The Bloodiest One Day Battle in American History: 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Antietam National Battlefield is located in western Maryland, 10 miles south of Hagerstown in Washington County. The best place to start your visit is at the park visitor center. We have brochures, museum exhibits, a film, a museum store, and park rangers and volunteers on duty to help you get oriented. This key Civil War battlefield marked the last push north by Confederates in 1864. Although it's seen as a confederate victory, this advance on Washington, D.C. was brought to a hault by the forces led by Major General Lew Wallace, U.S. Army. See more..

    - Just as good, if not better than any national park battlefield!

We did the State Park Ranger guided tour on the 152nd anniversary of the battle. I have already done all the ranger guided tours at the nearby national parks, so I wanted to see this other battlefield and do the tour. They do not do these tours often, so check the Maryland DNR's website for their schedule. Knowing that these tours normally do occur on the battle anniversary I planned my trip for that weekend. The tour is just as good as any I have ever done at a national park. In some respects is better than some of the national parks I have been to since this one is way less spoiled by development. This tour is nice if you have already been to or know about the battles at Antietam and Harper's Ferry since these particular battles at South Mountain fill in all the missing details. Note: Some of the smaller roads in and around this park are narrow and windy and hilly. Also, to get to the North Carolina monument you have to walk some through the woods to get to it. See more..
