    Bluff Fort Historic Site image
We were staying in Bluff Utah and we decided to visit this museum one afternoon. A brand new building is used to tell an incredible story of Mormon pioneers in the late 1800s. The museum personnel are very friendly and very knowledgeable. The story of the hole in the wall wagon train adventure is incredible. The Museum and the outbuildings are first class, are well maintained and do an excellent job demonstrating the story that is being told. We ended up spending almost 2 hours there. Admission is free. The gift shop merchandise is high-quality and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the town. See more..

Golden Spike National Historical Park image
Great place to spend a couple of hours and learn about the history of the railroad and its importance. It is amazing how much man power went into creating a rail system that crossed the country. When visiting here, you will have the opportunity to watch an informative 20 minute video about the railroad and what it took to finally join the east and west and the significance of the golden spike. They also do a reenactment of the event with two (very accurate) replica trains. Admission is required and is $20 a car and gives you access to the parks for 7 days. See more..

I just took the tour solo on Friday. I wish I remember the gentleman’s name who gave me the tour. I’m not Mormon so I didn’t understand a couple things but my guide took So much time explaining everything. It was such an interesting tour and an amazing property. It was free and they wouldn’t even accept a donation. I would definitely recommend this. See more..

The National Park Service has renovated and refurnished the Gifford farmhouse as a cultural demonstration site to interpret the early Mormon settlement of the Fruita valley. In addition to the farmhouse, the Gifford homestead includes a barn, smokehouse, garden, pasture, and rock walls. See more..

  8. 4.5 Fruita (205 reviews)
    - Go for a picnic, fruit picking, and pies
    Historic Sites
    Fruita image
The Fruita historic district of the park is located down the scenic drive. There is some hiking that starts in this area as well and the campground is located here. When we visited, we went to Giffords at opening at 8 AM to get pies before they ran out. We also picked apricots which were in season - it was really fun to just wander around and pluck them off trees to eat (it was free if you consumed the fruit in the orchard; a small fee if you bagged them to take with you). There's also a lovely shady picnic area by the river with plenty of tables that even at lunch time on a Saturday we had no issue finding one. The bathrooms in this area are flush toilets and clean by the way! Very picturesque setting and the deer even come by to lunch with you. Please give them their space and don't bother them. We saw parents letting kids get WAY too close to the door, aggravating them and making them run off. See more..
  9. 4.5 Jacob Hamlin Home (168 reviews)
    - A MUST SEE site when visiting St. George
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Jacob Hamlin Home image
This is such an interesting frontier home of Jacob Hamblin, missionary and peacemaker to the Indians, his 2 wives, and their 11+ children. The big stone house was a mission home and family home. Don't miss the large great room upstairs, where the wives and children would have spent a majority of their time sewing, spinning, weaving, cooking, teaching. I love learning about Jacob's 4 wives. He only ever had 2 at a time though. See more..
  10. 4.5 Old Paria (108 reviews)
    - Beautiful views in late afternoon before sunset.
    Historic Sites
    Old Paria image
Beautiful drive in late afternoon. The setting sun on the cliff faces is beautiful. I would be hesitant to drive down if the road is wet or if rain is in the forecast. It gets pretty steep and you'd hate to be stuck at the bottom! See more..
  11. 4.5 Mule Canyon Ruins (83 reviews)
    - Ruins visible from the road!
    Historic Sites
    Mule Canyon Ruins image
This interpretive site is visible from SR 95 and signed on the north side of the highway near Mile Marker 101. A short paved walkway led from the parking area to the ruins. The hike around the ruin is short and quick, making this a perfect “quick stop” place to stretch your legs while driving through. Learned that sometime around A.D. 750, a pithouse was built on this site as part of a presumed Pueblo I occupation. However, the site was abandoned for many years until it was re-established in about 1000 and was actively occupied until about 1150. The room block of 12 rooms likely was home to 2 or 3 families. Some of the rooms had doorways but the main entrances were roof entrances. The single-story rooms at the Mule Canyon Ruin likely shared a roof area that was an extended patio for the village. 18. 4.0 Butch Cassidy Childhood Home (32 reviews)
    - Fun and interesting stop
    Historic Sites
    Butch Cassidy Childhood Home image
My husband and I stopped here while doing a tour of Utah parks. It’s right off of one of the main highways to Salt Lake City. It was actually quite interesting to see that a fairly large family lived in such a small place so long ago. We had been visiting nearby Bryce Canyon national Park and it was interesting to think about those outlaws roaming these areas! I recommend a quick stop if you’re traveling in the area. See more..

  21. 4.5 John Ford’s Point (18 reviews)
    - Stunning, Iconic Views
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lookouts
    John Ford’s Point image
John Ford's Point if one of the most iconic and scenic spots in the Navajo Tribal Park in Monument Valley. It is one of the first places one reaches after heading out on the drive from the visitor centre, either by one's own car (during the permitted hours), or by tour. It was used during filming of westerns and it has sweeping views. There are also touristy things related to westerns there which one can pay for- photo ops, etc., including horses to hire for photos. 23. 3.5 Wolfe Ranch (14 reviews)
    - Ranch
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
    Wolfe Ranch image
This small cabin and mud house give you a feel for how the family lived. You are not able to enter the buildings, but can see in them. We learned some interesting info about the family from the Gypsy app, otherwise this stop may have been a head scratcher. It shares parking with the Delicate Arch hike to the arch, so the lot is busy. It is also the stop to see the petroglyphs. See more..
  24. 4.5 Torrey Petroglyphs (10 reviews)
    - A bit of ancient history
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
    Torrey Petroglyphs image
This is actually located east of Torrey and very close to the Fruita Schoolhouse on Utah 24. These petrogyphs are an easy tie in with the school and the Hickman Natural Bridge. I stopped here because this exhibit was considerably less crowded then the ones in the park. It took just a few minutes to view and was very worth while. This was a very interesting eye into the ancient history of the area. It is free! See more..

    Sun Tunnels image
Cool experience, at least for me. My girlfriend was less impressed. I was a little concerned about finding it but the directions I found online were adequate. The gravel road was fine and I sure felt more comfortable knowing we had food and water with us just in case. I got some good pics but you can probably get better ones if you visit at dawn or dusk. See more..

This was our second last park on our 9 day Southwest odyssey. Just when you think that you've seen it all, along comes the next beautiful view. Don't think that all these beautiful locations are mirror images of each other. We found that each and every one had its own identity. See more..

  31. 4.5 Swett Ranch (2 reviews)
    - A MUST STOP when in Dutch John UT
    Historic Sites • Farms
You MUST stop here when in the Dutch John area. Fascinating ranch run by the Swett family from 1909 until 1967. They were one of the last to acquire land under the Homestead Act. There is a self-guided walking tour of 14 sites on the property. The Swett family (9 children born on the ranch) were totally self-sufficient. Built 3 homes on the property over the years and all are still standing. The tour is so very interesting and informative. We were fortunate to have a couple there as docents for the summer when we visited. They were also a wealth of information. Great experience and education for all age groups. Ever in the Flaming Gorge area? GO! You won't be sorry! See more..
