4.5Grove Street Cemetery(80 reviews) - Very old and beautiful cemetery Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Cemeteries
I am an amateur genealogist and have been a volunteer for findagrave.org for about 6 years. I visited this cemetery after taking a tour of the crypt under one of the churches on the New Haven Green. The monuments and family plots are extremely ornate and beautiful. They are still in incredible shape after 200 years or more! It is a peaceful place and the history of the cities prominent families and not so prominent families is chronicled there. Lots can be learned from the birth and death dates of the remains interred there and in every cemetery. It is worth a leisurely walk through the gravesites. I intend to go back with a list of the stones that people have requested photos of for findagrave.com. Also, a plus......... parking is free within the cemetery walls.See more..
Ok, I had just a few hours to kill before flying out and I stopped here and the Old State House. I walked the block from the Old State House to the cemetery and wanted to browse through the cemetery after seeing it on TripAdvisor. When I arrived there was a high school teacher and four young girls offering free tours. Apparently they are part of a program offering local youth part time work. Two of the young ladies took me on a tour of the grounds pointing out the interesting graves and explaining the local lore behind the site. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and I appreciated the time the young ladies spent learning about their own city. This is a great place, with graves from the mid-17th Century to the mid-19th Century.See more..
5.0Cedar Hill Cemetery(57 reviews) - Rest in Peace Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Cemeteries
We have lived in the Hartford area for over 50 years and never visited this place where many of CT's rich and famous are buried. Recently they celebrated their 150 year anniversary with an event called "Beyond the Gates". It was a fascinating day with which included the Governor's Foot Guard Band and many other performers. They do have other events through out the year which should be interesting as well. Even if nothing is going on, you can walk through the grounds, which are lovely and well maintained. Perhaps something of the likes of J.P. Morgan, Samuel Colt, Audrey Hepburn, or Wallace Stevens will rub off on you as you walk past their graves.See more..
I was raised in Norwalk, but on a recent trip back, I happened to wander into this cemetery. There were many familiar names, of Norwalk Families that have been there since before the Revolutionary war, some of whose descendants I have gone to school with, or for whom streets are named in Norwalk.See more..
We came to Mill Hill for the purpose of finding some graves of our family from the 1700's. We parked in the funeral parlor next to the cemetery. We found what we were looking for Nathan St. John , so the trip was successful . Many of the older graves can still be read.See more..
