A museum of two halves. The museum of the more ancient history of Leipzig is on the first floor, and tastefully laid out in the beautiful old building. The more modern, and turbulent history of the area is on the second. Incredibly well laid out with obvious expertise from from the curators.See more..

OK - visiting castles in the state of Germany where they claim they have most (or almost so) is not a special thing - they have so many here that they have a super card called the "schlösserlandKARTE " for Saxony - giving free (or reduced) entry into well over 50 different properties or gardens - mostly castles or palaces that started off as castles though. So with that in mind and my brand new card in the pocket for the second year now we try to visit all of them - not an easy task may I add. Schloss Klippenstein is actually more like a castle - has it's origins in the 12th century apparently and is situated in the "Beer town" of Radeberg - about 20 min from Dresden via the Autobahn. The Schloss itself is a museum that has changing exhibitions but also permanent ones - the most interesting for me was the history of the town itself and the industries that used to be home here - but are no longer. Generally speaking it's a interesting place to visit but do not expect a medieval gem.See more..

In the basement of this building in a few small areas was a killing factory where the unimaginable number of nearly 15,000 people were gassed in the context of the euthanasia program "Aktion T4". The techniques are used later in the extermination camps in Poland. The rooms were dismantled during the war, but much is still visible ... and almost palpable ... and there are some minor reconstructions performed for clarification. The entire basement is now a space for remembrance. In the attic of the building is a documentation center with information about the victims and the perpetrators. For people with an interest in the Nazi period, this is a must see. The painted crosses are a memorial path through Pirna, each cross represents a victim. The trail is maintained by the youth. There is also a second memorial path, from the station, with a lot of small glass information boards.See more..
If Medieval Castles your thing that are left almost untouched by the centuries - this is the one for you. It's origins go back to the 12th century and thanks to some archaeological work carried out over the last few years the history of this great place slowly comes to light. They even have a small exhibition explaining how archaeology is done (one of my hobbies). The staff is very friendly and helpful and because the castle is owned by the wider community (essentially the village) they are in need of every EUR to support the further restoration - so I felt it is well time that someone put this one on the map of other castle mad visitors like me.See more..

Nachdem wir das Fastentuch in der Kirche zum heiligen Kreuz bewundert haben, sind wir mit der Kombikarte in das Städtische Museum, das im ehemaligen Franziskanerkloster untergebracht ist, gegangen. Hier befindet sich das zweite Fastentuch von Zittau. Aber das Museum hat viel mehr zu bieten. In den Klosterräumen und in der Kirche kann man viele historische Epitaphien sehen, aber auch alte Einrichtungsgegenstände. Viele Exponate stehen dicht beisammen, so dass sie nicht optimal zur Geltung kommen. Aber besser so, als sie weg zu schließen. Die Menge an Ausstellungsstücken ist überwältigend. Die Angestellten sind sehr freundlich und geben gerne Auskunft über das Kloster, bzw. den Zustand der Anlage vor der Wende. Wir waren sehr positiv überrascht und können dieses Museum weiter empfehlen.See more..

This little village is unique, as it offers an idea of the former rural lifestyle of this region. A great number of typical houses called Umgebindehäuser survived here. So the whole place gives testimony of the way houses were built I the 14 th to 19th century. The Schunkelhaus itself is now a museum, so you can also see the interior in ist traditional way. As the village was named museal village by the UNESCO, you will find a certain touristic infrastructure like apartments, nice guesthouses and cross cafes. But it is far from being touristic for now. Eines der schönsten Museen die ich in letzter Zeit besucht habe! Drei ehemalige Wohnhäuser sind zu einem Museum vereint und so gleicht kein Raum und kein Flur dem anderen. Hinter jeder Ecke gibt es etwas zu entdecken. Die Ausstellung ist wunderbar kuratiert. Beginnend beim Bereich über das Werk von e.o.plauen der mit seinen Vater und Sohn Geschichten die Welt erobert hat, Malereien von sächsischen Künstlern aus verschiedenen Epochen und eine sehr unterhaltsame Ecke zum Thema sächsische (vogtländische) Mundart. Zur Zeit wird die Ausstellung noch durch eine Vielzahl von Werken der Duckomenta ergänzt. Das sollte man sich keineswegs entgehen lassen. Man könnte fast meinen, die Werke wurden eigens für dieses Museum geschaffen. Wenn man sonst keinen Grund hat nach Plauen zu fahren, das Vogtlandmuseum ist es auf jeden Fall wert.See more..

This museum is located facing the Kurpark. It is an older property which has been modernised to provide a number of distinct display areas. There is good coverage of local history and prominent local figures. On the day we visited, we were the only visitors, which is disappointing given the quality of the resource. We were able to engage in conversation with the gentleman on duty on the reception desk and he answered our questions about the geo-political development of the region and recommended further reading. well worth a visit, but note access is difficult for anybody with mobility problems.See more..

The people of Saxony on Germany's far south border and the German-speaking people of Bohemia just across the border in then-Czechoslovakia shared a common history and culture for many centuries, up to the end of WWII (when Germany-speakers were expelled from Czechoslovakia as Nazi collaborators). This wonderful little museum contains displays on various aspects of that culture, including the farming and other industry of the area (eg, logging and mining), handicrafts (the area is well known for wooden toys, trinkets and Christmas decorations), furniture, dress and activities (including skiing). There are a number of excellent dioramas, many with moving parts, to aid the visitor's understanding. The displays also cross class lines, showing how both common folks and upper classes lived, what they wore, how they travelled, their furniture, etc. The museum is housed in an old armory that also served as a hospital during the Napoleonic wars. There is next to no English available, but the receptionist was able to explain to me that visitors should begin on the top floor and work downwards. After that I had to rely on Google translate when I needed help to make things out. Nonetheless, for anyone interested in this local life, I can highly recommend the museum.See more..

Aber klar: der eine ist einen Dreier, der Andere drei Cent Wert ... so pragmatisch kann man das sehen.
Losgelöst von diesen Überlegungen ist es allemal beeindruckend, was hier unter und in die Erde verbuddelt wurde, welche Technik es auch im Mangelsystem gegeben hat und wie hier die Szenarien eines weiteren Weltkrieges behandelt wurden. Das Schloss ist ein Hotel und Restaurant, der Dom ist separat beschrieben, aber das Museum ist für eine Kleinstadt von Wurzen eine Wucht. Vor- und Frühgeschichte mit einer Vielfalt an Ausgrabungen und Werkzeugen im Keller. Vier Handwerksberufe werden mit den ganzen Werkzeugen und historischer Einrichtung dargestellt. Ein örtlicher bildender Künstler verarbeitet seine Unterdrückung durch die DDR. Ein Teil ist Joachim Ringelnatz gewidmet, dem berühmsten Sohn der Stadt. Dessen Geburtshaus war Anfang Sept 2022 nicht gekennzeichnet noch besuchbar. Ein Modell der ehemaligen Bischofsstadt im Mittelalter ist dargestellt. Auch wird an die Fabrikinitiatoren erinnert, die Teppiche und Tapeten herstellten. Daneben erfährt man noch mehr über Wurzen, das durch die zentrale Lage zwischen zwei wichtigen Handelsstraßen früher viel wichtiger war als es heute erscheint. Man geht fast vorbei, weil dieses Museum so unscheinbar erscheint, aber wenn man einmal die Tür (die keine Öffnungszeiten im Moment aufweist) geöffnet hat, erschließt sich einem die große Welt des Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, die er einst begründet hat.See more..

Versteckt im Wald hat der Verein Historische Feldbahn Dresden e.V. in den letzten Jahren ein Freilichtmuseum von beachtlicher Dimension geschaffen. Besonders zu empfehlen sind die Feste z.B. zu Pfingsten, an denen der riesige Fuhrpark in Aktion erlebt werden kann und ein Personenzug durch das Gelände fährt. Wir schauen uns schon seit Jahren an, wie der rührige Verein das Gelände stetig weiterentwickelt. Alles in allem ein wunderbarer Ort für alle Generationen mit sehr fairen Eintrittspreisen, dessen Besuch sich auch wunderbar mit einem Ausflug in die benachbarte Sächsische Schweiz verbinden lässt.See more..
