4.0Hokkaido Jingu(1.194 reviews) - Impressive Shrine in a snowy landscape! Friday: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
Set in Maruyama Park and approached along the Cherry Tree Boulevard from the 2nd Shrine Gate, the Hokkaido Jingu Shinto Shrine is probably impressive whatever season you choose to visit. Visiting in January when blanketed by snow, however, seems to elevate it to something extra-special. Established in 1869, the centrepiece of the Main Shrine is an impressive A-framed building whose gold embellishments positively sparkle on a bright Winter's day. I was particularly fascinated by the wooden frame with wires that devotees tied their "wishes"/prayers around. I rounded off my visit to this impressive Shrine by taking a break at the attractive Coffee Shop that sells hand-made cookies near the entrance to the Main Shrine, then walking back towards the Subway Station through the snow covered Park. Most enjoyable!See more..
4.0Trappistine Monasteries(565 reviews) - Trappistine Convent which showcase the life in a monasteries Friday: 8:20 AM - 4:30 PM Religious Sites
it's very far from Hakodate central & requires a change to bus frm the last tram station + some walking then only you'll reach since this is a monasteries where they live in seclusions. I like this place for it's idea and some how for a person like me that couldn't live without my mobile phone & computer for even a day, I respect these ppl dat dedicated their whole life & time in seclusions and religion works. The monasteries is not open for view since they're livin in seclusions (a short reminder this is more to a religion site so I do not recommend for visitors that expect to see more things or have fun). Visitors can only view the outside of the building, the small church & statues in the open garden & do buy their home made butter candy & yummy cakes as support. The side exhibition near their shop showcase their daily life routine as wellSee more..
4.0Hakodate Orthodox Church(474 reviews) - Russian Orthodox Church Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Beautiful architecture built in 1860, this is accessible from the Daikan Zaka slope. This church was originally built as a chapel attached to the first Russian Consulate. The original church was destroyed by the Great Fire of Hakodate in 1907 and rebuilt in 1916. See more..
4.0Motomachi Catholic Church(257 reviews) - footsteps in wintry Hokkaido Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
almost 100 years old, the church is extremely well kept. little wonder and just little worthwhile trouble to swop winter boots for Japanese slippers at the inner door the colours of the altar and other painted woodwork look as authentic and inspiring as one would see in Tirol where they were crafted. was meaningful to learn of the biblical and missionary who’s who from the brochure (in English and Japanese) and see Melchizedek, Archangel Michael & St Francis Xavier by the Crucifix while mass was in Japanese, the coordinators made it a point to introduce and welcome us foreigners. warm Catholic and warm Hokkaido hospitality on a winter SundaySee more..
4.0Trappist Monasteries(137 reviews) - Cherry Blossom in Hokkaido 2018_4 Religious Sites
While it is a monastery, the thing it impresses me most is the ice-cream they sell there. It is the best ice-cream I have taken in Japan. Note that this is Hokkaido and all ice-creams sold there are of very high quality. The fact that this monastery' s ice-cream can stand out among all is worth all the effort getting there. At the back of the monastery, you can hike uphill and the scenery there is very nice and mind-soothing. We did not manage to see the cherry blossom as we went there too early but I can imagine it will be a great picture if they blossom. Another thing to say is the cypress trees on both sides of the road leading to the monastery, it reminds me my trip to Tuscany last year. This row of cypress trees are more beautiful. See more..
3.5Hokumon Shrine(73 reviews) - Shinto Shrine, start of a walking trail Religious Sites
This is a pretty small shrine. The large trees running through the center are all cherry trees, making it very beautiful in spring. It does have one special point, though: It is the start of the walking trail up to Wakkanai Park. You can begin the trail by walking out and up behind the shrine.See more..
This place is crowded very much for New Year holidays. Because there is this Shinto shrine in the foot of Mount Hakodate, you must climb the stairs having a long it. The person that it is hard to climb the stairs will go by a rent-a-car and a taxi. I can easily go up to the top by using the car. I bought a lucky charm.I hope that it's good. Cherry blossoms bloom and seem to be a very beautiful place in spring.See more..

4.0Raiun Shrine(42 reviews) - Small shrine in a beautiful little park Religious Sites
We visited this shrine as we'd heard you could collect fresh water and it was supposed to bring good fortune! There were some beautiful cherry blossom trees and it was very easy to access the spring water. I don't know about good fortune, but the water was perfect for drinking. You may bring your own bottles and fill them up. It was very quiet and peaceful on the day we visited, perhaps because it was tucked away from the main roads.See more..
Went on 8th june. Followed the map code and ended up at Aoba Park. The direction signage did not show Chitose Shrine at all! Fortunately our reliable google map did the job for us and led us through the park to the shrine via 10min walk. The air was crisp and fresh. It was a lovely park. We were surprised that the shrine was not open. It looked neglected, not a single soul in sight. There wasnt anything we could do, hence just hastily took a few pic at the entrance of the shrine and left. What a disappointment.See more..

4.0Kushiro Itsukushima Shrine(29 reviews) - Typical small shrine Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites
The city circular tour bus (starting from near where our cruise ship docked) stopped off at this shrine for enough time to walk up and have a brief look. We were given the opportunity to stop off and wait for the next bus an hour later, but frankly after seeing bigger shrines in Kyoto this would not have justified a full hour. In fairness, it’s in an attractive location and the shrine is worth a look if you are nearby, anyway.See more..
The Tori Gate opposite the tourist centre (old railway station - wifi hotspot) suggests there's something up the long flight of steps beyond. There is - it's another flight of steps. It's worth the climb as the temple and stone lanterns at the top are beautiful. The views over the bay are great.See more..
4.5Zenkoji Temple(23 reviews) - Serene, beautiful temple worth visiting Friday: 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM Religious Sites
I reckon that foreign visitors to Hokkaido may not usually seek historic temples. But I heartily recommend visiting this place, if you happen to be in the vicinity. It's about 10 min by car from Toyako Onsen area, along the coastal highway route #37. The temple has approx 400 years of history, and it was one of the three official temples in Hokkaido during medieval Edo era. The main temple with thatched roof was built about 200 years ago, but its tatami rooms and wooden corridors are incredibly well-kept. And unlike many of Buddhist temples here, everyone is welcome to look inside, and admission is free. The garden is also very beautiful, with many cherry trees, hence very popular with visitors during the blossom in May. An old cherry tree, planted by the chief priest 200 years ago, grows out of a crack in a rock, and is very famous (it's called "Ishiwari-zakura"). The temple also has an interesting treasury but it is open only by advanced reservation (admission JPY200 p.p).See more..

3.5Ryuunin(20 reviews) - Cultural Property: Built 1625 Religious Sites
Very old temple from the Edo Era, built in 1625 by the Soto sect. It consists of the main hall, the bell tower, a beautiful front gate, a storehouse & other (some newer) buildings that are collectively designated as national important cultural property. It is especially important because it is the only temple in Matsumae to survive the Boshin War (Battle of Hakodate). There is an old cherry tree of Ezo Kasumi Sakura on the grounds, but it is in full bloom after Golden Week. It is possible in season to see white dandelion, which are rare in Hokkaido (and the rest of Japan too!).See more..
See more..
3.5Onibokora(19 reviews) - Watch for traffic crossing to this Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
The two large demons remind me of something I'd see in Jellystone Park - kind of kitsch but kind of cool too. The shrine holds an Edo-era statue that seems diminished by its gaudier companions. It's probably obligatory to get a photo next to one.See more..
4.0Kitami Shrine(15 reviews) - New Year's day experience Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
We visited on New Years day. We offered our donations to the shrine and followed the lead of those in front of us in the line. There were a lot of people but it added to the excitement of our experience. There were some stalls selling fortunes and trinkets, all in Japanese so we got ours and then asked someone's help translating later. Nice New Year's day activity, but if you do go on New Years be prepared to park far away as its busy. See more..
4.0Rausu Shrine(14 reviews) - Quiet place Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites

4.0Ebetsu Shrine(13 reviews) - Beautiful place Religious Sites
If you happen to find yourself in Iwamizawa this is a great shrine to visit. There are no English signs, but Google translate will do you right I'd you're curious about anything. It's quiet, tranquil, and a beautiful spot to go around dusk. If you want to pray, just double check the etiquette/process before you visit. See more..
4.5Ota Shrine(12 reviews) - 正式名は太田神社 Spent 2-3 hours Religious Sites
This shrine is Ota Jinja Shrine. Not Otasan Shrine. The name written in Japanese atthe entrance is mistaken. Be careful. Ota Jinja Shrine is formed with Pray house and the main house. The Shrine whch is located by the sea is just pray house. But if you hope to get the main house, you should prepare to mountain trail. The way to the main house is quite severy as you see my pics. Ask information to the town hall before getting there. See more..
4.0Katta Shrine(12 reviews) - Spend a good 10-15 minutes or so here Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
Since there are many shrines throughout Hokkaido (not to mention Japan).. this might come out as "another shrine" in Noboribetsu area. Walking up the stairs is required to reach this quiet shrine... and the view was very good especially during winter where the snow covered this area!! Ring the bell in front of the shrine for good luckSee more..
4.0Kiko-in Temple(10 reviews) - Warm welcome at the temple Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
Yes - biggest wooden Buddha north of Tokyo. Yes - gorgeous Jodo sect temple inside a deceptively simple exterior. But REALLY go for the current Chief Priest Narita-san. If you are lucky enough to visit when he is working and has time - you are in for a treat because he is a lively, funny, wonderful interpreter of all things Buddhist and particularly the temple in his charge. He'll demonstrate the drum and chime sounding...show you the healing Buddha with the detached hand that you touch to your afflicted body part and much much more. He speaks English, but even more than that - he is just one of life's shining individuals. You'll feel invigorated just meeting him :-)See more..
