    - Highly Educational and Totally Serene!

    Cedar Sink Trail image
Probably one of the best trails south of the Green River! The trail starts off with a quick descent, but then it is rather rolling. Eventually, you come to the humongous sink where the underground river pops out for a bit. So beautiful and totally serene. You feel as if you are in another world! There are lots of steps down and then lots of steps up on the other side of the sink. I had to stop several times to catch my breath! But it was totally worth it. I visited in February and loved it, but can imagine that it is even much prettier in the spring and fall, and also more crowded. I loved having the place to myself! A porta potty is located at the trailhead. I highly recommend that a visit to Turnhole Bend Nature Trail just down the road a bit where you can see where this underground river joins the Green River. We were staying near the trail at the Marriott on Newtown Pike. Only mistake we made was going into the city instead of heading out to the horse farms. It was very pretty until we got close to the Y, and then we realized we went the wrong way. We ended up going back and going the correct way but ran out of time. Definitely recommend this trail. What a treasure for the city and for the visitors! See more..

  5. 5.0 Rock Bridge Trail #207 (51 reviews)
    - Fun Easy Hike

    Rock Bridge Trail #207 image
Wonderful stop on the scenic drive. The loop has a few steps but is easy. 1.5 miles long there is a great stop half way. You can see the rock bridge and teens will love to climb on this. Also just beside this is Creation falls. A fun little water fall that you can stand in the water above or play in the water below. There is a large sandy area for kids to play. If I had know I would have brought a sand pail for my little one. You walk through the woods beside the stream to reach these and it was a relaxing beautiful walk. A must stop if doing the Red River Gorge Scenic Drive. See more..
  6. 3.5 Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site (27 reviews)
    - Off the path
Tuesday: Spent 1-2 hours State Parks • Hiking Trails
Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site image
This isnt a rainy day activity and yet we went on a day that it was raining. We put up umbrellas and just went. It wasnt storming which was good because we drove through a heck of one coming in. But the site has a museum (one of the mounds they dug up) and then three other mounds plus a hiking trail we did the museum and the mounds due to the rain we didnt go out on the trail. This was a interesting stop and was glad we did it as our first day. They have a small area in the visitor center with some pottery and then you have a place to picnic in the back which was covered they have parking and they do have some interesting hours but if you check the website for them they have all of that listed. We did drive down some winding roads to get the location it does sit off the beaten path which was fine with the weather and location we had it to ourselves. See more..
  7. 4.5 Shanty Hollow Lake Hiking Trail (23 reviews)

Shanty Hollow Lake Hiking Trail image
This is a nice well wooded area with a water fall at the end if it has not been really dry. The lake is non-wake so fun to paddle and enjoy nature. The trail requires some walking skill and you will cross over downed trees and slippery rocks but the end is a really nice place. Walking shoes are needed and small children will find it hard to do. 8. 5.0 Auxier Ridge Trail #204 (14 reviews)
    - Awesome views, a must-do hike!

    Auxier Ridge Trail #204 image
We did the double arch trail, then backtracked to the main trail which we took to courthouse rock and then continuing on with the loop to the car. I recommend going early and on a weekday, we went on a Friday and the parking lot was pretty full by the time we were finished around 12:30. The views were even better than we expected, and the trails were very quiet until the trek from courthouse to the car. We could even see double arch from a lookout south of courthouse rock which was fun! Well worth it. We aren’t the most ambitious hikers so I’d say moderate trail. Total hiking time not including breaks was probably 2 hours 45 mins. See more..
  9. 4.5 Sky Bridge Trail (14 reviews)

    Sky Bridge Trail image
Skybridge is a must-see while at the Red River Gorge. It’s a very popular attraction. The first time we were in the area it was crawling with people. We couldn’t even find a place to park. The next time, we went back early on a Sunday morning in November and had the place all to ourselves. It was heavenly. The path to Skybridge is paved and accessible for people with disabilities. We walked over the bridge and then climbed down under it. The views were spectacular. See more..

  12. 4.5 Pinnacle Overlook (7 reviews)
    - Best Views in Cumberland Gap National Historic Park
    Hiking Trails
    Pinnacle Overlook image
While you come to the park to see the Gap Daniel Boone crossed with settlers to the west, on the mountain just north of the Gap is the best views of the Tri-state area with good views of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The parking lot is in Kentucky but a short walk takes you to a large viewing platform in Virginia that provides amazing views. The Views over Middlesboro, KY and Cumberland Gap, TN are spectacular. The CGNHP gives you the opportunity to hike to the overlook from the valley floor or you can drive up the mountain which we did. On the ride up we saw deer and were able to get some pictures. However, it is the view here that is incredible and the reason for a Must See in CGNHP. See the pictures but even they will not do it justice. See more..

Took boys and their friends kayaking while my husband and I canoed leisurely down the river on a Tuesday at 3:00 in the afternoon. Arrived at the cabins, Mike took us up the river, shared some local tales in the brief trip in a "vintage" van and dropped us off for our adventure. Excellent family time and made summer memories! 17. 4.5 Anchorage Trail (3 reviews)
    - Excellent Safe Place For Walking
Tuesday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Anchorage Trail image
I took the trail for the first time today and wow was I impressed. It is very neatly maintained and just beautiful. Anchorage did a wonderful job of carving out this magnificent place right in the middle of their city. The trail can be used for walking or bikes and has markers to tell you the distance you've traveled. It is also used as a dog walk and there are bag stations along the trail for people to use. They seem to let all the tress, plants and shrubs grow in their natural state which sets this park apart from others. This is a great place to get away from it all and it makes you feel like you are in the country. See more..

We came to this park for a hike and were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful scenery. Drive all the way to the back to park to where the trails are. We took our 5 boys for a short hike (the youngest was 4) and they all enjoyed it. Hilly, wooded and steep ravines. Bathrooms were available at the picnic pavilion. A nice park for a short morning hike. See more..

Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge image
This May my wife and I were able to travel here and we enjoyed both the nice weather and the beauty of the refuge. This NWR is located in the western tip of Kentucky near the town of Benton. It was established as one of the largest remaining bottomland hardwood forests in the region. We very much enjoyed driving the interpretive auto tour and learning about the refuge. We walked some trails and enjoyed interacting with the refuge staff at the visitor center. The refuge also offers fishing, hunting and we utilized the observation deck for photographic opportunities. Come and bring your family (especially children), binoculars, camera and see what this region of Kentucky has to offer. This is a beautiful refuge and is certainly filled with an abundance of wildlife. See more..
  22. 5.0 Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve (2 reviews)
    - Amazing! Tree Lovers must see this!
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve image
This forest is old-growth...and amazing thing to have in the eastern forests of the US where 99.99% percent of the forest has been cut-over in the 500 years of European settlement. It is thrilling, to walk through this preseve and realize that this is what Daniel Boone experienced. Low-lying brush is scarce and the tree canopy is way up high. Tree trucks are thick and big. It is a shame more forest was not put aside years ago to protect it, but at least we have this preserve. There is a small parking area and a trail one can hike on. Note: After parking your car, one must walk down a gravel road (perhaps 1/2 mile) next to a resort camp to get to the trail that leads into the heart of the preserve. See more..

    - Easy Trail with Incrediable View
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
Travel the scenic drive through Red River Gorge and stop at several pool over areas, but don't miss this trail. Take Chimney top road for 5 miles to the parking area. Then take the short walk out to the lookout for an amazing view. You can leave the trail at several places to walk over to the edge of the cliff. There are no rails in these areas and you will need to be very careful, but you are rewarded with amazing views. Be careful with children or rowdy teens! See more..

Emmert Falls Primitive Trail (1.1 miles) gently climbs through the hardwoods above, a trail spur leads to Emmert Falls and a pavilion with seating. Both trails converge at the “learning tree”, a 100-year-old Osage Orange Tree, a popular gathering spot with handmade sassafras benches. Its highlight during the spring is the wildflowers that grace the forest floor. Common species include Blue Bells, Dutchmen’s Britches, Shooting Stars, Wild Ginger, Trillium, and Yellow trout lilies. The trail includes a picnic area, hiking, and mountain biking trails. See more..
  30. 5.0 Tri-state Point (1 review)
    - Great Hike, Great View, 3 States in One Step
    Hiking Trails
    Tri-state Point image
This hiking terminus is a part of Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. The Gap itself is notch in the mountain that was love enough to cross by foot and wagon. However from the south side of the Gap, there is a hiking trail that will take you to the highpoint where 3 state, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee come together. From the mountain ridge you have good view into Middlesboro and you can see through the trees into both Tennessee and Virginia. However, the highlight is a gazebo over the point where the 3 states meet. Each state has a sign that tell about that state, its size, counties, state flower and bird. Still the unique attraction is the ability to be in 3 states at one time. There are not many other places this happens, especially on top of a mountain with a good trail leading to it. Be sure to visit when at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. See more..
  31. Historic Buttermilk Falls Trail (0 review)

    Historic Buttermilk Falls Trail image
The trail was initially developed in 1996 by turning 2.5 miles of a county road into a trail that connects Riverfront Park, on the banks of the Ohio River in Brandenburg east to Kentucky State Route 933. The trail winds through a wooded, scenic area along Flippins Run Creek. The Trail (2.5 miles) includes a wooden footbridge over one of the many streams and passes continuously running Buttermilk Falls. These falls are formed from a series of hillside springs that run throughout the year. See more..
