4.5Cathedral of St Joseph(52 reviews) - Jawdroppingly beautiful stained-glass windows. Worth a visit... Thursday: 7:30 AM - 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Religious Sites
This cathedral was not on our radar when we placed Hartford on our travel itinerary. We were heading towards the Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe houses (just up the road) when we noticed it. Having an interest in such buildings, it immediately drew my attention. Despite the arguably blend and grey colored facade, we decided to check it out. And we are glad we did! My jaw dropped... Its interior was sensational. It certainly has the wow-factor! The stained-glass windows were absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth a quick visit!See more..
Gorgeous grounds & walking trails. Large and well-kept property. Outdoor "chapel" has a great layout with seating options in shaded areas. Bathrooms available. Cafe & gift shop were closed when we visited. Definitely a peaceful retreat and a nice place to reflect & pray. Would definitely go back again if we're in the area.See more..

4.5Holy Land USA Ruins(17 reviews) - As seen in Barbara Loden's 1970 movie Wanda!! Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
After years of driving by this place on I-84, it was finally time to visit. The curious and later on sad history of this place was the clear draw. Not unlike its host city, Holy Land was once a thriving place, attracting visitors from all over. Following its closure in the 1980's it fell into a long period of decay. Currently it appears that some efforts have been made to repair & clean up the site. You can walk through the site without too much difficulty. The top of the hill offers a great view. Lets dig into the super cool history of the place. The 1970's indie film Wanda, directed by Barbara Loden includes a scene filmed on site here. Kinda random for a movie that takes place in rural Pennsylvania. It offers a very cool view of what Holy Land looked like long before its closure.See more..

I took a ride to Morris, Ct. to visit this Temple. I actually went to just take some photos. When I saw the door to the Temple open and saw the monk at the alter I asked if I could enter and he welcomed me in. You leave your shoes at the door. When I entered a woman came over and asked if I wanted information or just to observe and take photos. I said both. I ask how I should behave since I didn't want to be disrespectful. Also I wanted to make a contribution since they were praying for the dead and gifts were brought. She told me I had to get on my knees and go to the Monk and offer it to him. You then extend your wrist which he puts on three littles bracelets and gives you a blessing. Everyone was so warm and friendly and wanted to talk. They offered me water, tea, coffee, cookies, and fruit. I then walked the beautiful grounds and took photos. The Temples are open on Sunday. You can walk the grounds other days but no one is there and I don't think the Temples are openSee more..

St. Stephen’s church is a lovely little church. Unfortunately I stopped off on midday on a Saturday and it wasn’t open. I would have loved to have a look inside. The outside is nice and quiet. There is a bench in the corner right under the bell to have a seat and enjoy the peacefulness. According to the side they have many activities and services are on Sunday. See more..

3.0Saint Mark the Evangelist Church(1 review) - Quite a Nice Small Village Parish Thursday: Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Saint Mark’s is a comfy little church in West Hartford, handy to Farmington where the Toos had spent the night. Perched at the top of a hill with an enormous parking lot, the red brick building with sparkling white trim is silhouted to great advantage. Currently, Sunday Mass is celebrated only at 10:30AM. Be sure to check with one of the online mass time providers, as this is obviously subject to change. The church interior is fresh and new looking with spacious pews and modern decor. The choir is exceptional, and our celebrant handed off the homily to a visiting priest who did a scholarly and memorable job. All in all, St Mark’s is just exactly what a neighborhood parish should be. We found our visit very much on the inspiring side.See more..
