4.0Oyunuma(175 reviews) - Deers grazed near the crater lake Spent < 1 hour Hot Springs & Geysers
I was amazed to see a few deers grazing next to the sizzling hot water. Really beautiful. The trail to the lake could get slippery and need a good pair of sneakers. Definitely not for someone has ankle problems. Should not try if it is raining. See more..

4.5Karamatsu no Yu(31 reviews) - Secluded stream-side hot spring Hot Springs & Geysers
This is a wonderful secluded hot spring hidden in the mountains between Asharo village and Lake Akan. It is built right by a creek where the hot water bubbles out of the ground. There are two baths, one mixed and one for women or couples. There is no admission fee and the hot spring is maintained by locals. It is in the shade even at noon, so it is a nice place for a daytime soak. To get to it drive on Route 150 from Asharo, turn left on Route 505, pass the Hot Spring Lodge Daiichi and as soon as you pass the Shin Karamatsu bridge, turn left on ranchway 41, another left when it deadends, and then left after you cross the creek. This is a great place for a romantic soak. Visited 9/22/2017.See more..
3.5Taisho Jigoku(20 reviews) - Close to the foot baths Spent < 1 hour Hot Springs & Geysers
If you have walked to this place then you do not have further to walk to the natural foot baths. In contrast to the other areas this pool is almost black due to the boiling mud in it. You are looking down on it from an elevated position. If you visit Jigokudani then I would highly recommend walking all the trails as I did and experiencing all this place has to offer as it is quite unique and interesting.See more..
3.5Ikenoyu(14 reviews) - Closed now Spent < 1 hour Hot Springs & Geysers
Unfortunately this outdoor bath is closed at the moment. It looks like it has been inundated with lake water... perhaps after the August Typoon. I imagine once the water has subsided (perhaps next year) it might open again.See more..
4.5Shikanoyu(13 reviews) - Hidden hot spring can be inundated if river rises Hot Springs & Geysers
Located at the end of a long road and beyond the campground in the southeastern corner of Daizetsusan National Park, Shikanoyu is a mixed-bathing riverside rotenburo that is popular with the nature crowd and is known throughout Japan. Admission is free. Parking is on the south end of the campground, after which you must walk through the campground to find the onsen. At times there is a set of boxes beside the path a bit above the hot spring where you can change clothes. We went just after a big rain, and there was no changing place and the had risen over the path to the onsen and had cooled off the water. We didn't enter and left this onsen for a later encounter. The location looks ideal with plenty of shade during hot summer days. The road to the hot spring may be closed during winter snowfall. Visited 9/19/2017.See more..
4.0Kuma no Yu Open Air Bath(10 reviews) - My favorite wild outdoor onsen Spent < 1 hour Hot Springs & Geysers
Drive up the hill from the sea. Park your car. Take your towel and walk up to the hot spring bath dug into a rock by the gushing mountain stream. No soap allowed. If too hot add cold water from the hose pipe alongside. Enjoy! Don't forget to take a deep breath and say thanks to mother earth for her gifts.See more..
