I wasn't planning on a visit to the light house, but when I saw the door at the base was open, I was intrigued. I had forgotten that on weekends in the summer both the light house and the Keeper's House are open to the public. I was impressed with the steep circular stairs. A guide was posted outside and explained that the light house was constructed of granite from nearby Port Deposit. In fact he pointed to barges in the Bay that to this day transport granite from the Quarry. Upon my inquiry he also confirmed that the light house at Elk Neck Park in neighboring Cecil County was made with the same design and the same local granite. See more..

Note: Full access to the lighthouse is limited due to COVID-19. Please visit welcome.cbmm.org for details. Ascend the steps of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse and travel back in time to learn how 19th century lighthouse keepers tended their station in the middle of the Bay. Through this hands-on exhibit, visitors can climb the sea hatch, tend the huge lens, or stand watch on the lookout for ships or fog, experiencing firsthand the solitary, often heroic lives of Hooper Strait lighthouse keepers. The 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, now standing on Navy Point, was originally built in 1879 to light the way for boats passing through the shallow, dangerous shoals of Hooper Strait, a thoroughfare for boats bound from the Chesapeake Bay across Tangier Sound to Deal Island or places along the Nanticoke and Wicomico Rivers. As a “screwpile” lighthouse, it is built on special iron pilings which were tipped with a screw that could be turned into the muddy bottom for a depth of 10 feet or more. See more..

It was great to park the car in the street with row of houses, really elegant and charming houses with big church at one end and lighthouse on the other end. It was great view, and going up the lighthouse was great, they had miniature replica of the lighthouse in the lighthouse museum along with other cool stuff. What a nice surprise! We rented one half of the light house keeper's home. Though original, it is thoroughly updated with bathrooms on each floor, air conditioning, and modern kitchen. When rented, the property is closed to visitors. We had easy access to the beach and spent much time searching and finding sharks teeth. Shopping for food and necessities was a short, quick drive. We visited the Annmarie Sculpture Museum and Marine Museum, each a reasonable drive from the house. We watched tankers dock with the help of tugs offshore. We received quick responses via texts and phone calls for questions while there. We will be booking again. See more..

It had been over 40 years since I hiked to this lighthouse. Got there early (0730) and only ones on trail but forcasted to be a scorcher day. Told parking lot fills quickly. Very nice hike to lighthouse. Some of the trail was mowed area thru fields. Saw deer, butterflies, bald eagles and lots of Asian ladybugs that were annoying. Very lush and green. View of the Chesapeake spectacular. See more..
