    MV Tarahne image
I've attended a variety of events held in the MV Tarahne. It's a lovely, quirky and quaint venue. It is kept up by a hardworking crew of volunteers: The Atlin Historical Society, and what a gift it is to the community and tourists. Inside you have stunning views of Atlin Lake and its shouldering glacial peaks. One can only imagine what it must have been like for the early travellers on the MV Tarahne. If you time your visit in June, you can attend the Tarahne Tea, an event which raises money for the continuing maintenance of the ship. Feel free to dress up: in costume from 1919 or tea with the Queen, in hats and gloves. The tea is hot and excellent and all the sandwiches, cookies, scones, cakes and other treats are homemade by the community, all served on pretty china... AND there is plenty of it. You can buy tickets in advance at the Atlin General Store. See more..

Our geocaching adventure in Spences Bridge took us to a family cemetery near the centre of the community. This small cemetery contains only eight graves. The largest marker belongs to Jessie's husband, John Smith. This rustic, square-shaped graveyard is surrounded by a fence made of stacked logs. Looking across a field of green weeds, we could see the sign for the Bates Motel. Widow Smith's orchard was famous for thirty-seven different varieties of apples. She entered many of them in international exhibitions, winning top honors for her Golden Grimes. Although little remains of the 3000 tree orchard, her fruit original packing house is now a coffee shop and store. See more..

    Fort McLeod Historic Park image
Fort McLeod was the first fur trading post established west of the Rockies. This site is a quick stop off Highway 97 at Fort McLeod. Take the turn for the Tse'khene store and village on Carp Lake road, go over the bridge and you'll soon see the McLeod's Lake post sign on your left. The original fort buildings have been replaced by buildings from around 1920 era. They have been well maintained. This is also the site of the old Tse'khene village. There were some black bears to greet me and some possessive ravens guarding the buildings. Seeing this spot really brought the fur trade history to life for me and I wish to acknowledge the territory of the Tse'khene people on which these buildings rest. I thank the Tse'khene people for making this site available for me to enjoy. I highly recommend you stop and take a look next time you're driving through McLeod Lake. See more..
