The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level. Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway. Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike. It’s often ovrloooked. This area is mostly used for ferry travel, parking and restaurants so its passed by. But if you take a few minutes and walk around you will enjoy the tranquility of the boardwalk. Probably most famous for being the location of the annual Bremerton Blackberry Festival (in 2018 ((the 29th)) it will be over the Labor Day weekend) the boardwalk is a hidden gem. I suggest stopping at Starbucks first then take a relaxing visit of the boardwalk followed by going to the water park nearby. See more..

This was our first smoke free day from the fires in Washington and Oregon. So, we decided to go for a walk around the Memorial and local Marina. It was so beautiful seeing the statues, the boats and enjoying the fresh air. Stop at Anthony's for a bite to eat or stop at the local food trucks on the other side, you won't be disappointed. The birds were fun to watch and if you're lucky you might even see a seal or two that hang out by the fishing boats. Have fun! See more..

Snow was everywhere, but not here! Great place to go for a brisk morning walk. Tried to catch the mountains in the sunshine, but the clouds moved in too soon! There were several folks trying to do some fishing. It's a very peaceful place. Loved the clouds moving in and the artwork on the pier. See more..
