The Royal Porcelain Collection, Saxony, Germany

4.5 (399 reviews) Spent Ranking #15 in Dresden Speciality Museums

Great collection!

Do not come here tired! The museum is amazing and like a delicious dish it is worth savouring mindfully and leisurely. It is not only the collection itself that is awe inspiring, but also the way it is presented. The famous architect, who was involved in the project, made a marvelous job of making the atmosphere in the museum warm, homely and intimate.

Huge collection of oriental and Meißen porcelain
The collection is huge - be prepared for it! It is pretty easy to just wanter about and admire the pieces or - if you have a deeper interest - to read the extensive information labels about the collections and individual pieces. There are two parts to this museum - when you buy your ticket you will descend downstairs to what is quite a small gallery. Then - emerging onto an outside, curved staircase, go down to ground level and up the facing staircase to gain access to the second, much bigger part of this collection. When you're done, don't forget to go outside onto the top of the wall around the Zwinger - you can walk almost the whole way around. If you time it right and you're in the ticket buying area just before the hour, go over to the carillion - next to the small cafe on the window facing the inner courtyard of the Zwinger - and when the hour strikes, you can hear the tunes played on the ceramic bells from the works at Meißen.
