Carbon County Historical Society and Museum image
Located in Red Lodge's historic Labor Temple Building, the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum is the county's central source for historic, genealogical, and archival information about Carbon County, Montana. The museum was first established in 1959 by Alice Greenough to house the collection of her world-renowned rodeo family. The Carbon County Historical Society was formed in 1974, and incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1975. In 1990, the three-story Labor Temple building was gifted to the Carbon County Historical Society by an anonymous donor. In 1909 the Labor Temple was completed in Red Lodge on the corner of 8th and Billings Ave (now Broadway). This four-story, 20,000 sq. ft. Labor Temple Building was constructed by the Red Lodge Miners Local No. 1771 for $36,000, using a quarter of a million bricks from the Fromberg brick yard. It once served more than 1,000 union miners in Carbon County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The historical society received money through grants, and private donations to restore the main floor and basement. In June 1999, the Labor Temple once again opened its doors to the community as the county's museum. The historical society is in the process of raising funds to restore and renovate the top two floors, with a completion date goal of 2017. See more..

On our way from Rapid City to Cody we stopped at Broadus, Montana. A friendly lady advised us to visit the local museum. The place is run by volunteers and is stacked with relics of old days. We got a free guided tour through the museum and its annexes (an old school room, a log cabin and a garage). Want to see a Ford model T and a convertible straight out of "Happy Days"? This is the place to be. Many people must have devoted much of their spare time to build this unique place. Some days nobody visits the museum, most days only a few people. However, the stories that are told there and the things that are shown offer an interesting view of life in rural America as it used to be. We stayed way much longer than we had originally intended and loved every minute of it. See more..

I was glad to find this open as I have not had much luck with museums lately. While the museum is small, as expected, it is huge on information. Detailed in the museum is the evolution of Cut Bank and Glacier County. On display are artifacts and details from the various aspects of the development. Of the numerous features, those such as Lewis and Clark and the conflicts with the Blackfeet were particularly interesting. Also featured are some of the carvings of John Clark a member of the Blackfeet and a replica of a homestead house. I was fortunate enough to have a one on one tour with Dennis giving me an excellent education on so much history. An hour is a reasonable amount of time. The museum is located on the out skirts of town, if you follow the signs carefully you will find it. See more..

Besides interesting displays there are surprising bits of history about the Whitehall area like news broadcaster Chet Huntley (Huntley-Brinkley Report from the 1960s-70s) being a graduate of the local high school; the first woman elected to congress taught school in Whitehall; and, a newly restored phone switchboard can be demonstrated by the staff and visitors can talk to each other on old style crank phones. An intriguing little place! Had fun walking around and peeking through the windows. The names on the sidewalk absolutely captivated my imagination. On the property, there was an old abandoned wagon. The texture of the place was not unlike the feeling I get when visiting a ghost town. Unfortunately the hours listed here seem to be inaccurate, when I got there there was a sign on the door saying that access to the inside of the museum is by appointment. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time so I could have made an appointment, but we had a fantastic time nonetheless! See more..

We saw their sign on our way to Kootenai Falls and had to stop in to check it out. Very interesting artwork! We especially liked the robot sculptures made from various reclaimed auto, electronic, and aviation parts with a "steam punk" kind of look. We purchased one of the larger, floor-standing sculptures for our home. See more..
