A Must for Van de Velde Fans
Villa Esche – designed by Henry van de Velde in 1902/1903 for the Chemnitz-based stocking manufacturer Herbert Esche – is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture and a historical monument of European rank. The Art Nouveau villa is a highlight of the European Henry van de Velde Route. Today it serves as a conference venue, event setting and location and houses the first Henry van de Velde museum in Germany.

A Must for Van de Velde Fans
The Museum is fascinating as it mostly contains things created for Villa Esche. Make sure you come at the time the Museum is open, which can be different from the time the Villa is open. The guide is all in German, but if you know Van de Velde, it is still worth it. We had a German speaker with us, so got the translation. The house and its contents are fascinating. You can even see how his style changed over the years as he did more work for them.

Very surprising stuff in Chemnitz!
I just loved the Villa Esche! We came along with a friend and felt very welcome - though no guided tours were on plan, two nice ladies were ready to tell us about the history, the character and the rooms of the villa. The villa itself is a very charming example of Henry van de Velde's work on German territory - and a beautiful one, as it keeps a very specific personality, without being fussy.
