Camp Nelson National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service. It shares the story and preserves the site that was established in 1863 by the U.S. military as a large supply depot. In 1864 it became one of the largest recruitment and training centers for African American men who became soldiers and also a large refugee center for formerly enslaved people seeking Emancipation.See more..
This was a neat stop, although a bit out of the way from an interstate so you have to want to go there. I recommend starting at the visitor's center for the short video and museum tour before getting a driving tour pamphlet and heading out to see the historic locations. There are 10 stops highlighting the key areas from the prelude, during, and post battle. Some of the stops are better than others, but as a Civil War or history fan I suggest going to learn about how this small battle altered the war as much as the big battles like Gettysburg.See more..
If you are looking to educate yourself about our American history and grab some exercise, go visit the Camp Wildcat Battlefield. It is beautiful year round and just 10 minutes from the interstate. Hiking Trails are just steps away from the self guided tour.See more..
4.0Middle Creek National Battlefield(28 reviews) - Authentic Civil War Battlefield Monday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Battlefields
Less than 5 minutes from US 23 at Prestonsburg, KY, this was the largest and most significant Civil War battle in Eastern Kentucky that was fought during the early stages of the war. Wonderful battlefield nestled between the hills!See more..
A rare civil war event. Union troops outnumbered 5 to 1 prevailed against one of the Confederate's best commanders. At least one of the buildings on the tour was there during the battle and served as a hospital. More nice surprises on the tour. Do not recommend attempting this tour in the dark or when the roads are snow or ice covered since a steep hill is involved.See more..
First, I would like to say my review is limited to the museum and historical parts to the resort. There was so much I didn't do to include the hiking trails, campground, lodge, etc. I arrived at 3:30 PM which was way later than I wanted and the museum stays open through 4 PM. The lady working there was so kind to give me a short but detailed synopsis of the park, it's history and significance, and the artifacts in the museum. There was a video that she recommended and even stayed open a little past 4 PM so I could watch it. That was extremely kind! Another gentleman who worked for the the Resort came by as I was leaving to provide some more in-depth history on the battle, the mass grave made to hold the bodies of fallen militiamen found while building the roads and buildings, and have just a friendly conversation. Highly recommend if all employees put that much effort in to guests having a wonderful trip.See more..
1.0Ivy Mountain Battlefield(1 review) - Not actually anything here Battlefields Came to Huntington WV on a business trip and decided to check this historic location out. Upon arrival, there wasn't anything there but a coal refining plant which, while interesting to see, was not what we had expected.See more..
