved the geology specimens, especially the fossilized turtle shells. Dinosaur tracks, replicas of Folsom point arrowheads, lots of photos, tools for farming, housekeeping, and ranching abound. Lewis Antique Auto & Toy Museum image
If you're in the area, by all means save a few hours to wander around this place. The admission was the best money we have spent in some time. So many vehicles in various states of restoration or "rusteration" all still classic beauties in their own way. Mr. Lewis is passionate about cars and is more than willing to share knowledge. While he's not doing restorations or driving himself any more he shares his collection with a great deal of pride, so be sure to take some time to chat with him, it will be the best part of your visit. This place is also a photographers dream. See more..

Most of the famously familiar names of the second half of the 19th century at least passed thru this area because of the nearby Santa Fe trail and lure of wealth from gold, land or trade.
