The Historic Green Vault was definitely a highlight on our trip. Our kids were SO sick of walking through museums and various "old town" sights of various towns so we were a little hesitant about whether this would capture their attention, but boy did it. The treasures (literal) here feel very accessibly presented and the collection is not overwhelming. I think it took about 90 minutes. In fact, we were all a little sad that we didn't also have tickets to the New Green Vault. Also, the vault rooms are kept relatively cool so this was a great activity for a 35c degree day!See more..

4.5Panometer Dresden(565 reviews) - Alone Worth a Trip to Dresden Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
Since 2006 the Panometer Dresden, a former gas tank in Dresden Reick, displays the monumental 360° panoramas “BAROQUE DRESDEN” and “DRESDEN 1945” created by Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi in a regular change. The presentation of the pictures on a scale of 1:1 and a 105 m wide and 27 m high surface is supported by the use of light and sound. Standing on the 15 m high platform in the middle of the monumental picture the visitor can thus experience the perfect illusion of immerging into the history of Saxony’s capital Dresden. Between January and May/June the panorama “DRESDEN 1945” broaches the issues of tragedy and hope of the European city. The accompanying exhibition provides an introduction into the immediate aftermath of the bombing raids on February 13th in 1945. Inside of the panorama picture, which is supported by light and sound effects, the incidents of this day get then even more realistic for the visitors and they get the feeling of being directly involved in the happening. The following documentary, showing interviews with contemporary witnesses, depicts Dresden’s reconstruction in the centuries after the bombing. Between June and December “BAROQUE DRESDEN” invites its visitors to a travel in time into the epoch of Baroque, Dresden’s most famous era. Inspired by the numerous vedutas of Bernardo Bellotto, also known as Canaletto, Yadegar Asisi depicts a unique overall view of Saxony’s capital city. Detailed sceneries of the city life and the courtly routine during the Augustan Epoch, dated back to 1695 - 1760, allow the visitors to plunge into the baroque heyday. The accompanying exhibition, held in vibrant colours such as magenta, deep blue and gold, concentrates on the baroque city’s daily life. Numerous exhibits illustrate different aspects of absolutism, court and religion of this time.See more..

Our new permanent exhibition, Our History. Dictatorship and Democracy after 1945, highlights new themes and explores the post-reunification period in more detail. Here, visitors are taken on a journey through history – from the years after the Second World War to life in former East Germany and today’s Federal Republic of Germany. Why was East Germany founded? Who held the power in the country? How did people live, work, debate and celebrate? Why did the GDR fail? How has Germany grown together again after reunification? What are people’s issues and concerns today? To explore the history of a divided Germany and the years after reunification, the exhibition showcases over 2000 photos, films and objects, from the table in the SED’s politburo to parts of the fence at the Federal German embassy in Prague. In addition, contemporary witnesses not only share their own experience of these events, but show, though their personal stories, how political events affect people’s everyday lives.See more..
Do not come here tired! The museum is amazing and like a delicious dish it is worth savouring mindfully and leisurely. It is not only the collection itself that is awe inspiring, but also the way it is presented. 5.0August Horch Museum(275 reviews) - History of the Audi Brand! Saturday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
This is a mecca for all car fans and particularly those fans of German cars. The history of various marques is followed clearly and the individual people are featured to give the human side to the visit. Towards the end of the museum there is a reference to the town of Zwickau and it's more recent car manufacture. Well worth the visit in my humble opinion. There are all facilities you would want, a restaurant and a shop with fine books and models to remind you of your visit. Excellently laid out and no restrictions on photography!See more..

What shall I say! Please make a trip to come to The Foundation "German Watch Museum Glashütte" if you are in Dresden for few days. This museum is definitely one of a kind especially for german watch making and its development in horology including world wars affecting on industry. Very impressive with the info (displayed clearly in english and getman) and all arranged in a typical german modern manner. Free audio guide in english or german or czech. We were very lucky to have a guided tour with the museum director, Mr Reinhard Reichel who has immerse experience in german history and horology. It was lovely surprise and is worth to make the effort to visit, even I am not a fan of watches at all. You can also try to book other tours on their workshop and manufactory with local watch makers like Glashütte Original in advance. Highly recommended but give yourself few hours or a day. See more..
4.5Schlesisches Museum Gorlitz(60 reviews) - Görlitz is a gem in Sachsen, and this museum tells its story :) Speciality Museums
I only had 24 hours in Görlitz, and the Schlesisches Museum is a good first stop. You can view multiple painted wooden ceilings dating from the Renaissance in this multi-building complex. There are some amazing carvings to be seen, including a set of coal miner figures carved out of - what else - hunks of coal, as well as various depictions of the legendary figure of Rübenzahl, the spirit of the mountains. Check out the Medieval shop next door and ask the bearded gentleman there to blow one of the big horns for you...straight up out of Lord of the Rings!See more..

4.5Priesterhäuser Zwickau(30 reviews) - It's remarkable and unimaginable Speciality Museums
G'day We have walked past this site so many times and it just goes to prove that the practice of walking into doorways and exploring pays off. The display in the old priests house is amazing and it's difficult to make the leap back from where we are with appliances and living standards now to where these people were. Ok now this museum links into another by a glass air bridge and it's even more remarkable. In this museum is a much larger more extravagant display of the history of the region. It wasn't until this time did I know that Zwickau had a porcelain industry, coal mining and precious metals industries. There is also a good display of historical armour and weapons from the region (see photos). Now within 50m of all of this is the beautiful St Marian's Cathedral and I highly recommend some quality time in here. I don't know what it is but ..... this particular cathedral is very very peaceful. Cheers RobbeeSee more..

See more..

4.5Pressnitztalbahn(19 reviews) - First rate steam railway Speciality Museums
This preserved railway deep in Saxony is superb. The effort expended in reopening a section of the Wolkenstein to Johstadt line is clear to see. The locomotives are very well presented and the coaches are beautifully restored. Internally the coaches were very clean and warm on a cold day. The service was frequent and the route very attractive running alongside the river for much of its length. Facilities at Johstadt are adequate but will soon be improved I believe. Everyone on the railway was very friendly despite the language barrier. A small amount of English was spoken to day I visited. For photographers the line is excellent, so many possibilities! Many are easy to reach from the road whilst others require a walk along a forest track.See more..

4.0Soldaten an der Elbe(13 reviews) - Tiny (free-of-charge) exhibition to remember in Torgau Speciality Museums
In "The Soldiers on the Elbe" exhibition you can see 50 big photos from 1945 when the US and Soviet Red Army met by Torgau: the fact that made the town famous and inspired life-changing events for e.g. Joe Polowski. You can pick up an English description of the pictures too and can see the area of Torgau, soldiers and officers (even a lady from the Soviet Red Army), can see a US flag from 1945 and can easily spend 30-45 minutes inside. Since it is free of charge and there are not too many sites in Torgau I would call this one a must.See more..
