    Aiken County Historical Museum image
I thought I'd run in and out to see the building but I ended up reading a lot of the info about the displays. There was a cute little olde time soda shop and pharmacy display. I liked that it told a local story instead of all the Civil War history I already knew. And it's free. I wanted to go in the gift shop but they weren't wearing masks. The volunteers at the front were. See more..
  7. 4.5 Museum and Library of Confederate History (140 reviews)
    - Outstanding collection

Museum and Library of Confederate History image
I spotted this while driving through a side neighborhood. Was at first hestiant given the small size of the building...but was completely, pleasantly surprised with what I found inside. This Civil War period collection is impressive, and the curator/director Mike Couch may be the museum's best treasure. He easily spent 90 minutes with me explaining each display, often sharing facts/stories that added depth, color and meaning to each. While I'm not a Civil War buff, I do enjoy History; I left with a far greater appreciation of that period thanks largely to Mike. Note: some earlier comments have cited concerns that the presentations are one-sided and lack balance. That was not my impression...and Mike did not promote a singular view. Know that this collection focuses with pride on the role and significant contribution of South Carolina during that period. I say "well done"!. See more..

  13. 5.0 Elloree Heritage Museum & Cultural Center (23 reviews)
    - Elloree Heritage Museum is a Most See Attraction
    History Museums
Elloree Heritage Museum & Cultural Center image
We have been to many museums in our life time, and rate the Elloree Heritage Museum at the top of our list. Elloree is a very small town and you can tell by the way this place was put together that the people of this area have a lot of pride in their little community. Beautiful exhibits well designed and with a hand control gives you the history behind each of the displays. This is a cotton farming area and much of the museum is a history of that kind of life style. I did not see once piece in this museum that was missing any part and it really give you the detail on how this equipment was made back in those days. Interestingly, the street that the Museum is on, hasn't changed since the early 1900's. This is really a must see. Stop in at the Visitors Center if your heading south as you cross Lake Marion. Drop in at the visitors center and ask for things to see in the small towns surrounding this Lake. Elloree is a short distance. We were treated very nicely at this visitors center. See more..

There are many free exhibits, demonstrations and speeches as well as classes in exercise, art, culinary, crafts, etc. for a very reasonable fee. Great visit. There were volunteers in period costume to personally escort you around the property and through the house. As expected, some were not all period specific. Some of the buildings on the property were not originally there but were moved there to represent. An interesting aspect is the reconstruction, the balancing of the protection and keeping it original. It has been closed for the better part of a year, due to covid. But it is back, two times a month, donations accepted. See more..

    Spent 2-3 hours History Museums
    Savannah River Site Museum image
When the Soviet Union exploded the first nuclear weapon, the SRS went into action creating tritium and plutonium for the hydrogen bomb. We won the cold war and they had an unprecedented safety record. I really had no idea this place existed until we arrived. The lady working inside was so nice and had no problems answering the questions we asked of her. She also really seemed to love her job. She also made herself available for questions but never followed us around allowing us to move at our own speed. I really enjoyed the museum but there was a lot of reading to do. I'm more of a visual exhibit type of person but the information was so interesting I didn't mind all the reading. Highly recommended. See more..
