What a great way to spend the day! The mine tour starts at a little museum just outside town with displays and explanations of a lot of the equipment the miners used. Then it winds through the mountains, with stops at several abandoned mines and a couple ghost towns. Beautiful views, amazing scenery, and tastefully documented history. The routes are well-marked, but you absolutely need the guide prepared by the local historical society. It has a map and all the info you need, and is available at several locations in town. There is a route for all vehicles, a route for ATVs only, and a route for high-clearance/4-wheel-drive vehicles. (We took a RAV4 on the high clearance route and had no trouble; there are some rocks and streams to ford.). Pack food and drink, there are no facilities. See more..
