Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum image
This is a museum near the KU Union (and parking). A friend and I visited this place, after I heard about Comanche, General Custer's Horse (& only survivor of Little Big Horn for the US Calvery side), from another friend who lives there. The building is named after naturalist and taxidermist named Dyche. There is his taxidermy display that was for 1893 Chicago fair. The first level is all the taxidermy items, but there are live lizards and snakes in the upper floors along with other fossils and find. They even have a bee hive, with windows to see the activities and a clear plastic tube where the bees fly in and out. The top floor has more interactive items to engage children (and adults who are young at heart.) The basement does include a "bug room" again children interactive area. I enjoyed this little museum. They have a suggested donation (fee) of $7 for adults and $4 for children. See more..

Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum image
What an great museum. It is so far above what I'd expect from this size of a town. The staff was extremely helpful. We were given a map; which was needed to make sure we saw everything. It covers the history of Baxter Springs from the mid-1800s (founding) up to the present. There are a wide range of exhibits and various rooms throughout with both a lot of memorabilia and artifacts, yet also signs explaining what things are. There are 2 full floors; and a few small things outside. We saw everything; it took 2.5 hours. Great tour through the last 160 years of middle America. See more..

We love historic home and museums. The Carroll Mansion is probably one of my favorite museums in Leavenworth. There is SO much to see and it is just the best time to be walking through this old home. Until you get to the 2nd floor bedroom, that's when it gets a bit creepy, but only if you pay super close attention to the pictures on the wall. To say that we had incorrectly pre-judged this museum would be a huge understatement! We were attracted by the oddity of the Miss Kansas exhibition and with Pratt being on our road-trip route through Kansas, we stopped off to give the Museum a cursory glance. What we found instead was a lovingly maintained and genuinely interesting museum telling the story of a city’s past. In the end we spent the best part of 2 hours browsing the museum’s various attractions and curiosities and chatting to the energetic and engaging old couple who had given up their Sunday afternoon to staff the museum. We left with a warm feeling, suitably impressed with the community spirit and attention that had gone into both creating and maintaining this place. Great find, and definitely worth a visit. They have a furnished house, church, school, post office, and blacksmith shop. There are also cars and wagons which are displayed. The people of Great Bend must take great pride in their heritage and giving priceless parts of history to the museum. There are also great displays inside the museum itself. - A great historical museum!
    History Museums
This museum tells every aspect of late 19th & early 20th century rural life in Marshall County, KS. The museum is housed in the old Marshall County courthouse & the original courtroom is well preserved. You will be hard pressed to find another like it in the U.S. This is one of the best county museums I have ever seen. And it is free to see! See more..

Kiowa County Historical Museum and Soda Fountain image
After riding the free bikes around town on our day-trip to Greensburg we stopped in at the Soda Fountain and got delicious ice cream and drinks. Perfect to cool off and enjoy some relaxing time after our rides and walks around town. I was particularly excited that they stock a dairy free option of Sorbet so I got to enjoy an ice-cream treat as well! We did a quick walk around the museum which was quaint, but not quite as engaging as the Big Well museum. See more..

We just spent an entire week traveling our state of Kansas. We drove thru at least 113 cities and stopped at numerous venues. Out of all of our stops, the Ulysses Adobe Museum Complex was our very favorite. The museum is very nicely done. Full of area information. Clean and neat. The nearby outbuilding are very much worth visiting as well. Be sure to add this jewel to your stops when you are in southwest Kansas. See more..

    Miners Hall Museum image
Just a few minutes drive from Pittsburgh Kansas. This little museum is well worth a visit to learn about the rich history of coal mining in the area. Everything from mining implements to documents, records and photos. The mines were interwoven with the lives of local families who were predominantly immigrants from Italy and Eastern Europe. The low pay, poor conditions and exploitation by unscrupulous mine owners resulted in frequent strikes. At one point over 6000 wives of the mineworkers marched to protest strike breakers who were called ‘scabs’. Reminded me of the painful coal miners’ strikes in the UK in the 1970’s protesting pit closures. We were shown around the museum by the nice lady in charge who explained the exhibits. A very enjoyable visit. We went back a couple of days later to dig deeper into some of the exhibits. See more..
