  1. 4.5 Old Bardstown Village Civil War Museum (326 reviews)
    - Worth a stop! Great bang for your buck!

For one entry fee you get to see the historic village as well as 3 museums. While the museums can use a bit of updating, and perhaps a little more details on artifacts, they are each packed with tons of artifacts and relics! If you’re into history of any of the wars it is worth going by; your ticket admission is good for two days, so you can always come by the second day if it’s too much to do at once. There is a picnic pavilion in the historic village, but you do have to pay to go down there (included in admission fee). They could probably charge a little more and do some refreshing with the displays and add more detail and it still be worth it even for one of the three museums and the village. I would love to see the village with interpreters or for a festival. We couldn’t go in the walnut hull grinding mill but I would have liked to see that too. Overall, well worth it if you like American history. See more..

Here, you will experience the fascinating and inspiring history of one of America’s most successful and unconventional military leaders, General George S. Patton, Jr. General Patton exemplified the uncompromising determination of a born leader. He was relentless in the pursuit of victory from his command of the 1st Provisional Tank Brigade in World War I to his legendary career in the Mediterranean and European Theaters of World War II. Patton’s name was revered by his comrades and struck terror at the hearts of his enemies. In our exhibit halls, not only will you discover stories from Patton’s prolific military career, but you’ll also find an exclusive collection of artifacts spanning all the way back to his childhood in California and his participation in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. We look forward to seeing you at the General Patton Museum. ***NEWSFLASH: The 31W Gate is OPEN! Visitors should now enter our parking lot from the 31W entrance. See more..
  3. 4.5 Mill Springs Battlefield & Museum (49 reviews)
    - Civil War gem in KY
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Military Museums • Battlefields
Mill Springs Battlefield & Museum image
This was a neat stop, although a bit out of the way from an interstate so you have to want to go there. I recommend starting at the visitor's center for the short video and museum tour before getting a driving tour pamphlet and heading out to see the historic locations. There are 10 stops highlighting the key areas from the prelude, during, and post battle. Some of the stops are better than others, but as a Civil War or history fan I suggest going to learn about how this small battle altered the war as much as the big battles like Gettysburg. See more..

Kentucky has a rich military history. That history is both preserved and explained at the Kentucky Military History Museum. The State Arsenal for more than 100 years and a Civil War-era munitions factory, this Gothic Revival style building houses the exhibits “Kentucky Military Treasures” and “George M. Chinn: Sights Set on Innovation,” and 19th-century war records (available for use by appointment). The Kentucky Historical Society operates the museum with the Kentucky Department for Military Affairs. See more..

This was a neat stop. The museum is located on the site of Hooper Battery and former home of Fern Storer, a well-known food editor for the now defunct Cincinnati Post from 1951 to 1976. It houses several exhibits about Civil War history at large and of those units in the local area. Although no battles were fought here it is still a good stop that doesn't cost anything (donations suggested) and provides good information. There is parking on site and the grounds are covered in a variety of trees from all of the the country, each with signs. It is a beautiful walk in and of itself. See more..

The veterans in Letcher County are extremely proud to have an extensive collection and exhibit of wartime memorabilia housed at our museum located at 360 Main Street in Whitesburg. The museum’s collection has items dating back to the Civil War and continuing thru to today’s current battles. The pride of a grateful nation is on display. See more..
