The Church is named after St. Nicholas, patron of travelers and merchants. It also gained importance during the peaceful revolution with people gathering there from 1989 to 1991. - 4.5 Colditz Castle (538 reviews)
-Forbidding
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles • History Museums
With its striking white gables, Colditz Castle is one of the most beautiful Central German architectural monuments of the 16th century. It served as an important POW-camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies during World War II; Winston Churchill's nephew and the nephew of the then British King George VI were also among its prisoners. Secret radio rooms, tunnels broken through the masonry and a secretly built glider are examples of the many tales told of the numerous creative escape attempts in the »Escape Museum«. The book entitled »The Colditz Story« and its film adaptation have made Colditz world famous. Today, guests from all over the world can enjoy a princely stay at the European Youth Hostel and the unique atmosphere of Colditz Castle at events and concerts, in special exhibitions and on guided tours such as »In the Footsteps of the Prisoners« featuring a prisoners' feast. - 5.0 Burg und Kloster Oybin (134 reviews)
-Amazing place with magical atmosphere
Friday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Religious Sites
Embedded in a magical mountain landscape on the rock, the mighty ruins of the castle, which was built by Emperor Charles IV to his retirement home and a monastery of Cölestiner drone. The rock mass was not only a popular motive for the painters of the romance like C.D. Friedrich, also the Brothers Grimm wrote here the legend of the Jungfernsprung. Around the Oybin are many stories and legends about knights, witches, buried treasures, underground passages, real virgins and evil robbers - and who knows what treasures are still hidden and buried here today. Enjoy the medieval flair of the castle, the romantic walls and the beautiful view. The weather almost does not matter. In the rain and fog, the ruins look mystical, in winter romantic dreamy and in good weather, fantastic views. See more..
- 4.0 Karl May Museum (94 reviews)
-Better than expected
Friday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • History Museums
Welcome to the Karl May Museum in the city of Radebeul! Karl May (1842-1912), the creator of immortal novel heroes such as Winnetou, the brave and noble Apache chief, and his blood brother Old Shatterhand, is one of the most famous and best-selling German writers of all time with about 200 million copies worldwide. He is best known for his adventure novels set in the American Old West and in the Orient and Middle East. His works have been translated into more than 45 languages. Our Karl May Museum was established in Karl May’s former home “Villa Shatterhand” where our visitors can explore his eventful life and literary work, and immerse themselves in the adventurous world of the author from Saxony. The over 90-year-old Villa Bärenfett log cabin houses a collection on the cultural and historical living environments of the indigenous population of North America that is unique in Europe. We look forward to your visit! See more..
- 4.5 Bautzen Memorial (Gedenkstaette Bautzen) (90 reviews)
-Fascinating - but chillingly so close to the present day
Historic Sites
The name Bautzen was apparently synonymous in the GDR era with this prison for political prisoners; the whole is now open to the public (no charge) as a memorial to the evil that was done here. Visitors have access to most parts of this sprawling complex, left pretty much as it was when the East German state collapsed in 1989. Most disturbing are the tales of those imprisoned here - not figures from a distant generation, but people our own age, who perhaps risked escape from the GDR in their youth and still only in middle age today, suffered this awful experience. Other than an information leaflet, all the displays are in German only - but what you see is poignant enough without the explanations. Most definitely worth the detour - and the old town of Bautzen is a gem just 5 minutes drive away. See more..
- 4.0 Russische Gedachtniskirche (85 reviews)
-Scaffolding coming down
Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
The Saint Alexi Memorial Church in Leipzig commemorates the thousands of Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Nations (1813) and can easily be combined with a visit to the Volkerschlachtdenkmal and Sudfriedhof. It is open daily 10-17h with a pause from 13.15-14h. A donation of 1 euro is requested for good causes, which is a small price to pay to view the beautiful iconostasis. The church has been undergoing renovation but on the afternoon I visited the scaffolding seemed to be coming down. See more..
- 4.5 Der Dom St. Petri zu Bautzen (81 reviews)
-Interesting cathedral
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
This is a very interesting church as it's for both Catholics and Protestants. It is one of the biggest of this kind in Germany. The cathedral as it stands now was constructed between 1456 and 1463. In 1523, Lutherans started preaching in the church. Since 1530, both Catholics and Lutherans have shared the cathedral. Its most distinctive feature is the strongly protruding angulation, which is probably because the church was erected on the foundations of another church which was built around 1000. See more..
- 4.5 Schloß Muskau (50 reviews)

- 4.5 Leaning Tower of Bautzen / Reichenturm (39 reviews)
-Leaning Tower
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers
This is an interesting looking tower. The construction began in 1490. It survived several sieges and fires. In 1747 it was observed that the tower was leaning. It was not until 1953/54 that the inclination movement could be stopped by fastening the foundation. The tower still deviates from the vertical by 1.44 m at its top. Great photos of the tower can be taken from the street leading from the Market Sq. See more..
- 4.0 Landeskrone (36 reviews)
-A nice good walk up to the top for the scenery
Historic Sites
i went here a month ago and me and my work friends walked all the way up to the top of this famous landmark, on our walk up there we seen great views and the guides were very helpful but it was abit of the danger walking on the road as cars or coaches would appear out of nowhere and the road was so thin so was abit of a hassel. when we arrived at the restaurant at the top the drinks and beer was amazing :) all in all still a nice day out if you want to see the whole of the country from the top of the tower at the top See more..
- 4.0 Barockschloss Rammenau (29 reviews)
-Poor visitor policy
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Castles
We especially came to visit the castle and park with our children and a foreign friend from another city. On the entrance we were rejected, officially because one of us wasn't able to show a corona certificate. The cashier wouldn't even leave us have a look into the park (without visiting interiors), where between widespread meadows and flowerbeds there was no other person to see, to whom we might have posed a thread. So we had to leave the place, having to think of how to explain the kids, why they would not let us in: "we cannot go there because mum/dad have not been treated with experimental injections"?! So disappointing! (I am rating 2 stars because I really give my best to stay positive and the castle still might be worth to see, it the staff would make that possible) See more..

- 4.0 Burgruine Frauenstein (17 reviews)
-A truly romantic ruin
Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
We have the Margrave of Meissen to thank for the remaining castle ruin we see here today. And what a castle it was. There is an educational signed walk to do around the site and plenty of excellent viewing places along with the obligatory ruined tower view! Ramble about in peace and quiet during May when we visited. Also on-site and included in the admission is entry to the Silbermann Museum. Gottfried Silbermann was, apparently, a famous organ maker of the late 1600s and a story of his life and work is featured here. See more..

- 5.0 St.-Nikolai Church (12 reviews)
-Striking ruins
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries • Churches & Cathedrals
The chapel was financed by donations when first built. It was dedicated to St. Nicholas and St. Barbara . Before the construction of the chapel could be finished, it burned down in 1441. Due to the generosity of the citizens of the city, the chapel was largely rebuilt by 1444 on a much larger scale. In the course of the siege of the city in 1620 the Nikolaikirche was considerably destroyed and devastated. Only after the city fire on May 2, 1634 did the cathedral monastery plan to rebuild the church. Before the reconstruction of the church could begin, the timber was used by the Swedes to build palisades during their siege of the city in 1639 . After this siege, the intention was to rebuild the church again, but for financial reasons the cathedral monastery decided to rebuild the Church of Our Lady, which had burned down in 1634, instead. As a result, the Nikolaikirche has remained in ruins to this day. We loved looking around and seeing the old grave. It's such a beautiful place. See more..

- 4.0 Schloss Wolkenstein (11 reviews)
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Castles
See more..

-Schönste Fleischerei in Görlitz
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
-A very important memorial place
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Educational sites
The former GDR seems to be have been wonderful place for many people. This kind of impression you might get when you talk to some locals because their memories are somehow influenced by their emotions. To come back to reality and to experience the brutality if this system places like this a vital! It is a pitty that most parts of the former location are apartments now. Still the exhibition is well done and very moving. I would recommend to go there. Most displays are in German and English. You could spend 60 minutes there easily. See more..

-Riesa's City Hall nicely closes an average square

Not many can be impressed by the City Hall building. An average square is surrounded by few buildings. One of them and not outstanding it is the city hall.
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Cemeteries
See more..
