Huntington Beach State Park, South Carolina, United States

Lovely state park

Beautiful scenery, long unspoiled beach with clear water. You can't go wrong with a visit here - in the summer on the weekend plan to go either early or late because they close the parking lots once they fill up. Locals with a library card can borrow a state park pass from the library that gets you in for free (sometimes there's a wait list for the pass so go online first).

    Overcast Day Stop
We stopped on a breezy February day, we saw the Castle, Visitor Center and RV/Camping grounds. I recommend a stop, there is an entry/parking fee but they seemed to have some kind of deal if you were going to come for a couple days. The park was clean and tidy, some damage was present from what I can assume was Hurrican Ian in the fall of 2022. The staff at the visitor center weren't overly friendly but they had a few interactive things to read and do in the building. I would have loved to walk more of the trails but we ran out of time so be sure to plan accordingly!

Enjoyed Atalaya Castle and the park (2 for 1 read my review to find out)
We visited Huntington Beach. Inside the park is Atalaya Castle. Price was $8.00 pp for the park fee and another $2.00 pp if you decide to go into Atalaya Castle. We were told on this day in January there was only one tour guide once a day. However, we could pay an extra $3.00 pp for headsets. We got there and there were no headsets available because they were all in repair. They do hand you a map with numbered rooms and descriptions. It was easy to follow. Unfortunately, this building is in total disrepair. The story and history of this building was intriguing to us. The building itself had beautiful areas but also totally broken down areas. I enjoyed seeing this structure however I could see how others would not be as enthusiastic. ( I hope some day they can manage to have at least one room in the fashion of the lifestyle at that moment in time. ). This is a definite fixer upper on steroids…lol. I’ll say again, we enjoyed this little treasure. Now because of our “day trip” agenda we didn’t have as much time as we wanted to see the nature trails. What we saw looked very nice. The beach was beautiful and large. We are not campers and it’s obviously a nice campground too. My comment on the 2 for 1 is great to know…..upon paying our $8.00 pp park entry, the guard told us if we decide to visit Myrtle beach state park in the same day, show them this receipt and we get in free ! We were excited and added that as another stop on our day trip. Great to know and I’d say a definite hidden secret that people aren’t aware of ahead of time.
