    The Asahikawa Winter Festival, held in the city of Asahikawa, home of the famous Asahiyama Zoo, has been held since 1960 and is one of the biggest winter events in Hokkaido. The main venue is located on the banks of the grand Ishikari River, best known for its giant snow sculptures. The main snow sculpture in 1987, called "Gulliver's Castle," even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records (updated in 1994 to a sculpture of World Heritage site, Hwaseong Fortress).     First proposed and lead by Hokkaido-born sculptor Toshihiro Takenaka in 1976, the Sounkyo Hot Spring Ice Fall Festival is an ice festival held from late January through the middle of March. Ice sculptures based on themes such as naturally sculpted objects and manmade structures are spread out over the vast course of the Ishikari River, including even shrines sculpted from ice. The panoramic view from the 15-meter ice observation platform is particularly splendid, and when the sun sets, viewers are overcome by a fantastical landscape illuminated with rainbow colored lights.     Boasting extraordinarily clear waters, Lake Shikotsu is known as the northernmost lake in Japan which does not freeze over in winter. The various art objects sparkle a frozen blue during the daytime, and are illuminated in an array of colors at night.     This festival is held every year from late April to late May in Matsumae Park, selected as one of the 100 best places to view cherry blossoms. Around 10,000 trees in 250 varieties with blossoms in various colors and shapes bloom at different times during the cherry blossom season. These cherry trees are said to have originated from many varieties brought to Matsumae's prosperous castle town from Edo and Kyoto, and they were protected and cultivated through the efforts of the local people in the years that followed.     This summer festival is held in Furano, famous for its lavender fields and as the setting of the TV drama, Kita no kuni kara (From the North Country). The Hokkaido Heso Festival began based on the idea that "the sign marking the center of the body is the navel (heso)," an extension of a concept in Furano's Citizen's Charter established in 1969, which stated, "We are the citizens of Furano, which stands as a sign marking the center of Hokkaido." One of the highlights is the Heso Odori, a dance performed by dancers with faces painted on their torsos. In the early days of the festival there were not enough dancers, but in recent years it has become a huge event with as many as 4,000 dancers performing for 70,000 spectators. The main attraction is the parade of yotaka andon lanterns, featuring lanterns of various sizes, with the largest being 7mx12mx3m. Yotaka andon are colorful, glorious lanterns made with bamboo in the shapes of dragons, carriages, and other forms, set up on pedestals, with light bulbs shining through glued and waxed Japanese paper.
