Word of mouth was how we found out about this gem. Beautiful setting, beautiful lavender fields, unique shopping and very friendly owners. A bit off the beaten path but worth the drive. Don’t forget to pet the rescued donkeys. See more..
  2. 4.0 Rocky Point Nature Trail (4 reviews)
    - Short, easy, tranquil but still worth it

This is not an ‘epic’ hike on the scale of Grinnell Glacier Trail or some of others in the park. However, it also does not require an epic commitment in terms of planning or time. This trail is perfect if you’re in W. Glacier, it’s getting late, and you still want to get in another scenic hike in 2 hours or less. The tranquil views of the lake are pretty enough, the ‘beach’ does give a good opportunity to dip your legs in the lake. But, do round the bend at Rocky Point and you will come upon views of the more majestic, rugged mountains to the north. There is a spot on the rocks you can scramble/slide down to and stand as the waves lap at your feet. My shoes got soaked when a big one came in—it was worth it. See more..
  3. 4.5 Wild Goose Lookout (2 reviews)
    - Breathtaking view!

Because I am in Kalispell in the winter, getting to the east side of Glacier National Park is dicey and the window of getting to Rising Sun is small. On this trip everything worked in my favor and I was able to hike a bit down GTTS Rd. One of the highlights was the view from Wild Goose Island Lookout. It is spectacular to see this small island surrounded by the blue waters of the lake and the shear rock cliffs of the mountains. It is one of the first of many dramatic and stunning views as you start down through the park. See more..
  4. 4.0 Merry Widow Health Mine (1 review)
    - A lot of people swear by this place...
Spent 1-2 hours Mysterious Sites • Mines • Scenic Walking Areas
The Merry Widow Health Mine is an old mine which (people claim) cures a variety of medical conditions. It also has an RV park for people who stay multiple weeks, visiting the mine multiple times a day. The horozontal mine shaft is equipped with heat lamps, benches, tables, areas to soak your feet (in icy cold water)... sort of like an underground spa. What's the secret? I don't know: maybe it's the Radon gas, maybe the extreme quiet, something in the water. All I know is that I talked to a number of people there and they have all bought into the place. National Geographic and the NY Times have written about it. Cost is $5 per hour with long-term discounts. The RV park itself is a gem (pun): $32 for a full-hookup site on a river See more..
  5. 3.0 Goat Lick Overlook (1 review)
    - Bring binoculars to see goats

We randomly selected to turn the car on this point off Highway US-2, but had no idea if there would be anything to see. We did not see any sign on either side of the road indicating there was anything of note here. So, we were surprised to find a parking lot (not visible from the road) with numerous tourists who apparently knew something was here. So yes, this is the Goat Lick Overlook. We stopped for a bit to look at the site, and even saw one goat in the distance. A good site to have a pair of binoculars. If you are interested in visiting this location, helpful to dial it into your GPS, or otherwise have a good awareness via a map of exactly where you will be turning off the main road. See more..
  6. 5.0 Kootenai Rails To Trails (1 review)
    - Another great adventure at Lake Koocanusa

    Kootenai Rails To Trails image
I have made countless trips to Lake Koocanusa and they are always a great adventure. On this trip a friend turned me on to this great hike. While the total length of the hike is about 7 miles (11 km) we only did about 5 miles (8 km) of it. It begins at Riverside Park in Eureka and ends at Lake Court in Rexford. We picked up the trail around Douglas Hill and followed it along the lake and Tobacco River resting, then turning around at the old concrete pilings. The pilings are what's left of the bridge that crossed the Tobacco River at the lake into Rexford. The views are spectacular and it was amusing to watch the activity on the river. There are numerous paths down to the river for getting up close and personal. The trail is diverse changing from open to tree lined to cliff lined. There were many fun finds like left over railroad spikes from the old railroad. With stops this hike took about 2.5 hours. This is an easy hike, though there are a couple challenges depending on the lake and river depths. See more..
