So how did it all get started? Well, as Dorothy says, “there’s no place like home”. What words could be more appropriate when describing the dream of a small community that literally built a museum out of a rainbow's notion? It took the brains of a small group of leaders, the heart for what L. Frank Baum began in 1900 as a simple children's book, and the courage to take on the task of constructing a home for over 2,000 artifacts dating from 1900 to present day.

    Very enjoyable
I have been to Dorothys house in Liberal KS and I have been to the Oz museum. These are 2 very different venues. I enjoyed both just as much. I highly recommend both if you are a fan of the movies or books. The detail of each of the characters is so darn good that you feel as if you are looking into the eyes of the real characters. The artifacts are stellar too. The gift shop is pretty darn awesome too.

    A Good Time
We’re spending the night in Colby, Kansas on our way back to the east coast, planning to spend the next night in the Kansas City area so we can partake of some fine KC BBQ. Something about Kansas and tornadoes rings a bell, and after a little research my wife declares victory. About 10 miles north of Interstate 70, in Wamego, KS, is a Wizard of Oz museum. L. Frank Baum never discloses where Dorothy lived in Kansas, so why not Wamego? Put the address in our GPS the next day and off we went. It’s a nice little town, typical of what one would expect in rural Kansas, with the exception of this museum in downtown. You immediately see how sincerely nice the front desk people are (Dorothy clones?). In the lobby one of them says a few words and then opens the doors into the museum for those that have gathered. Inside is very well done, informational about Baum and all the Oz books that he wrote and the many different languages that they’ve been translated to. Then they have sections which highlight the different characters and scenes from the book. At the end you can step into the Wizard’s hot air balloon and wish yourself home. All in all, we had a good time, as it appeared did everyone, and we were happy about finding such a fun way to break up the day’s travels.
