  1. 5.0 Ellinwood Underground Tunnels (34 reviews)
    - Dick Building

Not sure why, but every article I see about the Ellinwood tunnels shows a photo of my family’s building, The Dick Bldg, but doesn’t identify it or state that the tunnels are under it also. The articles mention the Wolf Hotel which is really neat but the tunnels under the Dick Bldg are equally amazing and are also currently being toured. Marilyn Dick Tuttle See more..
  2. 4.5 Battle Canyon (12 reviews)
    - Last Indian battle in Kansas

This is 1 mile south of Historic Lake Scott State Park. It's well signed. Battle Canyon is actually on private land, but it's available for us to look at for free. There's an information board at the bottom of the hill. The road is gravel the whole way. At the top there's the monument & at each corner it tells what went on in the battle. To the right of the monument at the bottom of a gully is the cave the women & children hid in. I enjoyed seeing this. It only took about 20 minutes. I did not go into the cave. See more..
  3. 4.5 Cherry Creek Encampment Monument (10 reviews)
    - Better than most historical roadside stops for the fan of American history

I don't always stop for roadside historical markers. But while coming south on Route 27 towards Saint Francis I spotted the tipi from a distance and decided to check it out. There is room for a few cars (and easier to turn around in, if you're there first). The history plaque legend is fairly extensive, for such a spot, but pretty interesting. Even the greatest country in the world has its bad times; looks like this was one. But check it out. The guest book is in a mailbox there. Kids might enjoy looking at the metal rabbit and other critters in the high grass. And the metal Indian silhouette on the bluff above. It will take you only ten minutes or so to stretch your legs here, and in my opoinion it will be a worthwhile ten minutes. See more..

What a fun way to get in your daily steps and learn about the history of this fascinating town. Do take the time to read placards set along the trail. You’ll get a closer look at how Lindsborg came into being, and a sense of pride in their Swedish heritage. See more..
  5. 4.0 Miner's Memorial in Immigrant Park (9 reviews)

Miner's Memorial in Immigrant Park image
I really enjoyed seeing the memorial since I was raised in Pittsburg. However I am SO disappointed that on one is currently active in maintaing the memorial or adding names. My Grand father, Wesley William Bennington was a coal miner and his nae appears in the South Radley mines. However I worked for months trying to get his name added or talk to someone that was familar with the memorial. I sent money to the address on the website but it was returned as not being a good address. I made several phone calls to the City of Pittsburg, but was not able to locate any one who knew anything about the memorial. So disappointing!!! See more..
