Worth the effort to see these rock formations out in the middle of nowhere. You could spend about 30-45 minutes walking around them and reading their history (see my photos). Please note that you're on private land, so be respectful of the site. The gravel road is not bad, and it's not very crowded. Located a short distance off of I-70 or accessed from the South. Go slowly through the small towns as we got pulled over in Dighton, Kansas. See more..

  3. 4.5 Castle Rock (73 reviews)
    - great place, worth the stop, but only 4WD high clearance vehicles should go beyond the castle to the badlands

It was ridiculously cold when the wind blew, but only about 3 degrees without wind (so tolerable). lol You are out on the plains with virtually nothing to break the wind except the rocks/bluffs themselves (if you are on the correct side of them) so the wind is blowing pretty consistently. This place is totally worth the trip though, even with what happened at the end. All of the other reviews that say you need a 4wd are NOT joking. I would say you need an off-road capable vehicle as well if you want to drive through the badlands. I will post pics of the "road" we had to take to get out- I would call it more of a gulley. No joke. DRIVER'S BEWARE If you don't have a 4wd or it has rained and your vehicle can't off-road well you should just come in from the south/west, drive up to the castle, enjoy yourself there looking for fossils and soaking in the history of the place, then turn around and leave the way you came. Situated at the southwestern corner of Kansas, the Cimarron National Grasslands is nearly 110,000 acres of flat, impressive terrain with low vegetative growth. Its ancient Point of Rocks offers spectacular views, and the underground Cimarron River affords lush greenery above a dry riverbed. See more..
