After first reading about the Battle of Antietam way back in 1985 as a mere 10 y/o lad, it was so great to finally see the iconic bridge it up close and personal. I hasten to add that I had an amazing tour guide by the name of Justin Mayhue, a retired Fire Chief who personally knows/knew American Civil War authors such as Perry Jamieson (author of “Attack and Die”) and the late Joseph L. Harsh (“Taken at the Flood”). Justin has an incredible wealth of knowledge! See more..

    - Intimidating!

When I saw this bridge in the distance, I thought oh my gosh. No where to turn around so it’s full speed ahead. I rated it excellent because I was able to get across with no issues except new dents in my steering wheel from gripping it so hard. Whew! See more..
  3. 4.5 Loy's Station Covered Bridge (51 reviews)
    - covered bridge tour

    Loy's Station Covered Bridge image
This stately covered bridge has origins back as far as 1848 and, not surprisingly, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The name derives from the Western Maryland Railroad Station at Loys. A historic signboard near the bridge explains how Union Troops in 1863 marched along Old Frederick Road and passed through this bridge. The bridge has experienced several renovations, reinforcements, and rebuilding over the years but has retained some of the original timbers. For example, there is a concrete support pier halfway across its span of Owens Creek. Although we had set out to visit various historic sites in this part of Frederick County, we, in fact, wound up having a covered bridge tour as Loys was the third one we drove through on our journey. We are happy that the State makes an effort to preserve this part of history. See more..
  4. 4.0 Gilpin's Falls Covered Bridge (27 reviews)
    - Well maintained in a scenic setting

    Gilpin's Falls Covered Bridge image
After driving over many small and winding roads from Elkton, we did not expect to see the Gilpin Covered Bridge on a busy highway. Actually the bridge is set just off the highway and not open to traffic, which would likely destroy the well maintained classic structure in short notice. There is a good pull off that could hold maybe a dozen cars on the south side of the barn-red bridge. The bridge was originally built in 1860 and restored about 100 years later. One can walk through and see the basic wood beams and construction and look out the open windows at the pond below. See more..

Crossing this bridge remains one of my most unpleasant driving experiences. I had to pull over and gather my bearings after I drove across. See more..
  6. 4.5 Roddy Road Covered Bridge (25 reviews)
    - 160+ year old bridge is well maintained

    Roddy Road Covered Bridge image
Roddy Road Covered Bridge is part of Roddy Road Park near Thurmont. The Bridge is functional and well maintained by the county parks and recreation department, and like others around the county and state, painted barn red. The park itself is small and runs along the fast flowing creek. There are both pavilion and open air space for picnicking. The bridge, which crosses Owen's Creek east of Thurmont, was built between 1850 and 1860. We enjoyed seeing this bridge as one of several we visited in the county. See more..
  7. 4.0 Utica Covered Bridge (12 reviews)
    - Not the Original
    Bridges
    Utica Covered Bridge image
The original bridge spanned the Monocacy River, but an 1889 storm washed away 205 feet of it. The locals scavenged the pieces and reconstructed a 101-foot-long bridge at Fishing Creek. Some parts of the reconstructed bridge have timbers from the original bridge. The bridge is painted a deep red, the color chosen because red was cheap and available. It has a peaked roof and a series of triangle trusses. The bridge allows only one car to pass so be careful if you choose to walk. Bridges were covered to protect the interior from inclement weather. At first glance, all of the bridges (Utica, Loy’s Station and Roddy Road) we visited looked alike with the main difference being the structural design. See more..

  9. 4.0 Jericho Covered Bridge (6 reviews)
    - Possibly paranormal?
    Bridges
    Jericho Covered Bridge image
I’ve visited Jericho bridge many times in the past, the bridge dates back long ago so it has a lot of history, maybe even paranormal history bc one night in 2006 I took some pictures but only on one picture something unexplainable showed, there wasn’t any vehicles nearby so it wasn’t from a vehicles exhaust and nobody was smoking so I can’t explain it. It wasn’t a foggy night out either. I didn’t see anything with the naked eye in the moment, it was only on the camera in the one picture. Definitely strange and creepy. See more..

  11. 4.5 Loys Station Park (2 reviews)
    - Historic covered bridge with a role in the Civil War
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Loys Station Park image
Loys Station Covered Bridge is a major feature of Loys Station Park, part of the Frederick County Department of Parks and Recreation. We were impressed at finding several one-lane covered bridges in this part of the county, with Loys being a well-maintained example that is still in use along Old Frederick Road east of Thurmont in Rocky Ridge. The park itself is clean and cheerful, offering picnic areas both under a pavilion and in the open. There is a playground set for children and adequate parking. A historic sign board tells of the Union Army crossing this bridge after the battle of Gettysburg. The park has trails, and a very simple one enables one to get a close-up view of Owens Creek as it flows under the bridge. See more..
  12. 5.0 Nobles Mill Bridge (1 review)
    - Bridge and Mill of Centuries Past
    Bridges
    Nobles Mill Bridge image
Driving out of Darlington on Trappe Church Road one eventually comes to East Nobles Mill Road on the left. This narrow but paved road runs up to and along Deer Creek until it meets Nobles Mill Road itself at the Mill and Bridge. A mill existed on this site from the mid 18th Century. The current well maintained 4 1/2 story red sided building dates from around 1854. At the junction of East Nobles Mill and Nobles Mill Roads one can turn left and cross an historic wrought iron bridge dating from 1883 and according to the sign posted at each end, made by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton Ohio. The gravel road continues south to Harmony Church Road. A right turn on Nobles Mill Road brings one back to Trappe Church Road and on to Maryland Route 136. The bridge is relatively simple in design and offers unobstructed views of some small rapids in the creek. See more..
