4.5Billy Goat Trail(261 reviews) - best hike close in to DC Hiking Trails
The signs say don't park on the side of the road, but you may have to park on the side of the road, because this is a very popular trail. The access is across the street from the Old Angler's Inn Restaurant; there are a couple of parking lots but they fill up quickly. From there you are on the towpath of the C&O Canal, which is nice in its own right. There are multiple hiking trails off the towpath, including Billy Goat Trail sections A, B, and C. A is the best if you like rock scrambling. You will be hiking over rocks and you will need to use your hands at some points to get through. The river is just gorgeous here. There is a lot going on - tons of rocks to climb on and look at, moss, lichen, pools, vistas, forest. It's great for families once your kids are old enough to climb and hike safely. Great for photographers. Really just amazing in terms of natural beauty close to DC and the suburbs.See more..
5.0Great Allegheny Passage(248 reviews) - GAP and C&O bicycle touring adventure Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
The Great Allegheny Passage soars over valleys, snakes around mountains, and skirts alongside three rolling rivers on its nearly level path from Cumberland, Md. to Pittsburgh. Cyclists pass through the Cumberland Narrows, cross the Mason-Dixon Line, top the Eastern Continental Divide, wind their way through Pennsylvania’s breathtaking Laurel Highlands, journey through the region’s coke, coal, mining, and steel-making corridor, and end at Pittsburgh’s majestic Point State Park. Stunning views of waterfalls, gorges, river valleys, and farmland are everywhere, especially from outside the Big Savage Tunnel, from the sweeping Salisbury Viaduct, at both ends of the Pinkerton Tunnel, and via the Ohiopyle High and Low Bridges. Riders overlook the joining of rivers at Confluence, McKeesport, and Pittsburgh, and can explore adjoining peninsulas, state parks, hollows, wildflower stands, and forests on foot at many places along the trail.See more..

I just read the review where someone was disappointed that park staff collects the best of the large shark's teeth each morning before opening. Frankly I am amazed visitors are allowed to collect ANY shark's teeth because most parks state specifically that you are not allowed to remove natural material from the grounds. By collecting the best teeth for the visitor center the rangers assure the public has access to see them. The park belongs to all of us so, please, let's be considerate and not take it's treasures for ourselves only. Also, since the park service generously allows visitors to remove shark's teeth, only take a couple. That way other children and adults, for that matter, have the joy of finding them. Our 5 year old granddaughter has learned to take joy in finding treasures and leaving them behind to share with others. I think we can all do that.See more..
4.5Terrapin Nature Park(119 reviews) - Beautiful and close! Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
This award-winning 276-acre nature park features a 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail, which meanders through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands and sandy beaches. The trail provides a unique vantage point for viewing an incredible variety of waterfowl, wildlife and plant species. A gazebo and wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, located along the beach afford a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and park benches located along the trail provides a brief respite for the weary. The trail, which wanders over several ridges, across marshlands and through woodlands, features two observation blinds overlooking the tidal ponds. The trail connects to the County’s Cross Island Trail system. Nearby free parking for the Cross Island Trail system is available at Old Love Point Park. Portable toilets are available year round. 4.5Sligo Creek Park(96 reviews) - a local treasure Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Parks • Hiking Trails
This is one of those places tourists probably don't get to, but it's special enough for tourists and a fantastic resource for locals. There is a long walking/running/biking etc. trail next to the creek, set in the woods, as well as a parkway (sections of it close on Sundays so you can walk or ride on the road as well, which is fun). There a playgrounds and other recreational resources (grills, exercise stations, basketball courts, tennis courts) dotted along its length, a lot of picturesque bridges. You can see herons and deer. Sligo is a well-used and loved resource. There were recent improvements made to the drainage, etc. Great place to walk - a lot of really tall tulip trees. Beautiful in the autumn. See more..
4.5Ma and Pa Trail(89 reviews) - Get Outdoors! Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
The trail is a great place for walking and socializing with friends. You can also ride bikes, push strollers, jog. Me, I'm a walker. And one of the nicest parts, depending on how energetic you feel or how much time you have, you can walk half way or round trip from Annie's Playground all the way to Ellendale Street.See more..

5.0Maryland Heights Trail(47 reviews) - Awesome views of Harpers Ferry and Shenandoah Valley from the Overlook - especially during Autumn Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
A nice hike from Harpers Ferry Historical Park to the Maryland Heights Trailhead and then up to the Overlook which provides spectacular views of Harpers Ferry and surrounding Shenandoah Valley. The trail itself was nice especially at fall time with the different foliage colors on the trees. It is a 2 mile hike from Harpers Ferry to the Overlook, I would rate the difficulty as moderate up hill hike. Noticed others with their children, dogs and elderly, so would recommend the hike to the overlook if visiting Harpers Ferry. I visited the overlook about 5 years ago and was able to park near the trail head along Harpers Ferry Rd on the Maryland side. However, when I tried to park there this time around, the 2 parking locations are closed, so had to park at Harpers Ferry and then walk over the bridge to get to the trail head. All-in-all, it was a beautiful day for a hike in the fall.See more..
Went here for a walk, park near outlet. Walk about 5 miles to reach Virginia border and headed back. Trail is good for walk definitely recommended walking accompanied and during daytime. No fee to use great view of harbor, Potomac River.See more..
I have loved this trail since it opened. It's perfect for a walk or run - with or without your four-legged friends - almost any time of year. You get beautiful views, close-ups with amazing creatures like eagles and ospreys, and a healthy dose of sunshine. It's a long enough trail that you can spend plenty of time out there, but not so long that families with young kids can't enjoy. I've always felt relatively safe even alone, and generally cross paths with at least a handful of friendly folks.See more..
4.5Green Ridge State Forest(30 reviews) - Great place to explore Spent More than 3 hours State Parks • Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
I took my 4 year old camping with me last year at Green Ridge. It was crowded and all the numbered sites were taken so we did have to cruise around the Forrest for an hour and a half to find an open spot to camp. We ended up on the 4x4 road past all numbered sites. Despite not being a numbered site there was a fireplace and a platform to set up on. My 4 year old loved and I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to get outside and explore solo or with family and friends. See more..
My husband and I have ridden this trail three times in the past year. We have ridden twice from Happy Hills Campground in a westerly direction and once from Happy Hills easterly. We have enjoyed it either direction but I think westerly is our favorite. The last time we rode a little farther on the C & O towpath than we did the first time and found the short section of the trail after the tunnel. This took us to the old rail bridge over the Potomac. Nice shaded, flat trail. Very little traffic at the road crossings. Saw some deer and hope we will see a bear at some point. Lots of history to learn along the way.See more..
4.5Trolley Trail 9(22 reviews) - A short but fun walk along the former trolley line Hiking Trails
This is a relatively short walk (3.2 miles round trip) along the former #9 Trolley Line linking Ellicott City with Catonsville, Maryland. From Ellicott City to Catonsville, it is a gradual uphill climb. From Catonsville back to Ellicott City it is all downhill. Most of the route is covered by trees so it is an easy walk even during a hot sunny day. I suggest possibly bringing a picnic as there are several benches along the route where you can stop and enjoy a meal. This is a fun outing after visiting downtown Ellicott City or Catonsville, which also has a nice downtown area with lots of restaurants.See more..
3.0Cascade Lake(20 reviews) - Facts about Cascade Lake Hiking Trails
Some of these reviewers must be confused. Cascade Lake was drained in the summer of 2018 due to the dam failing. The property has since been sold to Coppermine. The person who thought it was a public lake is definitely confused. I’ve lived in Carroll County for 46 years and it was always privately held (translation: you paid an admission fee). But don’t feel bad - even the State of Maryland has it listed on VisitMaryland.org. Your tax dollars at work.See more..

The Patuxent Branch Trail links Lake Elkhorn to Savage Mill. Multiple parking areas exist along the 4.2 mile total length of the trail (although the final 0.7 miles between Vollenhausen Rd and Savage Mill is non-paved trail). The free parking area that directly is associated with this review (at Guilford road) is located not-quite in the center of the trail (it is 2 miles from Lake Elkhorn and 2.2 miles from Savage Mill). The major landmark at this parking area is the old rail bridge, which is well worth a few pictures! Overall, you can easily get 10-12 miles by doing an out and back in each direction and adding the 1.9 mile Lake Elkhorn loop. See more..
5.0C&O Canal Hike at Point of Rocks Boat Ramp(9 reviews) - A nice scenic and relaxing place for a walk or bike ride along the River and Canal Path Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
Park at the Train station/Canal parking lot and then make your way to the boat ramp for a view of the river and then follow the canal tow path for as long as you want. I walked to the next boat ramp (Lander) which is 2.7 miles and then back stopping along different paths which takes you to the river or the train tracks. I liked the Lander boat ramp better as there were more areas to relax along the river. There were several kayaks and boats in the river. Wanted to go to the top of the rocks for the Potomac Overlook, but the start of the trail was too muddy and slippery, will give it a try next time.See more..

4.5Western Maryland Rail Trail(5 reviews) - Nice Bike Trail Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails Paved and relatively flat bike path. Shaded most of the time, and places to stop for lunch or use the bathroom (portapotties). Our group of nine took the path west from Hancock, it is 15 miles one way. A doable trek for inexperienced bikers like ourselves. Bring dollar bills, one or two houses that line the path may have coolers stocked with ice cold water for your to purchase.See more..
5.0Marshy Point Nature Center(5 reviews) - Beautiful Park on a Beautiful Spring Day Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails
Marshy Point is an easy to reach and well maintained park and nature education center. There are walks and trails and plenty of picnic tables. There are pens for owls and turkeys, and nesting for eagles out on the water. The spring weather brought a little green to the trees, which contrasted with the blue of the nearby waters, seen through them. A great place to spend a sunny afternoon.See more..

If you like to bike and want to explore Kent Island area, consider using this trail. The trail starts from Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach (with plenty of parking spaces) and ends at goes the fishing pier in Romancoke. The trail will take you through woodland and agriculture land alongside Rt. 8, and to the pier for fishing if you wish. There are also parking at the pier, but will cost you 10 $ during the season (mainly for fishing people). This is the best way to explore the southern part of the Island.See more..
This warm afternoon was the perfect time for a walk along the Greenway trail. A welcoming committee of several dozen vultures did not discourage the many walkers. The old railway track between the week maintained path and the river is visible most of the way. On the other side is a steep ridge with rocky outcroppings. Families were walking, biking, fishing, and accompanying dogs on a leash. Everyone was in a cheerful mood and greeted each other in passing. Some spring wild flowers were showing. The big treat were the bald eagles. I was lucky to see one perched patiently in a tree as if waiting for me to take his photo. There is adequate parking. The signs/displays about local fish, birds etc. were a bit worn and hard to read. I probably covered a third of the trail before turning back to meet a lunch appointment, so will definitely need to return as the seasons change.See more..
The trail runs 17 miles from the Chesapeake to the Delaware River. The pavement is good, and even excellent on a new section near Delaware City where they moved the trail away from the water. One of our favorites anywhere!See more..
4.0Wye Island Natural(2 reviews) - Nice 6+ mile walk - bring shoes for mud Hiking Trails
What a beautiful park. It has lots of walking trails and hardly a soul in sight. Lots of nice scenery and most of all serenity! 4.0Old National Pike Park(2 reviews) - Nice Local Park Saturday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Parks • Hiking Trails • Playgrounds Located on Route 40 between New Market and Mt.Airy, Old National Pike Park turned out to be a pleasant surprise on a trip with our granddaughter. Driving up a hill to the park you get a nice view of the property and the many playgrounds and a well manicured baseball field. There are also 4 multipurpose fields, picnic tables, grills, shelters, volleyball nets, walking trails and clean restrooms/spot a pots. 4.5South Mountain State Park(2 reviews) - Exceptional Rranger Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails Did you ever have a Ranger (Maryland Park Service) go so far out of their way to satisfy an inquisitive traveler that she would take time from her day to leave the Ranger station, show you the way up the mountain, open the closed Visitors Center, shut off the alarm, put the lights and exhibits on and then tell you to take your time visiting the information. Her name was Sarah R. and she did that for me. Also the view from the Washington Monument at South Mountain and the history of the locale was wonderful.See more..
5.0Jack Creek Park(1 review) - Bald eagles, turtles and water Spent 1-2 hours Beaches • Parks • Hiking Trails
Great park for a quick hike rewarded with a beautiful view of the Chesapeake Bay. A lot of bald eagles, blue herons, deep, wildflowers and even a turtle. If it has rained recently, boots are a good idea. Not sure I would come during mosquito season and I'm sure the ticks would be bad, so plan accordingly.See more..
4.0Loch Lynn Heights Wetlands(1 review) - Neat wetlands with trails and boardwalks Spent < 1 hour Hiking Trails I discovered this new park because of several geocaches that have been placed here. 5.0Cromwell Valley Park(1 review) - Well maintained trails to view forests, wildlife and historic structures Hiking Trails
Cromwell Valley Park is a well kept combination of forest trails and historic farm lands situated along Cromwell Bridge Road nestled between Minebank Run and a wooded ridge that both lead toward the Big Gunpowder River. The stately stone Sherwood House serves as park officer/headquarters. Maps are available to guide visitors along the trails and to the sites. I was particularly interested in seeing the 19th Century lime kilns, as a family friend had helped with their restoration. The three kilns were impressive. Wildlife and wild flowers abound. Many families were out enjoying our first semi-cool but sunny day in several weeks.See more..
4.0Morgan Run Loop(1 review) - Winter Hike Hiking Trails Pretty canyon. A bit of hiking and a bit of scrambling up some rocks. Heavenly Waters is actually a stream just northwest of Bel Air on Tollgate Road that feeds into the Bush River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. The park is located on the west side of the road and includes trails, an equestrian center and hosts the annual Harford County Farm Fair. A big sign is up displaying the hope that we will actually have a fair in July 2021. The east side of the road contains part of the extensive MA and PA Railroad trail that follows the old route through beautiful forests from Fallston to Forest Hill (eventually). The park is a great place for picnics and hiking, and there is plenty of parking. See more..
