- 4.5 Schloss & Park Pillnitz (802 reviews)
-An excellent day's outing
Tuesday: 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Castles
Once a pleasure palace and later summer residence of the Saxon royals, it used to be the venue for many weddings and festivities back in Augustus the Strong’s time. Museums moved into the Palace in the 20th century and the Palace Park is the city’s most beautiful recreational resort for both Dresdeners and tourists from all over the world. Situated only about 15 km from the city center of the Saxon state capital of Dresden, the Pillnitz Palace & Park is regarded one of the most important chinoise palace estates throughout Europe. The ensemble of architecture and landscaping lies before the backdrop of the vineyards, harmoniously embedded in the riverscape of the Elbe River valley. With such diversity, it is thought to be a perfect destination for lovers of culture and gardens and for families. See more..

- 4.5 Colditz Castle (538 reviews)
-Forbidding
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles • History Museums
With its striking white gables, Colditz Castle is one of the most beautiful Central German architectural monuments of the 16th century. It served as an important POW-camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies during World War II; Winston Churchill's nephew and the nephew of the then British King George VI were also among its prisoners. Secret radio rooms, tunnels broken through the masonry and a secretly built glider are examples of the many tales told of the numerous creative escape attempts in the »Escape Museum«. The book entitled »The Colditz Story« and its film adaptation have made Colditz world famous. Today, guests from all over the world can enjoy a princely stay at the European Youth Hostel and the unique atmosphere of Colditz Castle at events and concerts, in special exhibitions and on guided tours such as »In the Footsteps of the Prisoners« featuring a prisoners' feast. - 4.5 Schloss Moritzburg (532 reviews)
-Beautiful castle
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
Beautiful palace! We went by car and the parking was around 3 euro for 2 hours but we did not need that much time because we did not go inside the castle. The best pictures can be taken however from outside of the island where the castle is located because then you can have the water on the photo too. My last photo was taken from the parking lot a bit further away from the castle. Nice activity on a sunny day. But don't expect much, I think one hour is okay. See more..
- 4.5 Albrechtsburg Castle (437 reviews)
-Worth a visit!
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Castles
The castle is definitely worth a visit. We combined visit of the castle with the visit of the Meissen porcelain factory. It was a wonderful full-day trip from Dresden. The castle is imposing from the outside. There are many rooms open to public on several floors. The walls are beautifully painted, for the rest the rooms are bare with no old furniture, tapestry, pictures etc. In some rooms there is a modern, interactive exhibition and it really takes some time to see it all. Buying a combined ticket for 11 euro also allows you to see the cathedral. Next to the cash-desk of the castle there is a small, but cosy cafe. See more..
- 4.5 Schloss Augustusburg (99 reviews)
-Stunning grand staircase!
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Castles
When Augustus, the Elector of Saxony, had Augustusburg Castle built between 1568–1572, he chose the site well. The hunting lodge and summer residence can been seen from afar as it towers 516 m above the Zschopau valley perched on a hilltop of porphyritic igneous rock. Even now, after more than 400 years, this monumental construction has lost none of its majesty. Its imposing position has led Augustusburg Castle to be known as the Crown of the Erzgebirge. Thanks to its grandeur and museums, today it is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Central Europe. Ever since it became a museum in 1922, Augustusburg Castle has been home to high quality exhibitions – and with the arrival of the Motorcycle Museum it also became known as the “BIKERS’ CASTLE”. Other attractions include the Stage Coach Museum, the Museum of Hunting and Ornithology and the Castle Dungeon. See more..
- 4.5 Burg Kriebstein (88 reviews)
-Spectacular Burg Kriebstein
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
Medieval Kriebstein Castle is situated in Middle Saxony, right at the centre of the triangle between the cities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Leipzig. Saxony’s most beautiful knight’s castle, a closed, fully preserved and completely reconstructed building complex from Late Gothic times, rises on a steep rock towering over the Zschopau River. Discover its 600 years of history when visiting it and feel as if you were back in the Middle Ages. Apart from its castle museum, Kriebstein has numerous events, guided tours as well as its castle inn »Zum Hungerturm« to offer. Today’s highlights to the visitor include a tour of the monumental residential tower, from its lowest cellar up to the medieval and historically preserved floors under the roof, of the castle chapel with precious murals from around 1410, of the Kriebstein Room, of the furnished interior used by the Arnim family and also of the castle well. Various banquet halls are available for weddings, family parties and business functions as well as for events of any kind. See more..

-Nice little gem
Temporarily closed - Closed until Apr 30, 2023 Castles
We went to this little castle after lunch in one of Moritzburg pubs and it was nice but quite a long walk about 2,2 km. You pass the lake and go up the hill. On just 12m square, this little Rococo palace offers sufficient space for holding court en miniature and is hence also called »Paradise in a Nutshell«.There is a visitor centre with air condiotioning next to it, where you can buy tickets, have a refreshment, go the toilet or use the storage. They also sell the souverniers. I can recommend their excellent ice coffee. The tour is every hour but only in German language, that I do not speak. Luckily my husband understands German so he translated for me.It is worth the visit, you could see the feather tapestries like those in the Moritzburg castle, tapestries made of reed, nice furniture and so on. I think it would be usefull if they have some paper about the castle at least in English for those who do no speak German. See more..
- 5.0 Neurathen Castle (85 reviews)
-Fairytale castle I have never heard of before!
Spent 2-3 hours Castles
I have found this amazing place just by googling around on Google maps. It was STUNNING! If you come early enough (8am) you can enjoy the beauty in solitude. Depends also on the season and weather. I would recommend sport shoes even though it is an easy walk. Suitable for kids as well as older people. It is less then 2h drive from Prague and you can have lunch and spend afternoon in Dresden, which is 45min away. If you are in Prague and you are looking for a getaway Saturday, this is your plan! -what a picturesque place
Tuesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Architectural Buildings • Castles
The picturesque Wasserschloss Klaffenbach, located on the southern outskirts of Chemnitz, was built in the 16th century and has now been turned into a cultural meeting point of a very special kind. Parallel to the river Würschnitz unfolds the general complex from closing buildings, hotel, restaurant and arts and crafts studio in the midst of a landscape park from green meadows, attractive golf course and popular walking ways. Changing exhibitions to arts and crafts, design and art as well as cultural programs in the lock, in addition, open air events and seasonal markets in the lock yard stand in the loose change on the meeting calendar. Beyond that the delightful ambience of the lock offers a special framework for professional conferences, seminars, receipts, weddings and private celebrations. See more..

-better each time
Tuesday: Castles
I have been here a year ago but could not access all areas due to a special exhibition and this time around we had a whole castle to explore and it did not disappoint. From it's medieval roots to relatively modern changes this place is well worth a visit for at least 3 hours if not more. There is something for everyone - the chapel with it's painted walls, the area where one can see the before and after photos and also the dungeons and prison cells as much as the royal apartments. The cafe at the entrance is also worth a visit (self service). See more..

-Poor visitor policy
Tuesday: Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Castles
We especially came to visit the castle and park with our children and a foreign friend from another city. On the entrance we were rejected, officially because one of us wasn't able to show a corona certificate. The cashier wouldn't even leave us have a look into the park (without visiting interiors), where between widespread meadows and flowerbeds there was no other person to see, to whom we might have posed a thread. So we had to leave the place, having to think of how to explain the kids, why they would not let us in: "we cannot go there because mum/dad have not been treated with experimental injections"?! So disappointing! (I am rating 2 stars because I really give my best to stay positive and the castle still might be worth to see, it the staff would make that possible) See more..

I grew up int he area and remember spending time at the youth hostel when I was younger. I hadn't been there in years but my dad took me on a visit just before Christmas. It was very quiet so we could take our time walking around and exploring the rooms. I was very surprised that there is so much to see and was particularly impressed by the exhibition about clothing in different periods of time incl underwear. I was very positively surprised and would visit again and also recommend people to take some time out of their day to look around the castle. It's well worth it. See more..

- 4.0 Schloss Wildeck (15 reviews)
-Imoressive collection
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
Wildeck Castle, built on the foundations of a weir system from the 12th century, watched over the ford on the Zschopau day and night. Refugees and traders who were once on the "Bohemian Steig" between the merchant metropolis of Leipzig and the royal city of Prague found protection here. Originally, they mainly transported salt from the Halle region to Bohemia, which is why the route is also known as the "Salt Road". Today, only the "Fat Henry" (orig. “Dicker Heinrich”), a residential and watchtower over 30 meters high with walls several meters thick, testifies to the defiant military complex. The former Wildeck Castle was converted into a far less martial hunting lodge by Duke Moritz of Saxony in the middle of the 16th century and served as the seat of the local forest and game mastery from the 17th to the early 20th century. Today, the white Renaissance castle, visible from afar, is home to several museums that are particularly dedicated to the industrial history of the region. See more..

-Must see hidden gem
Temporarily closed - Closed until Mar 31, 2023 Castles
We went here because we had the "Schloesserland Karte" - otherwise we might not even have known about it. This is a true historical gem in terms of medieval castle architecture. It's origins go back to the 12th century and it has been changed many times over the centuries but thanks to some great archeology the history of this stunning place can be retraced (at least in part). They had two great exhibitions on when we visited - and the walk through part of the castle and the burg fried (tower) told of the families who lived here. My personal favorite was the small vitrine with the ladies head dresses from the past 500 years - amazing to see such things as textiles usually don't survive. It possibly could do with a bit more english translations though. However I assume that because it is off the beaten track and there is only so much money to around that this is not a priority - but it's not a biggy. See more..

-Hidden Medieval Gem
Spent 1-2 hours Castles • History Museums
If Medieval Castles your thing that are left almost untouched by the centuries - this is the one for you. It's origins go back to the 12th century and thanks to some archaeological work carried out over the last few years the history of this great place slowly comes to light. They even have a small exhibition explaining how archaeology is done (one of my hobbies). The staff is very friendly and helpful and because the castle is owned by the wider community (essentially the village) they are in need of every EUR to support the further restoration - so I felt it is well time that someone put this one on the map of other castle mad visitors like me. -ein schön erhaltenes Schloss mit einer schönen Aussicht
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Castles
See more..
- 4.0 Schloss Voigtsberg (11 reviews)
-Tolles Schloss
Tuesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
Let yourself be whisked away to times long ago: First in possession of the bailiffs of Strassberg and Plauen, the castle was used as an electoral office by the Wettins later on. The defiant building complex of the »older part« is set apart from the newer buildings of the outer bailey, respectively. Still today, visitors are impressed by the Gothic St. George’s Chapel with its sacral pieces of art, by the Schoesserstube parlor with its splendid Baroque ceiling as well as by the Knights’ and the Princes’ Halls. The exhibition is rounded off by an invaluable painting by Tizian. Tied to the 130-year history of local machine and industrial carpet weaving, the Oeslnitz Carpet Museum at Voigtsberg Castle is dedicated to this frequently »trampled-on« textile. The exhibition provides information about the various manufacturing techniques and the variety of designs. At last, the »Oelsnitz Minerals Vault« is presented in the historical vaults. Castles
I've known about this one for years - mainly through a magic show that was based there and well televised in Germany - but we actually never visited before. It's perched high on a rocky outcrop - overlooking the river and small village below (no doubt a very strategic position when it was built). It dates back to the 14th century and must be one of the few still intact castles of the area (there are a few more in Saxony). It goes over 4 levels and one can book a guided tour (but I think it's for 10 or more people). On the inside a lot has been renovated in the 17th century so it's a bit of a mishmash of historical phases but that is what one would expect. They do weddings and other functions there and I saw a flyer about a middle ages market as well. Overall I great castle to visit but a bit out of the way See more..

Die Burg Stein erhebt sich über der Zwickauer Mulde, in Nähe des Bahnhofs von Hartenstein.
