4.0Pictograph Cave State Park(428 reviews) - steep climb to the cave, not very stroller friendly Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Pictograph Cave State Park is a National Historic Landmark known for its importance to Northern Plains Archaeology. Visitors will learn about the rock art and artifacts found here which dates thousands of years old. This 23 acre park features walking trails, stunning scenery, a green-design visitor's center, picnic grounds, museum displays, everything you need for a fun and educational visit! The site is well-known for its' spirit writing. Soluble minerals leach through the sandstone and cover the rock art, but when the wall becomes wet, on rare instances, that veil of minerals will lift (becomes transparent) revealing what is hidden beneath. On a dry day you may see 5-9 pictographs, but on the brief, wet occurrences, 10-15 more images may appear in better detail. The Crow people believe that many of these images were drawn by the spirits, and whichever ones you see are meant to give you a personal message or even foretell future events.See more..
Sadly the foundation is closed Indefinitely due to flooding and renovation. Not all is lost though. There is a 1/2 mile loop trail with interesting signposts regarding elk. I recommend you walk this trail. It's an easy walk no hills to climb, you don't need to be a hiker. See more..
4.0Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary(135 reviews) - DOING IMPORTANT WORK! Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary's mission is providing lifelong sanctuary to non-releasable Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem wildlife while sharing a message of education and conservation. For 35 years, we have provided homes to animals like bison, bears, mountain lions, wolves, hawks, owls, and foxes that rescue/rehab centers declare to be too badly injured, too habituated to humans, or too emotionally damaged to live in the wild. The Sanctuary offers visitors an unparalleled chance to learn about native wildlife by observing them at close range and experiencing our interpretive displays. We also offer custom-tailored guided tours, whether it's for just yourself, or a whole busload of kids from your school, club, or camp. Each animal that we accept becomes our responsibility for the rest of its life. At the same time, each of those animals provides an educational opportunity that can prevent other local animals from ending up in a facility like ours. Closed Jan - Mar.See more..
After visiting Kootenai Falls, make a trip here. So glad we did. Something about the stillness, solitude and seeing these majestic trees that just calms the soul. Arrived 3:00 on a Friday, 9/9/22, only 4 cars in lot. Plenty of benches to sit and soak it all in. Great way to end our day.See more..
I request Lee Metcalf in all seasons. It's a wonderful and even magical place sometimes! Depending upon the season one never knows what you'll see. My only problem is the development encroaching on the land and the wildlife and the hunters who simply should not be allowed here.See more..
3.5Blackfeet Indian Reservation(56 reviews) - Cute town, just like any other town. Saturday: Points of Interest & Landmarks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Rich in culture and heritage, beautiful scenery, premier fishing lakes, RV camping and primitive camping. The Blackfeet Reservation has a varied topographic makeup ranging from the grasslands and river valleys of its agricultural areas in the central and eastern parts of the reservation to the heavily-forested mountainous region along the western boundary. 4.0Tally Lake Campground(31 reviews) - Wooded Nice Campground Nature & Wildlife Areas
Tally Lake is the deepest lake in Montana. The water is clean and untouched - there are no houses surrounding the lake. The campground is large and clean with lots of space between campsites. Most sites are under tall trees, which keep out the hot summer sun. The campground has a boat ramp and a great public swimming beach. Near the group site, there are small cliffs (20 feet tall) people enjoy jumping off into the cool water. We have always enjoyed camping at Tally Lake Campground. Be sure to reserve a space early, because this campground is popular not only with locals, but many Canadians have discovered it as well.See more..

5.0Jewel Basin Hiking Area(21 reviews) - Clayton Lake Trail #420 Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
Awesome hike except the trail was overgrown and someone took a machete to it and left sharp blunt sicks into the trail which both my wife and I have huge scratches on our legs. I would recommend using soccer shin protectors. The fishing was great, 15-16 inch cuts that fight till the end. The hike was 1 h 45 m in and 1 h out. from the hungry horse reservoir west side road. Trail # 420 off Clayton Creek. Also recommend bear spray, we saw sign of Grizzly bears..See more..

5.0Lemhi Pass(16 reviews) - Spectacular views and a peek at history Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
First of all, don’t be scared by the drive. We came up from Dillon and descended to Salmon with no problem. Of course, normal precautions while driving dirt and gravel roads should be taken. That said, this place is remote enough so that I cannot imagine it ever being crowded. This means that one gets to read and digest the excellent interpretative signs as well as drink in the wonder of the views. Knowing that Lewis and Clark stood in this very spot adds a little dash. 5.0Hugh Rogers Wag Park(14 reviews) - Hugh Rogers Wag Park is fantastic! Spent < 1 hour Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Playgrounds
There are dog parks and then there’s Hugh Rogers Wag Park. The wag park is so much better than your average dog park! There are several acres totally fenced along with a separate pond area where the dogs can swim! There’s even a doggie shower where the dogs can rinse off after their swim! We come here almost every day as we think our dogs would have us locked up if we didn’t! If you have dog friends, don’t miss this wonderful place!See more..

This park is nestled on the west shore of Flathead Lake. While the park is not huge it is still packed with activities. In addition there are great views of the east shore and Bob Marshal Wilderness Area. While many of the amenities are unavailable in winter it is still a beautiful spot for photography with plenty of hiking trails available as well. Be prepared~ bear spray is always a good idea, not all bears are hibernating. See more..
4.5Big Arm State Park(9 reviews) - Another fine Montana playground State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
As with many Montana State Parks this time of year, there is a minimal amount of activities available. However our unfortunate lack of snow and unusual warm temperatures has allowed for easier access to hiking for what ever that's worth! The park is nestled on the south west coast of Flathead Lake, on US 93, south of Rollins. In addition to hiking, boating, picnicking and other outdoor activities, the park is well suited for substantial camping. Some of the amenities include, reserved campsites, grills, tables, water spigots, bathrooms and showers. On this mild January day walking the rocky beach and short trails proved a perfect afternoon getaway. Remember if you carry it in, carry it out and be Bear Aware! There is a $6. day use fee for non residents, camping fees are higher.See more..

5.0Freezout Lake(4 reviews) - A Prairie Jewel Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Freezeout Lake is Montana's primary snow goose staging area, a place where as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans gather and rest before flying onward. In Spring, the snow geese head for Alberta and central Saskatchewan in Canada. There they mass with hundreds of thousands of other snow geese from Texas and other Gulf Coast States. In a series of shorter flights, the geese then make their way to nesting grounds on the wind swept, extreme northwest Arctic coast of Canada. The Snow Geese usually reach Freezeout Lake in early March, where they rest up from a nearly 1,000 mile flight from California. Best viewing of the birds is from sunrise to 10:00am and from 4:30pm until sunset. Binoculars, telescopes, a light lunch, and possibly warm clothing will make your viewing more enjoyable.See more..
5.0Savenac Historic Tree Nursery(3 reviews) - Beautiful park-like place with comfortable lodging Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Forests
We visited here for several days for a wedding event. I was surprised at the great facilities, including a professionally equipped kitchen, full bathrooms and multiple buildings with comfortable beds. The surroundings are beautiful with towering trees of different types, clearly marked with their names. We really enjoyed the camp fire area and the horse shoe pits. This made a great setting for the outdoor wedding. We also enjoyed the picnic area with many tables in the shade of some trees. There's also a good sized fishing pond on the property.See more..
5.0Lolo Natioal Forest(3 reviews) - An amazing play ground National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
The Lolo National Forrest is expansive and this was my first trip to the western region. This was actually closer to Frenchtown and Husan then to Seeley Lake. We intended to hike Crystal Peak but access to the trailhead was dicey, we hiked any way on service roads. Even in the winter there is plenty to do. Winter hiking is a favorite as well as cross country skiing and snow shoeing. As with any back country activity it is imperative to be prepared for any situation, including having supplies and unexpected aggressive encounters. As always respect the back country.See more..

4.5Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex(3 reviews) - A well kept secret Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails My wife and I were staying in Hungry Horse while on a vacation to Glacier National Park. On a whim, we decided to visit the reservoir and wilderness area. We were not sure what to expect because there was little info available. You will find a spectacular reservoir with views all the way down the valley. If you cross over the dam, you can drive into the wilderness and not see another human for miles. Lots of scenery looking across the reservoir to the mountains.See more..
4.5Leisure Island Park(3 reviews) - Great preserve by the Flathead River Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails
This is a great open and undeveloped green space not far from town. Its easy access is perfect if you want some space and don't have a lot of time. There are numerous quasi trails for exploring and plenty of river bank to follow and explore as well. There is usually an abundance of wildlife to observe. Taking the dogs down here for a run and some exercise is another favorite pass time. A word of caution, there are private lands adjacent to the preserve which need to be respected. There is also hunting allowed in certain areas so be aware. See more..

4.5Thompson Falls State Park(2 reviews) - Day pass visitor State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas We did not camp at this park, but the campsites appeared to be nicely spaced apart and there are not very many of them. The trail to the left is nicely maintained and has some benches to sit and relax to enjoy the river.See more..

5.0Fairy Lake(2 reviews) - Stunningly Beautiful Lake with Difficult Driving Access Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
This is one of the most beautiful little alpine lakes that are located in the Bridger Mountains near Bozeman, Montana. The long, gravel and dirt access road will likely damage the undercarriage of a normal passenger car, though that doesn't stop many locals from thrashing their old car to get there. The lake is only a few hundred yards away from the parking lot, which has picnic tables. There is a walking trail around the small lake and a couple of steep hiking trails will take you to the nearby peaks. There you will likely run into a mountain goat family, but the views of Gallatin Valley and the city of Bozeman on the other side of the ridge are special and worth the trip if you are relatively fit and are wearing sturdy shoes. 5.0Stanton Lake(1 review) - Great hike, spectacular views, a beautiful lake Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
This had been on my to do list for quite a while. It was a good day to do this, good road conditions and moderate temperatures, low 30's (0-2 c). The trail head to the lake is easy to spot if you pay attention, I happened to blow past it and had to turn around. The trail head is about 20 minutes east of West Glacier. There is parking at the trail head but the lot is not maintained well in the winter. You'll need 4 wheel drive to get in, I parked by Clear Sky Resorts and walked the two minutes to the trail. The trail to the lake is spectacular offering breathtaking views and a moderate work out. To the southwest edge of the lake was about four miles (6.2 km) out and back. There were some steep inclines made difficult by the packed snow and ice, boot cleats would have been helpful. With the lake frozen I was able to walk out (and dance) and get a an incredible view of Great Northern Mountain and Mt. Grant. With time at the lake this adventure was just about two hours. If you add in the hour ride each way to and from Kalispell, it makes this about a four hour adventure, a perfect day's outing!! Loved it!! Remember if you carry it in, carry it out, descending yields to ascending, be bear aware!!!See more..
3.0Tower Rock State Park(1 review) - Hidden in plain sight State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
I have driven past this place for nearly 15 years and had no idea it was there until I went looking for it on my way home from a roadtrip. The trail doesn't go all the way up to Tower Rock, but stops at a bench that also overlooks the river (and the interstate).See more..
