The Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers with hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit. Renowned Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin donated the Keeper of the Plains to the citizens of Wichita on May 18, 1974.Since the sculpture's installation to commemorate the United States Bicentennial, it has become a symbol for the city of Wichita and a tribute to the local American Indian tribes. in 1974. The 44-foot Cor-Ten steel Keeper of the Plains statue is now 30 feet higher than before with its new pedestal, surrounded by a plaza which describes the Plains Indian way of life. The Keeper also serves as the focal point of an eight-year, $20 million restoration and river beautification project completed in May 2007. Pedestrians can access the area via two bow-and-arrow-inspired cable-stay bridges which span the Little and Big Arkansas rivers. Fire drums on boulders at the foot of the Keeper dramatically light the night. Plantings of sage, bottlebrush, medicinal herbs, prairie grasses, yuccas and cactus add to the sense of place and time. So how did it all get started? Well, as Dorothy says, “there’s no place like home”. What words could be more appropriate when describing the dream of a small community that literally built a museum out of a rainbow's notion? It took the brains of a small group of leaders, the heart for what L. Frank Baum began in 1900 as a simple children's book, and the courage to take on the task of constructing a home for over 2,000 artifacts dating from 1900 to present day. See more..

    Tanganyika Wildlife Park image
To start, from the moment we walked up to the ticket window and had our first encounter at the park to the workers throughout the park, the staff was very friendly and willing to answer questions. They clearly love what they do and it shows. What really made this park different from any zoo I have ever been to is how close you are able to get with many of the animals. We fed a miniature hippo, rhinoceros, lemurs, lorikeets and a camel. We could have fed llamas, goats, turtles, penguins and others. We also were able to enter the kangaroos’ yard and interact and pet them. What a treat! The grounds were well cared for. It had a splash park which was a welcomed treat for the kids on the hot day. I highly recommend anyone in the Wichita area go and enjoy this delightful place. See more..

  22. 4.5 Kansas Speedway (293 reviews)
    - Great First NASCAR Race Experience!
    Saturday: Auto Racing Tracks
    Kansas Speedway image
Had a blast at the Hollywood Casino 400 NASCAR race in September 2022. This was my first NASCAR race in person after years of watching local short-track racing. There isn't a bad seat in the house here. For really only hosting two races a year, the facilities were spotless, and the concessions were spread out and plentiful. I would come back to watch a race here in a heartbeat, however I am kicking myself for not taking advantage of the track's lenient carry-in policy. It's $5 for a bottle of water or soda, $10+ for a burger or chicken tenders, $9+ for a beer, etc. Do yourself a favor and carry in a small cooler with refreshments and a couple sandwiches! See more..

    Parks
    Gage Park image
My wife and I took a half hour or so to walk around Gage Park. We attempted to find the 'fitness loop,' but found no signage identifying the loop. We walked a concrete that went by a cemetery, the front of the zoo, and the rose garden - not sure if that was the 'fitness loop' or not - signage would be helpful. Nonetheless, it was a sunny day that afforded us an opportunity to stretch our legs before continuing our drive on I70. See more..

Please note that you're on private land, so be respectful of the site. The gravel road is not bad, and it's not very crowded. Located a short distance off of I-70 or accessed from the South. Already, dozens of volunteers bring hundreds of years of aviation knowledge and expertise to the museum, painstakingly restoring aircraft or performing countless other tasks to keep the museum operating and improve the experience for visitors. But there’s always a need for more. The Journey Continues In addition, many individuals, organizations and governments have made generous donations to bring the museum to where it is today. Much more is needed, however, to complete the mission. Click here to become a member or to find out how you might contribute to the cause. Meanwhile, please come visit. You’ll be amazed and entertained, and you’ll leave with a much better understanding both of aviation and of Wichita’s vital role in aviation history. See more..

    Great Wolf Lodge image
We stayed at the beginning of the month and it was a slower time but it made it perfect for the water park. The food was disappointing, pricy for the taste and options. So happy that there are plenty of options close by that we could run down the street for food and head back to the resort. The room was nice only downside was it smelled like wet dog. We got used the smell that it didn’t effect the stay. The carpet floors near the elevators on the 3rd and 4th floor and going towards the magic quest are starting to tear and my senior mom thankfully caught herself before tripping and falling. The staff said they know but made not effort to tape it down or fix it. My 8 year old had so much fun and now wants to do her birthday party there. Wish one was closer to home, so her friends could join. See more..

    Coronado Heights image
So glad we stopped by during a recent visit through Kansas. Had Coronado Heights as a site to visit and it did not disappoint. So impressive as it rises up over the lower topography. Road winds up around the hill, and on top is the "castle" as well as some picnic facilities. This area marks were Coronado was said to have traveled and explored, and while the castle itself is a 1930s WPA creation, it lends to the surrounding unspoiled beauty to give a definite sense of the past. Signage in the building notes dates. The views (as many have noted) are lovely and there are some hiking trails. Traveled with our 2 dogs so it was a nice opportunity to walk them as well. Very accessible. A definite stop if you're in the area. See more..

I was so excited to go here after seeing it listed on trip advisor. I am not a big wine connoisseur so I am easy to please. The gal that helped us was fun and bubbly and very knowledgeable. They had so many wines to choose from which made it hard so we ended up buying quite a bit. I just loved how the wines were wizard of oz themed and the labels are so cool. Not sure i will be able to part with the bottles after they are empty. If I am ever in the area I will definitely go back! See more..

I've only been to the Cider Mill a couple of other times. I think in general when we were coming down to the Powell Observatory. I have missed out on each occasion I was here of seeing them "made the cider." So this is a place to purchase items, although I did notice they have some games in their outdoor area (Corn Hole, and Ring toss), which is a nice addition. Do get the donuts they are good. You can get Apple Cider in local grocery stores but there are other items (country store) that makes this a place to stop (shop) See more..

I was really surprised to see how much work this man put into the house and the sculptures throughout the property. He had even put spikes on top of the walls and we were told that locals would come over and sit on the wall and mock him as he was building so he installed the spikes. The guided tour does bring you into the area that holds his glass top coffin, which the glass had cracked so he does not look natural anymore. He also had a zoo and these animals are now stuffed and placed throughout the house. It is worth the entrance price. See more..

it is only 5 dollars, per adult, and was worth it. my husband wasn't really thrilled about going but he liked it. it has a cabin, post office, schoolhouse and 2 wagons. it was interesting to see how people lived. the house is an office, where you pay and has a gift shop. some of the items for sale, you will recognize, if you are a fan of the show and books. they had a tin cup with a peppermint stick in it.they have a corral with a horse, pony and donkeys and or burros. we enjoyed it. they have big billboards directing you to it. there is even one telling you to turn around, if you missed it.
