    Kentucky Horse Park image
The only park of its kind in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, educational theme park and equine competition facility dedicated to man's relationship with the horse. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of the Kentucky's famous Bluegrass region, the park is THE place to get close to horses! Featuring dozens of breeds of horse at work and at play, the park showcases the horse in daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback and pony rides, and an array of horse shows and special events throughout the year. The park's International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is the world's largest equestrian museum. Offering both the experienced horseman and novice an opportunity to explore the many facets of humanity's relationship with the horse, the museum is dedicated to all breeds and disciplines of horse and covers some 50-million years of equine history. State-of-the-art technology complements rare artifacts and scholarly research to present a unique, educational, museum experience for all ages. The American Saddlebred Museum, the Showplace for Saddlebreds, celebrates Kentucky's first native breed of horse. The museum features interactive exhibits and a movie. With the park's own tourist activities and the numerous additional horse shows that take place in the equine competition facilities throughout the year, there can be a fair amount of walking involved, depending on visitor interest level. Comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended, appropriate for Kentucky's seasonal weather. Dogs and other pets are permitted on park grounds, as long as they are on a leash or in an approved carrier, although they may not be permitted in some buildings. See more..

    - Remarkable old fort

    Fort Boonesborough State Park image
I truly enjoyed this stop, even though I thought I was at the Civil War fort initially. I didn't even know this place existed but so glad I came. The fort itself is a replica built in the 1970s, but it is powerful and impactful with living actors who tell the stories of the fort as well as how life was. The price of admission is cheap and there is a neat little shop that offers gifts and trinkets made on site. See more..

  7. 4.5 Carter Caves State Resort Park (194 reviews)
    - Great Place to Stay
Monday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM State Parks
Carter Caves State Resort Park image
Carter Caves is not all that modern. Don't get me wrong, the resort is modern, but the activities are a throw back to the past still. Swimming pool (used to have a beach on the lake but that was eliminated), miniature golf, and camping are just a few activities. But in addition, there are caves with public tours, and hiking to bridges/arches. The 3 Bridge hike is pretty tough but there are some shorter, more level hikes to natural bridge and Shangri La. Surprisingly, there used to be a golf course and they eliminated that also. So this is not a typical resort. See more..

  10. 4.0 Jenny Wiley State Resort Park (140 reviews)
    - Great family campground
    State Parks
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park image
I've been camping at Jenny Wiley since I was a child and it is still one of my favorite places to visit. The campground and bathrooms are very clean and well taken care of. The campground offers many free or very cheap activities for kids right in the park, including free ice cream socials, snake and wildlife shows, arts and crafts, games and much more. Friday and Saturday nights they have line dancing in the park. The whole family can come out and learn the steps and dance all evening. Located in the park, a short drive from the campground is Jenny Wiley Theatre. Each season they have new great musicals and shows. The costuming and scenery for each show is amazing. Over the years I've seen the Wizard of Oz, Annie, Beauty and the Beast and many more and they were all well worth the small amount it costs to go to the shows. There is also a lodge for those who don't like to camp. See more..
  11. 4.5 Audubon State Park (121 reviews)
    - Let's Hike!
    State Parks
    Audubon State Park image
We loved this park for the many hiking trails - woods, hills, and even a backwoods lake! Park at the visitor center and pick up a trail map in the open archway (bathrooms available there too). Trails can be accessed from the parking area, also from the upper parking area near the museum. After a morning of hiking, we drove up into the park and found a nice spot to have a picnic lunch, by Scenic Lake (no, not the same lake that we hiked to - this one is bigger.) After lunch, we drove out of the main part of the park and over to their wetland area...another nice walk there! There's lots more to this park than we were able to take in on this visit. See more..

Spent More than 3 hours State Parks • Biking Trails
General Butler State Resort Park image
General Butler State Resort Park is a beautiful park! They have camping available, and their is a lodge hosting a the Two Rivers Restaurant, and an place to view overlook the area. There used to be a golf course, but that is no longer operating, and it seems like it's really be gone downhill from a visit there 4 years ago. Almost always saw deer somewhere in the park. There's paddle boats available though we didn't use them and there's a ramp/deck you can access from the road to go fishing. Beautiful views! This morning there was a haze over the water and it just looked so beautiful! I heard there's a new manager and looking forward to see how she will improve the park to bring it back to life! Always see people coming and going...whether just for a ride through the park, or up to the lodge, or the campgrounds. See more..

    - Beautiful large park with a great campground
    State Parks
    Taylorsville Lake State Park image
We stayed overnight in a tent in the RV campground last weekend. The campground looks very nice. We stayed in site #1 which was small, but had a small fire ring and picnic table. It was big enough for our tent. It would have been a little small for the pop up, but probably would have fit. Our site was directly next to the playground and directly across street from the bathrooms. Would be a great site if you have little ones. You could sit at your site and watch them with no problem on playground. The site was gravel (small gravel). The showers looked fairly new and were roomy. Bathrooms had soap for hand washing and a hand dryer and a trash can. Plenty of hot water. The ladies that checked us in at the gate were very nice and offered us some board games to borrow. We bought 3 tiny bundles of firewood for $6 each. Whew. She said they had ice you could purchase also. There was also an equestrian campground that was separate and looked really nice. They had plenty of room for the campers and the horses. There are horse trails but we didn't check them out. We drove down to the boat ramp to look at the lake and it looked nice. We enjoyed this park. See more..
  17. 4.0 Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park (50 reviews)
    - Relaxing Time
    State Parks
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park image
Sitting in the screened in porch watching the lake. There was a beaver we watched a lot. My husband and I came here to relax and definitely did. The lake is really pretty. Rented a paddle boat for an hour and enjoyed going around the lake in it. The restaurant is just okay. I have celiac so there was nothing I could eat there. The breakfast is a continental breakfast and one morning they had Frosted Flakes I could eat. The cabin with the lake view was great. Not as nice as say a cabin in Gatlinburg but I would definitely stay again. We made good use of the grill. Air conditioning worked well and the beds and furniture were comfortable. Bring your own paper towels though. The cable wasn’t working due to being cut by a fallen tree but we didn’t mind. If you can’t do ALOT of steps don’t rent a cabin with a lake view. There were 80 steps down to the cabin from where you have to park. Overall a great state park for relaxation i See more..

  22. 3.5 Kincaid Lake State Park (32 reviews)
    - Camping
    State Parks • Parks
    Kincaid Lake State Park image
I understand that the sites we stayed on we're primitive. But not to take care of the lots and make them level for tents is ridiculous. We had 3 lots rented 54 55 and 56 and none of them were suitable for tents. It wouldn't take 30 minutes with a bobcat to fix a level spot for a tent to set up. But that's why we don't go to a lot of state parks because they could care less about the campers. The lake was beautiful and the view was beautiful but out first time at kincaid lake was nothing to brag about. PS you don't have to wait until memorial day to open up miniature golf especially when I talked to several people who were wanting to do it. See more..
  23. 3.5 Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site (27 reviews)
    - Off the path
Monday: Spent 1-2 hours State Parks • Hiking Trails
Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site image
This isnt a rainy day activity and yet we went on a day that it was raining. We put up umbrellas and just went. It wasnt storming which was good because we drove through a heck of one coming in. But the site has a museum (one of the mounds they dug up) and then three other mounds plus a hiking trail we did the museum and the mounds due to the rain we didnt go out on the trail. This was a interesting stop and was glad we did it as our first day. They have a small area in the visitor center with some pottery and then you have a place to picnic in the back which was covered they have parking and they do have some interesting hours but if you check the website for them they have all of that listed. We did drive down some winding roads to get the location it does sit off the beaten path which was fine with the weather and location we had it to ourselves. See more..
