    - Be here at sunset for lighting of caldrons
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Keeper of the Plains image
The Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers with hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit. Renowned Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin donated the Keeper of the Plains to the citizens of Wichita on May 18, 1974.Since the sculpture's installation to commemorate the United States Bicentennial, it has become a symbol for the city of Wichita and a tribute to the local American Indian tribes. in 1974. A complete renovation of the sculpture and installation of the Keeper of the Plains Plaza now brings people out each evening to see the Keeper and the "Ring of Fire." The 44-foot Cor-Ten steel Keeper of the Plains statue is now 30 feet higher than before with its new pedestal, surrounded by a plaza which describes the Plains Indian way of life. The Keeper also serves as the focal point of an eight-year, $20 million restoration and river beautification project completed in May 2007. Pedestrians can access the area via two bow-and-arrow-inspired cable-stay bridges which span the Little and Big Arkansas rivers. Fire drums on boulders at the foot of the Keeper dramatically light the night. Plantings of sage, bottlebrush, medicinal herbs, prairie grasses, yuccas and cactus add to the sense of place and time. The area is free and open to the public year-round. See more..

Massachusetts Street is basically the Downtown in Lawrence. It is a lively and beautiful street teeming with a variety of retail businesses. In fact, there are two brewery restaurants well worth the visit. Just one block west is the wonderful library, a modern architectural design not to be missed. Then there is the South Park, a beautiful community park with a lovely garden. The Kansas River Levee trail is not too far from Massachusetts; it is a nice place to walk and enjoy the expansive views of the river if it is not a hot day. All in all, Massachusetts Street is an enjoyable downtown area for leisurely walk, shopping and food. See more..

You can definitely see it from the highway, but until you stand underneath it you have no concept of how big this painting and easel really are. It's only going to add a few minutes to your trip to pull off and it's definitely worth taking the picture. I look like a gnat in the bottom of this photo. See more..
  6. 4.5 Garden of Eden (142 reviews)
    - Great place to visit
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Garden of Eden image
I was really surprised to see how much work this man put into the house and the sculptures throughout the property. He had even put spikes on top of the walls and we were told that locals would come over and sit on the wall and mock him as he was building so he installed the spikes. The guided tour does bring you into the area that holds his glass top coffin, which the glass had cracked so he does not look natural anymore. He also had a zoo and these animals are now stuffed and placed throughout the house. It is worth the entrance price. See more..

The World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine image
Would recommend visiting the museum when Eyegore’s Odditorium and Monster Museum is open. You can buy your “ball of twine” T-shirts as well as get a piece of twine to add to the ball. Your chance to become a part of history! This is a great stop literally in the middle of nowhere. If you are driving to or from Lucas Kansas make sure to closely look at the google maps. The road is pavement for a little bit but is about 25 miles of chalk/dirt road. I don’t think we have gotten that off our vehicle since! See more..

  15. 4.5 Bowl Plaza (34 reviews)
    - Too many cool things
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Bowl Plaza image
Right out of the car it's an interesting spot. A "fork" art display is on the bathroom's campus. Also a large roll of toilet paper is fairly funny to see and comes off as being whimsical. The outside of the bathroom's building is an interesting mosaic art piece. But inside is where it's really cool. The boy's bathroom came across like a 10 year olds dream bathroom. Hot Wheels, action figures, army men, etc. all trapped in time on the walls. The list goes on and on and on of what you'll can see in this room. It's a bit tricky to stay in there looking at the art that it really is while working around the appropriate amount of time being in the bathroom lol. I mean it is a bathroom after all. At some point it's just odd being in there looking around. It really is a room in which the art and style bring out the nostalgia in you. It's somewhere you should stop into see. You'll never find another one like it. See more..

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Mount Sunflower image
As a native Kansan I had never been to Mount Sunflower but have wanted to see it for the past few years. What a treat! You have to drive 12 or so miles on a (very well maintained) dirt road...but it was way worth it! Bring something to leave in the mailbox and leave a note in the notebook. Mount Sunflower is a must see if you are a Kansas native. See more..
  19. 4.0 Douglas Avenue (25 reviews)
    - Take a Stroll down Douglas Ave.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Douglas Avenue image
Douglas Avenue is one the the main streets in downtown Wichita, Kansas. Crossing the "Wheat" bridge over the Arkansas River you soon start seeing the street sculptures on both sides of Douglas Ave. They are whimsical, sweet and very friendly for children as well as adults, and well worth experiencing. Children love finding all the animals. The sculptures are on a nice short walk along Douglas. Was disappointed that several with water action were not working and appeared they had not worked in some time. Also, there are several lovely and unique small art museums and artist quarters worth seeing along Douglas. Unfortunately, this interesting area has many vagrants which may make you uncomfortable. So, definitely a daytime outing. See more..

Points of Interest & Landmarks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Bartlett Arboretum image
Lots of small sized play homes for the kiddos coupled with incredible landscaping. This is a place that never gets the attention and kiddos that it truly deserves. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable. To the very best of my knowledge there isn't anything like this place in a 300+ mile radius. The closest would be St.Louis. The entrance fee is strictly a voluntary contribution. There is no set amount. $5 is suggested. See more..

  25. 4.5 Truckhenge (15 reviews)
    - A quirky great fun detour on our road trip with very welcoming owners
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Truckhenge image
My husband and I loved this place, we loved Ron and his wife Linda the owners. It’s great to have creative eccentrics out there still pushing boundaries and doing their own thing, and doing it with such great humour…we felt really welcome and were here almost 2 hours on a bitterly cold day! Ron is full of stories, he’s a genuine quirky outsider artist, full of jokes and funny asides. He walked us around his property showing us his chainsaw carvings, trucks upended in the ground, a row of graffiti painted upended boats, his shoe tree…and inside his incredible Quonset adapted home. Showed us his painted floors, his indoor garden, hand made cage elevator and art painted with household paint on to large hung bedsheets. This is proper American eccentricity, it’s a mad jumble from inside someone’s head laid out in a playful mess of fun and creativity and if you’re open to that kind of thing then this will be a treat for you. Long live Ron and Linda…we need more like them. See more..

We planned a last minute overnight trip and wolf hotel fit us in! The old building and the history Tour were intriguing. Come to find out there is a rumored ghost which made our stay on a dark stormy night extra interesting(nothing happened btw) The parlor and kitchen are common areas where we hung out playing games and watching a movie. The rooms where each unique and comfy. A late night visit to the speakeasy in the basement was fun! It’s family friendly. We had a sasparilla and played darts. 29. 4.5 Point Of Rocks (12 reviews)
    - Well worth the drive and the time.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Point Of Rocks image
The Point of Rocks was a Santa Fe landmark and still today you can see the wagon ruts left here. The road to the Point isn't rough but it's not something you could do after a heavy rain unless you have the right vehicle. The view is outstanding of the valley below and you can see for miles in any direction. There is a set of steps you can take to get to the valley below and actually walk in the same path as those hardy traders did. As usual in the Grasslands the signage is excellent and the interpretative text and pictures tell great story including the 1914 flood. See more..

  34. 4.5 Great Bend Courthouse (10 reviews)
    - More than just a court house and it is beautiful
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Great Bend Courthouse image
The Barton (named for Clara, RN) County Courthouse is a beautiful white marble 4-story building with large white columns in front reminding some of the Washington DC buildings. This big white building sits in the middle of a grassy city block size park. There is a large concrete outdoor band shell with a City Band that plays there weekly during Summer and during Winter they lay out a "fake ice" skating rink in the seating area and they even "loan" you ice skates. There is a large bronze statue there of Great Bend native Jack Kilby the man who invented the "microchip" and won Nobel prize for it. There are also a few other statues and memorials in this area. The Santa Fe Trail ran through here and the "American Legion" highway US~281 being the only US Highway that runs from Mexico to Canada. See more..
  35. 4.0 Home on the Range Cabin (9 reviews)
    - Historical Place with Lots of Vegetation
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Home on the Range Cabin image
Home on the Range Cabin is the original site where the song "Home on the Range" was written. Dr. Brewster M Higley wrote a poem titled “My Western Home” to describe the beauty of the site he had chosen for his Kansas Homestead in 1871. He penned this now-famous work on the bank of the West Beaver Creek in Smith County, Kansas, where along with the help of a few friends, he also constructed a cabin on July 4, 1872. Dr. Higley presented the poem to his friend Dan Kelly who set it to music and then gave it to John Harlan, the leader of a family band that included Kelly. The song “Home on the Range” was born. The Home on the Range Cabin is listed on the National Historical Register. The entire site is privately owned and managed by the Peoples Heartland Foundation, a 501c3 charity. Thanks to the donations of individuals, companies and other charities, the Cabin was completely restored to its original form in 2013. The Cabin is open for visitors daily from daylight to dark. 36. 5.0 Thompson Barn (9 reviews)
    - Novel Venue
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Thompson Barn image
Thompson Barn is a wonderful example of an old structure being repurposed for a new uses. The barn looking structure turned out to be a nice place for the business meeting that I attended with food service downstairs and the meeting in the big hall upstairs (looked like it can accommodate more than 200 people, to give an idea an idea). The high-ceiling hall is well equipped with wide stair entrance from the foyer on first floor and an elevator next to the stairs. The acoustics was perfect; no echo or distracting noise. The grounds has ample parking, but I found the entrance from Lackman Road to be too tight requiring a sharp turn in. Located adjacent to the barn building are other old structures from the historical Lackman Farm; one can briefly walk by them to get close up view. Thompson Barn would be an excellent venue for gatherings such as weddings, receptions, or business meetings, etc. See more..

Miner's Memorial in Immigrant Park image
I really enjoyed seeing the memorial since I was raised in Pittsburg. However I am SO disappointed that on one is currently active in maintaing the memorial or adding names. My Grand father, Wesley William Bennington was a coal miner and his nae appears in the South Radley mines. However I worked for months trying to get his name added or talk to someone that was familar with the memorial. I sent money to the address on the website but it was returned as not being a good address. I made several phone calls to the City of Pittsburg, but was not able to locate any one who knew anything about the memorial. So disappointing!!! See more..

This is one of those "you gotta see it to believe it" things. My pictures just do not do it justice. No matter what your political affiliation there's something for everyone. 42. 3.5 Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway (6 reviews)
    - Scenic "byway" v. scenic "drive"
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Drives
    Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway image
The scenic "byway" is a stretch of highway 160, and it's got a lot of really pretty views; the scenic "drive" is a half-circle south of 160, part of which isn't paved but had been graded when we drove it two days ago. You turn onto the "drive" a few miles west of Medicine Lodge, go south then west and then back north and end up 10 or so miles west of where you started. Of course, you could also start at the other end. :-) My wife and I both thought the views from the "byway" were even better than those from the "drive." The main difference is that you're just passing through, but on the "drive" you can get a little closer to the hills. There's not much of a shoulder on the road, though, and most of the side roads are private, so you're still seeing it from a distance. The drive up to Lake City, west to Sun City, and south back to 160 is also pretty. See more..

    Eight Mile Corner image
Even though there are 35 tri-state points on dry land in the United States, this one is reasonably easy to access if you are driving Highway 56 through Elkhart, Kansas. It is a short senic drive on a gravel road along the south edge of the Cimarron National Grassland (from Elkhart head west on County Road A aka State Line Road for 8 miles). A marker on the gravel road indicates the survey point, there is a place to pull off the road where a windmill also marks Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
