  23. 4.5 Fishtail General Store (19 reviews)
    - Great Coffee at Fishtail Grind
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Fishtail General Store image
My husband and I had a terrific cup of coffee this morning at the Fishtail Grind. We enjoyed chatting with Kirk as he put together our fabulous lattes made with soy milk (we can't handle regular milk these days). The Grind is immediately to your right as you enter the General Store -- which is also alot of fun, by the way. You have to purchase any baked goods in the General Store because it is a separate business. We bought a blackberry pie and brought it home. But we ate our poppyseed muffin there at the Grind. It was pretty big so we split one muffin and took the other home (along with the pie). They do cold brew at the Grind. We sampled it. Very smooth. But I prefer my coffee hot. Highly recommend this place. See more..

    Marias Pass Obelisk image
While this surly serves a great rest stop with beautiful views, the historical importance should not be overlooked. In addition to marking the Continental Divide and the Marias Pass' elevation of 5213' (1589 m), it pays homage to John E. Stevens the civil engineer for Great Northern Railroad. The railroad opened rail service to the west coast and there is a large statue of Stevens at the base of the obelisk. There are two other plaques, one for William Morrison who had squatter rights to 100 acres at the summit. The second is dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt who created the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Across from the obelisk, on the opposite side of the parking lot, there are two large displays with maps and more history about the area and the local Native American tribes. Worth a few minutes if you have the time. See more..

Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Champions Park image
At first this did not seem like much of a destination. But when I arrived I was impressed. One of the main attractions was the story of the Dempsey-Gibbons fight of 1923 and how it came to be, an obscure part of history. It also gives a capsulized history of Shelby and the surrounding area. There are several kiosks each with a specific aspect, IE; homesteading, and oil discovery etc. The few minutes that I spent there was worthwhile as I received an education and information about the area. It is close to the Carousel Rest Area and is worth the short walk and a few minutes. There are benches to sit and relax in. See more..
