Schlesisches Museum Gorlitz, Saxony, Germany

4.5 (60 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Gorlitz Speciality Museums

Görlitz is a gem in Sachsen, and this museum tells its story :)

I only had 24 hours in Görlitz, and the Schlesisches Museum is a good first stop. You can view multiple painted wooden ceilings dating from the Renaissance in this multi-building complex. There are some amazing carvings to be seen, including a set of coal miner figures carved out of - what else - hunks of coal, as well as various depictions of the legendary figure of Rübenzahl, the spirit of the mountains. Check out the Medieval shop next door and ask the bearded gentleman there to blow one of the big horns for you...straight up out of Lord of the Rings!

Fascinating history in a beautifully renovated building
The history of Silesia is fascinating and full of drama. This history comes to life in the imaginative way the artifacts are presented in a beautful setting. It is a long history so give yourself plenty of time to absorb it and combine it with a walking tour. (Tickets at Tourist Info and only 7 euros per person). Museum ticket is also reasonably priced and you can buy a combo ticket valid for 2 days.

Gave me a whole depth of knowledge about this particular region
It is very easy to get one's history of MittelEuropa muddled. This region is a cross-roads and the modern borders don't reflect the complex history of the area. This museum provides a good overview of the Silesian region, albeit mostly in German and Polish. The bit about the 1945-1946 period was very moving and it is clear that many of the older people in this area have stories to tell. Plan on at least 2 hours to see this museum.
