This is an absolutely gorgeous carousel. We are members of the National Carousel Association, so we came to see it. Put together by the Murphy Brothers, it has mostly horses carved by Charles Carmel but also a few Charles Looff horses and camel. Each animal is extremely well carved, deeply detailed and seamlessly painted. This carousel is well worth riding. The beach is also beautiful. It’s also a shell collector’s paradise.See more..

4.5Bantam Cinema & Arts Center(81 reviews) - A unique movie theater Thursday: 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM Movie Theaters • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Theaters
This is my favorite movie theater because of its history and the overall ambiance. Note; the two theaters themselves are nothing special. They're rather small and the seats are old but comfortable. But their popcorn is freshly popped with your choice of many condiments to put on it. There are homemade deserts, coffee, water and the regular movie theater candy. See more..

4.0Five Mile Point Light(51 reviews) - Off-season light house visit Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
We visited in mid-April when there was no admission fee. Plenty of parking and easy access to the lighthouse, and beach. Everything is closed during the night off season, including bathrooms, but there is one port-a-potty near the parking lot. The views were wonderful. We had a great time looking at shells and other sea life. There are picnic tables and a pavilion as well. We probably spent about an hour here. I can't imagine spending $30/day. See more..
4.5Heublein Tower(40 reviews) - A must visit...Amazing views, beautiful Tower/home atop of the mountain!! Points of Interest & Landmarks
First hike up to Heublein Tower and no regrets! It was a beautiful sunny day(March 18th, 2021) and the views from the top of mountain were amazing. It may be a little difficult first 20 mins or so for those who aren't in best shape but I urge you to try it. There are benches every so often so you can rest. I kept it moving thinking it'd be easier once I got momentum. The climb gets much easier as you get near the first look out area. Avoid going if it rained a day or 2 prior as it will be very muddy and slippery. A beautiful place to go for a day excursion, next time I'm bringing a pack filled with lunch and staying to see sunset. Have fun!!See more..
We were very lucky that we timed our visit to the church when we did. The organist, James Wetherald was practising pieces on the organ. When we walked in and saw the huge and stunning glass windows together with the sound of the organ, it was a bit overwhelming, to the point that I'll never forget it. To top it off, James gave us a little history lesson on this very unusual and architecturally significant church. Not to be missed!See more..

There is deep empathy for the fallen firefighters while visiting this memorial. To think of someone going to work and not coming home is a personal painful thought. To have known families where this has been the case is like an itch that can never be scratched. This memorial is an honor to view and quite humbling. I run out of words for the feelings.See more..

4.5Nathan Hale Schoolhouse(10 reviews) - Great stop for history buffs Points of Interest & Landmarks
I love these off the road little historical sites. The schoolhouse was closed when we arrived but we still were able to see inside the windows. It is a beautiful spot, overlooking a church and cemetery on one side and the river on the other. Wished we had been more observant to the open times but none the less it was a fun little stop. Hale schoolhouse was the site Nathan Hale taught school before enlisting to fight for the Continental Army and spy against the British in the American Revolutionary War. Nathan Hale, the CT state hero is known for saying, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Even if you only have a few minutes to stop by after hours, I would recommend it.See more..

Some natural & some from the archives. If you want to show off your captured photos you must keep at least one eye open. Also keep options open when you travel. See more..
As other reviews note, you can tour this small site and learn from the excellent signage and graphics. One can learn about the remarkable way that people of that earlier era created an industry around iron. Read how they perfected the process of turning ore into ingots, and how they harnessed the power of a local stream, using it to run an ingenious turbine which generated the heated compressed air needed for the blast furnace. And we think we are so clever sitting at our computers!See more..

In addition to the formal gallery space, the whole building, really, is a gallery as the vision of the founder of the museum is to allow students and staff to live amongst fine art, all the time. 4.5Henry Park & Fox Hill Tower(6 reviews) - An Iconic Place To Visualize with a Sightseeing View of Rockville Thursday: Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers
My Favorite Landmark In Town! Erected in 1939 in memorial of all veterans. War Memorial Tower on Fox Hill -- where there has the see-through view of downtown Rockville (which we call home!). Morrison Gallery is a contemporary art gallery specializing in modern and contemporary art as well as monumental sculpture in Kent, Connecticut.See more..
We didn't miss this impressive sculpture. It was dedicated to Hartford, Connecticut back in October 10, 1973 and commissioned by the trustees of the Ella Burr McManus Trust Fund, the sculpture is a memorial to McManus’s father, Alfred E. Burr, founder of the Hartford Times. So how appropriate to to be inspired by this majestic work by Alexander Calder. Has a leveled water fountain underneath that would be great for little ones (and big people too), to play. I say it can be romantic as you have a picture taken under his framed work.See more..

Lounsbury House, a National Historic Site, was built in 1896 by former Connecticut Governor Phineas C. Lounsbury. While attending the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, Governor Lounsbury was so taken by the Connecticut State Building that he built a replica to serve as his family home. 4.0The Old Store Gift Shop & Museum(1 review) - A visit to an old timey New England store/museum with modern merchandise Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks When you travel through Sherman, CT, in the heart of the little town is a lovely 200 year old mercantile exchange, (store.) It's been a store for 200 years and the leaning wood floors and big pane windows along with the creaks tell you so. Half the building is a museum featuring a time before Candlewood Lake including Native American articles found in the area and the history of the town. The other half is a wonderful store of probably 1,000 different items that are selected by the all volunteer staff. Wonderful scarves, purses, children's items, hostess gifts, costume jewelry and unusual cool things. There is even an old candy counter. Definitely worth the stop to see the old photos in the museum, check your weight on the penny scale and shop. Parking in back or at the next door library.See more..
5.0Old Farm School(1 review) - Restored 1796 - School House Points of Interest & Landmarks Grew up down the street and used to walk by this building on my way to school. It now sits across the street from its original location since the road was widened. It is open for a few hours on Sunday and manned by volunteers, and is a free attraction. This sunny afternoon, I saw a few charming volunteers sitting under a shade tree with the school house door open. Dating back to 1796, with a few original desks, it has lovely wide board floors, high ceilings. School house rules are posted on the walls and the teachers podium is at the front. It has a second floor which is "newer" with desks from. he 1840's. In the upper level is the rope to the original school bell dated 1798, and if you are lucky, they may let you ring it. First floor houses a few vintage items. You can spend a few minutes or more enjoying this unpretentious and faithful landmark. Something many drive by daily and few take the time to befriend. Charming!!!See more..
4.0Huguenot House(1 review) - Museum Complex at Martin Park Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Ghost Towns
The Makens Bemont House, also known as the Huguenot House, the Goodwin Schoolhouse and Burnham Blacksmith Shop are all part of the museum complex at Martin Park. The East Hartford Historical Society offers excellent tours (there are steep stairs to 2nd floor) during the summer months, but you can walk around the site anytime the park is open. There is talk (check different web sites for "evidence") that the Makens Bemont House is haunted.See more..
