4.5Dinosaur State Park(258 reviews) - The real thing! Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Natural History Museums
In August of 1966, bulldozer operator Edward McCarthy was excavating a rocky site for a state building. He turned over a slab of gray sandstone and saw something very exciting: six large, three-toed footprints. Within a few weeks of the discovery, state officials decided to preserve the site as a state park. Two seasons of careful excavation resulted in one of the largest on-site displays of dinosaur tracks in the world. Fossil tracks are named independently from fossil animals. No skeletal remains were found at the Rocky Hill site so scientists speculate that the animal was similar to Dilophosaurus based on the shape and size of the footprints and the age of the sandstone where they are found. Hear more during our interactive track talk! The Park offers school field trips, as well as family-oriented programming on weekends, school vacations, and during the summer months. The Park has several days where admission is free over the summer in June and August!See more..

The Shoreline Trolley Museum is a true em. We've lived in the area for 37 years and never visited it until now! What a wonderful surprise! It was a pure joy to be there. The trolleys are the real deal, including the actual "Streetcar Named Desire!" The crown jewel is the PATH train that survived 9/11. It brings that fateful day to life, serving as a time machine to 2001. Wow. Great volunteer staff including hilarious guys who drive the trolleys. The kids on the trolley were beaming with joy as they rolled along, and even got to ring the bell. This museum is a small gem and should be preserved and promoted for generations to come.See more..
Like any museum, the experience can be really enhanced by joining a guided tour. I visited the museum previously and walked through on my own - found that to be an okay experience. I went back with a friend and we went through with a docent and it was a completely different experience - we learned so much and saw the art in a very different way thanks to the interpretations and background. This Irish story is one that needs to be told more widely as it has important messages for life in this world today.See more..
4.0Lutz Children's Museum(50 reviews) - Fantastic Little Children's Museum Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
The Lutz Children's Museum is a great little children's museum. Know that it is small. It works well for children 7 and under. Depending on the interests of the child it is easy to spend an hour or two, but that is probably about it for keeping interest in most cases. We were there with our 3, 5, and 7 year old and had a lot of fun for almost two full hours, but that was long enough. If in the area with young children you should definitely stop by for a bit. It is fun and educational!See more..

Barker Character, Comic & Cartoon Museum in Cheshire, Connecticut is a unique institution, as it is one of the most complete expressions of an American childhood through the ages. The Museum houses the personal collection of Gloria and Herbert Barker, an assembling of almost 80,000 items that took over forty years to create. The Barkers were in a select group of people, back in the 1960s, who felt that the everyday items of childhood had a value for future generations, bringing back memories, or expressing a child’s life through the ordinary toys, lunchboxes, games and tools of common usage. Since the museum opened to the public in September of 1997, the Barker family has reached out to the community in many ways. They have welcomed everyone who visited the museum, from local families to tourists from around the world, and almost everywhere in-between.See more..

4.5Ukrainian Museum and Library(11 reviews) - The best kept secret in CT! Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Art Museums • History Museums
This is the best kept secret in Connecticut and I strongly encourage a visit! I visited on May 5th and was treated to a 1.5 hour personal tour by Taras Galonzka. In our conversations we learned that his parents and my grandparents were from the same area of eastern Galicia which became part of western Ukraine. The museum, originally built in 1833, is beautiful inside and out. They have rooms full of Ukrainian art, manuscripts, attire, pysanka, furniture, wood carvings, musical folk instruments, etc. Many pieces of art are from the 12th and 13th century. They have several manuscripts that pre-date the printing press by a couple hundred years. Their days and hours of operation are limited and a bit erratic, so call ahead. They hope to open more days and for longer periods of time shortly. Their website is not updated regularly but does have additional information.See more..

A group of teens is exploring the CT Art Trail this summer and this was our latest stop. The exhibition on miniatures was fascinating. We were Googling various techniques as we viewed. The Director, Paul, took time to give us a crash course in the history of printmaking which was admirable considering he was actively involved in a project during our visit. He shared that he began working at the Center at 14 which led to attending art school and returning to the Center as a professional working artist. He inspired our group of teens, especially those pursing the arts. We picnicked on the grounds. Wished we picked a day when the Mansion was open as well.See more..
