Our Lady of the Rockies image
"Our Lady of the Rockies", a 90-foot statue sitting atop the Continental Divide is the result of a dream and six years of hard work. With the help of generous donations and a wealth of love and faith, countless volunteers completed a seemingly impossible task. On December 29, 1985 "Our Lady" was placed on the East Ridge to overlook Butte, Montana. The base sits at an elevation of 8510 feet above sea level and 3500 feet above the mile high city of Butte. The statue, lighted and visible at night, is a spectacular sight to behold. See more..

  7. 3.5 Dumas Brothel Museum (78 reviews)
    - Dumas Brothel Museum
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mysterious Sites
    Dumas Brothel Museum image
The Dumas Brothel is located in the heart of the old Red-Light district in Uptown Butte, Montana USA. Built in 1890, the Dumas' sole purpose was to serve the predominately male population that sprang out of Butte's mining boom. As a house of prostitution, it operated for 92 years until its closure in 1982, making it America's longest running "house of ill-repute." As the only brothel remaining in Butte Montana, the Dumas is now a museum & antique shop. Tours of the Dumas brothel are available year-round, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dumas is also the last vestige of the Victorian Brothel style architecture existing in the United States today. Since 2012, the new owner's have been diligently working to preserve, restore, and protect the 126 year old iconic structure from meeting its demise. Butte's Red-Light district was the largest and most expansive in the West, and visiting the Dumas Brothel recalls a time when vice was key to Butte's rise to prominence, second only to its success as a mining metropolis. 10. 4.0 Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park (43 reviews)
    - Lives up to all the great art work I’ve seen
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Parks
Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park image
We’ve all seen a lot of artwork showing off the beauty of the Anaconda smoke stack. To be honest I didn’t think the real thing could possibly live up to the hype (Montana’s Mona Lisa anyone?) but we decided to check it out during our visit to the greater Anaconda area. Let me tell you, it is as beautiful and majestic in person as it is on canvas. Truly a sight to behold. Definitely worth a visit and it’s free too! I don’t want to give the fat cats in Helena any ideas, but I’d gladly pay a few bucks to stand in the shadow of the Anaconda smoke stack. Truly one of the greats! See more..

  14. 4.5 Fishtail General Store (19 reviews)
    - Great Coffee at Fishtail Grind
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Fishtail General Store image
My husband and I had a terrific cup of coffee this morning at the Fishtail Grind. We enjoyed chatting with Kirk as he put together our fabulous lattes made with soy milk (we can't handle regular milk these days). The Grind is immediately to your right as you enter the General Store -- which is also alot of fun, by the way. You have to purchase any baked goods in the General Store because it is a separate business. We bought a blackberry pie and brought it home. But we ate our poppyseed muffin there at the Grind. It was pretty big so we split one muffin and took the other home (along with the pie). They do cold brew at the Grind. We sampled it. Very smooth. But I prefer my coffee hot. Highly recommend this place. See more..

    Magruder Corridor image
Excellent trip in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee. Fire lookouts were all great. Road up to Burnt Knob should only be done in high clearance vehicle but worth the effort. We went from Darby Mt. to Elk city Idaho in one day but it took all day to do it. Next time we will stay at least one night on the Corridor in one of the camp grounds. My wife and I did it solo. Mostly adventure sport motorcycles and 4 other vehicles were all we saw. See more..

    Marias Pass Obelisk image
While this surly serves a great rest stop with beautiful views, the historical importance should not be overlooked. In addition to marking the Continental Divide and the Marias Pass' elevation of 5213' (1589 m), it pays homage to John E. Stevens the civil engineer for Great Northern Railroad. The railroad opened rail service to the west coast and there is a large statue of Stevens at the base of the obelisk. There are two other plaques, one for William Morrison who had squatter rights to 100 acres at the summit. The second is dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt who created the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Across from the obelisk, on the opposite side of the parking lot, there are two large displays with maps and more history about the area and the local Native American tribes. Worth a few minutes if you have the time. See more..

    - Wonderful and inviting public art!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Bleu Horses image
Beautifully crafted and highly detailed herd of horses displayed in a stunning landscape. Certainly hope there's a breeze while you visit. It will animate the rope manes and tails on these ponies. Look carefully as you approach and you'll find a small pull-off area, and a bit of exploration will reveal a fairly well worn pathway up the hill. A bit steep, but nothing very strenuous to get up among the herd. We found it very well worthwhile to trek up to admire the work and the views. See more..

When we stepped out of our car, we saw wooden homes and a wagon that was falling apart. These were built in 1870. It was used as a bunkhouse. The logs were fitting together. 27. 5.0 Champions Park (4 reviews)
    - Interesting as well as educational
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Champions Park image
At first this did not seem like much of a destination. But when I arrived I was impressed. One of the main attractions was the story of the Dempsey-Gibbons fight of 1923 and how it came to be, an obscure part of history. It also gives a capsulized history of Shelby and the surrounding area. There are several kiosks each with a specific aspect, IE; homesteading, and oil discovery etc. The few minutes that I spent there was worthwhile as I received an education and information about the area. It is close to the Carousel Rest Area and is worth the short walk and a few minutes. There are benches to sit and relax in. See more..
  28. 4.5 Hornet Lookout (4 reviews)
    - Historic fire tower, great view, can rent overnight
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Hornet Lookout image
This was our second fire tower stay - what a neat adventure! It is a journey on unpaved roads to the trailhead, a mile uphill hike, and then a wonderful 360 degree panoramic view. You can reserve the lookout for an overnight stay. The lookout is equipped with two cots, camp stove, fire ring, and pit toilet. You'll need to bring your own food, water, possibly propane canister, sleeping bags and flashlights. There is a second story loft to view the surroundings and some great journals of the lookout's history and prior guests. There are lots of bees, bugs, and bear spray is recommended in this area. The evening views are beyond description! See more..

  30. 4.0 Rocky Point Nature Trail (4 reviews)
    - Short, easy, tranquil but still worth it
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
    Rocky Point Nature Trail image
This is not an ‘epic’ hike on the scale of Grinnell Glacier Trail or some of others in the park. However, it also does not require an epic commitment in terms of planning or time. This trail is perfect if you’re in W. Glacier, it’s getting late, and you still want to get in another scenic hike in 2 hours or less. The tranquil views of the lake are pretty enough, the ‘beach’ does give a good opportunity to dip your legs in the lake. But, do round the bend at Rocky Point and you will come upon views of the more majestic, rugged mountains to the north. There is a spot on the rocks you can scramble/slide down to and stand as the waves lap at your feet. My shoes got soaked when a big one came in—it was worth it. See more..

Timothy Dillon Bowman died at the age of 18. The benches are made of wood. There are stained-glass windows behind the altar. They have sunday services at 11:00 A.M. The cross is at the top of the church. We have a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains. See more..
  32. 4.5 Yesterday Cafe (3 reviews)
    - eating, back to school in 1903
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
this was the best lunch my husband and i have had in a long time. going home to dillon from jackson hole wy, we were 30 miles out of dillon at dell, mt., when we decided to stop and eat. this is a school built in 1903, that has beem turned into a resturant and an attraction. the building is still original, with upto date appliances . you eat on large tables, fit to hold a family of 6-8 people. the food is home cooked and large portions and all the homemade pies , if not eaten there, at least one choice should be taken home. the school room you eat in is just as it was in the 1900s and filled with books and things from that time. this is a great place for both adults and children to stop and eat at and also picture taking is welcome, especially outside, where you can still ride your horse in and tie it up for achool, thats where you will be partking. - Good food, good place
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Hennessey Market is a well-planned store in one of uptown Butte's most beautiful old buildings. Go there just to enjoy the historic façade, with world-class beveled glass accents.....Butte has plenty of 'picturesque squalor,' but the Hennessey building is more on the 'picturesque splendor' side of things. Inside, you'll find tasteful assortments of fresh produce, interesting pantry items, really fun deli and bakery choices, plus an eminently-browsible inventory of beer and wine. Go! See more..

    Wild Goose Lookout image
Because I am in Kalispell in the winter, getting to the east side of Glacier National Park is dicey and the window of getting to Rising Sun is small. On this trip everything worked in my favor and I was able to hike a bit down GTTS Rd. One of the highlights was the view from Wild Goose Island Lookout. It is spectacular to see this small island surrounded by the blue waters of the lake and the shear rock cliffs of the mountains. It is one of the first of many dramatic and stunning views as you start down through the park. See more..

The Helena Tour Train is an institution. At least this is the impression you get when you board the tour train. Of course it is a miniature version of a train and has no tracks, but it is such fun and a great learning experience. You drive around the town, which is still small by comparison with most other "cities" and you have the expert services of a trained guide who mentions everything you'd ever want to know about Helena history and present reality, all in the course of a little over an hour. If you are a visitor to the capital city, don't miss it! It is a classic!! See more..

I came across this while driving through Cut Bank. It is located on the corner of East Main Street and 5th Avenue S.E., toward the east end of town. It is set back a bit from the street. Its unique design caught my eye particularly the curved granite walls around the flag, designed to represent protecting the flag. Placed on the wall are over 300 plaques with the names, ranks, dates and service branch of each veteran, there is ample space for many more. Dedicated in May of 2014 it is dedicated to those Cut Bank residents, both dead and alive, who have served their country. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time while either staying or passing through. See more..
