    Pompeys Pillar National Monument image
Lucky lovely day to visit as warm weather in April made for delightful stroll on the trail and up the steps to view the carved William Clark signature, petroglyphs and pioneer signings. The view from atop the pillar is a nice vista of the Yellowstone River and surrounding plains. The visitors center was not yet open, but the placards provided ample details of the Corps of Discovery encampment nearby - and a replica dual dugout canoe was a very keen project work to see. Nice way to spend a couple hours at an easy hike national monument with important history. See more..

"Our Lady of the Rockies", a 90-foot statue sitting atop the Continental Divide is the result of a dream and six years of hard work. With the help of generous donations and a wealth of love and faith, countless volunteers completed a seemingly impossible task. - More than just a rest stop~

    Marias Pass Obelisk image
While this surly serves a great rest stop with beautiful views, the historical importance should not be overlooked. In addition to marking the Continental Divide and the Marias Pass' elevation of 5213' (1589 m), it pays homage to John E. Stevens the civil engineer for Great Northern Railroad. The railroad opened rail service to the west coast and there is a large statue of Stevens at the base of the obelisk. There are two other plaques, one for William Morrison who had squatter rights to 100 acres at the summit. The second is dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt who created the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Across from the obelisk, on the opposite side of the parking lot, there are two large displays with maps and more history about the area and the local Native American tribes. Worth a few minutes if you have the time. See more..
  5. 5.0 Bleu Horses (7 reviews)
    - Wonderful and inviting public art!

    Bleu Horses image
Beautifully crafted and highly detailed herd of horses displayed in a stunning landscape. Certainly hope there's a breeze while you visit. It will animate the rope manes and tails on these ponies. Look carefully as you approach and you'll find a small pull-off area, and a bit of exploration will reveal a fairly well worn pathway up the hill. A bit steep, but nothing very strenuous to get up among the herd. We found it very well worthwhile to trek up to admire the work and the views. See more..
  6. 4.0 Shep Memorial (4 reviews)
    - Shep, a Legendary Story of a Faithful Dog

    Shep Memorial image
The timeless story about Shep is one of legends. It’s the story of the faithfulness between a dog and the owner. “Until death do us part.” If you end up in Fort Benton, or you are passing by Fort Benton, it is worth the stop to learn about this legendary dog that faithfully waited for the return of his master at the railroad station until the day he died. It’s a heart wrenching story that I was told as a kid in the 70’s, but I still hold near and dear to my heart now that I am in my 50’s. Shep is buried on top of a hill overlooking the railroad and Fort Benton. A small monument has been placed at Shep’s gravesite. See more..
