The Mark Twain House & Museum, a National Historic Landmark in Hartford, Connecticut, was the home of America's greatest author, Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) and his family from 1874 to 1891. It is also where Twain lived when he wrote his most important works, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and The Pauper and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. A stunning example of Picturesque Gothic architecture, the 25-room home features a dramatic grand hall, a lush glass conservatory, a grand library and the handsome billiard room where Twain wrote his famous books. The Webster Bank Museum Center at The Mark Twain House & Museum offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about Mark Twain, his family, the historic house, and the author's legacy. Dinosaur State Park image
In August of 1966, bulldozer operator Edward McCarthy was excavating a rocky site for a state building. He turned over a slab of gray sandstone and saw something very exciting: six large, three-toed footprints. Within a few weeks of the discovery, state officials decided to preserve the site as a state park. Two seasons of careful excavation resulted in one of the largest on-site displays of dinosaur tracks in the world. Fossil tracks are named independently from fossil animals. No skeletal remains were found at the Rocky Hill site so scientists speculate that the animal was similar to Dilophosaurus based on the shape and size of the footprints and the age of the sandstone where they are found. Hear more during our interactive track talk! The Park offers school field trips, as well as family-oriented programming on weekends, school vacations, and during the summer months. The Park has several days where admission is free over the summer in June and August! See more..

Great spot - the submarine docked outside is quite impressive and the walkthrough is fun. Just be careful going through it, easy to bang knees on metal protrusions. 12. 4.5 Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum (108 reviews)
    - Gilded Age in Norwalk CT!
Thursday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • History Museums
    Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum image
The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is regarded as one of the earliest and finest surviving Second Empire Style country houses ever built in the United States. The 62-room mansion was built by banker-railroad tycoon LeGrand Lockwood, who in 1864 began construction of his estate on the Norwalk River in Norwalk, Connecticut. Designed by European-trained, New York-based architect Detlef Lienau, the mansion, which was completed in 1868 at a cost of over $2,000,000.00 in 1868 currency, is considered his most significant surviving work. American craftsmen, along with many immigrant artisans, were employed in the construction of the house. Following Mr. Lockwood's financial reversal in 1869 and his untimely death in 1872, his wife, Ann Louisa Benedict Lockwood, lost the house in foreclosure to the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad in 1874. At the time, Mrs. Lockwood owed one remaining mortgage payment of $90,000 - Mr. Lockwood had paid off $310,000 of his mortgage which he took out following the tragic financial disaster of Black Friday in 1869. After remaining unoccupied for two years, the mansion was purchased in 1876 by Charles Drelincourt Mathews, a wealthy provisions merchant who retired at an early age. The purchase price from the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad astonished many. The house, not even a decade old, along with its numerous outbuildings within the 30-acre compound, was sold for a fraction of its value: $90,000.00 - the last payment owed by Mrs. Lockwood. However, much work had to be done in order to occupy the now unfurnished mansion and the grounds, never completed, were commissioned to Fredrick Law Olmstead. Charles and Rebecca had 4 children: Lillie, Florence, Charles Thompson, and Harold. Lillie and Harold both married, had children, and summered at the Mansion; Florence and Charles never married and lived at their townhouse at 812 Fifth Avenue in NYC in the winter or when not traveling throughout Europe. 19. 4.5 New Haven Museum (52 reviews)
    - A gem hidden in plain sight
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM History Museums
    New Haven Museum image
I've driven past this museum for years and finally went in for a visit. Free parking in the rear of the museum and free admission thanks to a library pass started the trip out on a high note, and our experience exceeded expectations. The history of New Haven exhibit takes you from colonial days up to the mid 1900s with artifacts (Eli Whitney's cotton gin!), paintings, maps that were fascinating to examine in detail, interesting explanations, and even audio guides with interesting details read by enthusiastic narrators playing historical figures. There is also an Amistad exhibit on the first floor, and a decorative arts display with a period room. I was especially taken with the handmade dollhouse from the 1800s that's jam packed with details and has illumination available. Upstairs, the circular gallery was home to an interesting exhibit on New Haven's own "Monuments Man" and his experiences in WWII. The "Made in New Haven" exhibit was interesting and child friendly, with interactive postcards and a make your own pizza game available. We were encouraged to unlace the corset on display and try it on ourselves, but I couldn't convince my travel companion to pose for a photo! By the time I reached the maritime exhibit, my attention was wandering a bit but it included some lovely paintings and information about the local oystering industry. And the exhibit about the openings at the local Shubert Theater was entertaining as well. There are restrooms and an elevator, as well as a small gift shop. Serious researchers are invited into the library, and there is an auditorium on the upper level. No food or drink is permitted in the museum and indeed none is available (although a short walk brings you to many choices downtown). See more..

  23. 5.0 Danbury Museum & Historical Society (30 reviews)
    - A fascinating trip into Danbury’s past
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
Danbury Museum & Historical Society image
The Danbury Museum & Historical Society Authority acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets Danbury's past. Situated in downtown Danbury, the museum preserves the John and Mary rider House 9c.1785), the Dodd Hat Shop (c. 1790), the Marian Anderson Studio, the old King Street Schoolhouse, the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Charles Ives Birthplace. Huntington Hall, a modern exhibit building contains the museum offices and a research library. The Danbury Museum and Historical Society has evolved out of efforts to preserve endangered historic properties. One of the City's oldest structures, the Rider House on Main Street, would have been demolished in 1941 to make way for a gas station had it not been for the intervention of concerned citizens (including the Mary Wooster DAR Chapter). After raising money to purchase this property, these citizens found the Danbury Historical and Arts Center. A merger, in 1947, between the Scott-Fanton Museum and the Danbury Historical and Arts Center, saw the creation of the Danbury Scott Fanton Museum & Historical Society Inc. During the 1950's and 60's, the museum acquired the John Dodd Shop, the Ward House, the Charles Ives birthplace, two one room schoolhouses and erected Huntington Hall, where many of its exhibits have been displayed. In 2004, theMuseum was thrilled to add the Marian Anderson Studio to its collection. Famed opera singer Marian Anderson lived in danbury for over 50 years. It was moved to the Main Street campus of the museum in 1999. Restoration of the studio was completed in early 2004. 2006 saw the merger of the Danbury Scott Fanton Museum with the City of Danbury and a new entity was born on July 1, 2008 . . . the Danbury Museum and Historical Society Authority. Tours of the historic buildings on our Main Street campus are available on Saturdays only from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the winter season. I went with several friends to the annual Gingerbread Festival that they hold at Wood Library each year. It exceeded my expectations! There were easily 100 Gingerbread Houses of varying degrees of expertise scattered all throughout the building. Some were traditional gingerbread houses with candy accents, others were replicas of area landmarks. There was no theme to the houses so I saw everything from a candy baseball field, to a gingerbread car club, The Grinch overlooking Whoville and Santa stuck in a chimney. There was holiday music playing in the background and snowflakes and decorations all over the building. It really was enchanting. They also had a "shop" set up off to the side selling crafts and holiday gifts along with baked goods. It was a fun afternoon. Although the event was free we were happy to drop a few dollars in the donation jar on our way out. We will definitely be back. See more..

This is the best kept secret in Connecticut and I strongly encourage a visit! I visited on May 5th and was treated to a 1.5 hour personal tour by Taras Galonzka. In our conversations we learned that his parents and my grandparents were from the same area of eastern Galicia which became part of western Ukraine. The museum, originally built in 1833, is beautiful inside and out. They have rooms full of Ukrainian art, manuscripts, attire, pysanka, furniture, wood carvings, musical folk instruments, etc. Many pieces of art are from the 12th and 13th century. They have several manuscripts that pre-date the printing press by a couple hundred years. Their days and hours of operation are limited and a bit erratic, so call ahead. They hope to open more days and for longer periods of time shortly. Their website is not updated regularly but does have additional information. See more..

  46. 2.0 Holley-Williams House (1 review)
    - This museum closed, was sold, and is now a private residence
    Gardens • History Museums
When it was still open it was a nice small town museum, mostly dedicated to the history of one local family that was prominent in the iron business many years ago. However, if you weren't a Holley or a Williams, or didn't really find looking around old houses very satisfying, it wasn't the kind of visit you would be apt to repeat. They had an enactor who was very good as a Revolutionary soldier (cannons for the Revolutionary War were made nearby) and really knew his history, but even he couldn't make the site into the attraction I think people hoped it would become. I stopped in to see if I could get some help in finding info on Cornish ancestors. The lady there was a little brusque at first but when she realized I had a fair bit of genealogy knowledge she softened up a bit. It's a nice place with great resources and helpful staff, but it's not necessarily for a beginner. If you go, have a few names and lineages in place already. See more..
