    African Burying Ground image
Wow! Powerful outdoor experience. We visited on a sunny Friday morning. We stayed at the downtown Hampton Inn and walked less than 10 minutes to the African Burying Ground. Be sure to reach all the signage posted on the area because valuable information is written there. Kudos to the citizens of Portsmouth for such a worthwhile endeavor. The collective history of the peoples of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is inspiring and promising. May we embrace our past, learn from it and heal together. See more..

Thank goodness we have Alan Shepard, because if Franklin Pierce were our only New Hampshire native of note, that would be sad. But, the Pierce memorial is just one of many interesting historical icons in the city. Go to the state house. See more..

  8. 3.0 Endicott Rock State Historic Site (7 reviews)
    - It's cool for history people
    Monuments & Statues
It'll take 10 minutes to check this out. It's a rock under a cage with a statue on top of it. The rock was originally an island in the middle of this channel. Now it's been merged with the land and is a park. Checking out the inscriptions on the rock is really neat. Lots of people get their photo taken next to it in the same pose as the indian. See more..

  10. 4.0 Major Andrew McClary Marker (1 review)
    - CONTINENTAL ARMY OFFICER IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
    Monuments & Statues
    Major Andrew McClary Marker image
This New Hampshire Historic Highway Marker commemorates Andrew McClary, who came to New Hampshire with his parents at age 16. He became a patriot and served in the Continental Army in the American Revolution. He took part in the raid on Fort William & Mary in New Castle in December 1774 – some four months before the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He was a farmer with his homestead not far from where the historic marker stands today. He was doing farm work when heard that there would be a battle at Breed’s Hill, more commonly called Bunker Hill, in Charlestown, MA. He left immediately to answer the call to duty. He was second in command to General John Stark. Andrew McClary was mortally wounded by a British cannonball just as the Battle of Bunker Hill was ending. Fort McClary in Kittery Point, Maine is named for him. I rate this marker at 4.50 as it has more information than most of these state historic markers. 11. 4.0 War Dog Memorial (1 review)
    - LIFE-SIZE, REALISTIC-LOOKING MEMORIAL TO WAR DOGS
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    War Dog Memorial image
The War Dog Memorial is in Pine Grove Cemetery west of Calef’s Country Store and East of the Goodwill Conservation Area and the Winnie The Pooh Trail. There is a sign for it along Rt. 9. The memorial is almost directly behind the Barrington Historical Society building and is next to the Veteran’s Memorial. It was dedicated in June 2002 by the American Legion Post 114 of Barrington. I’ve visited the two adjacent memorials a number of times when traveling Rt. 9 or after a visit to Calef’s Country Store. I find that the most interesting things about the dog sculpture of a German Shepherd are that it is life-size and that the coat is textured and variegated which gives it an extremely realistic appearance. I marvel at it and the artistry that created it every time I see it. For its significance and appearance, I rate the War Dog Memorial at 4.50 and highly recommend stopping by for a look at it. 12. 4.0 Soldiers And Sailors Monument (1 review)
    - DOVER’S CIVIL WAR MONUMENT
    Monuments & Statues
    Soldiers And Sailors Monument image
The Soldiers and Sailors Monument sits on the traffic circle on the roadway in between the Dover Public Library and The McConnell Center. I pass closely by this monument frequently when I go to either of the two buildings. It commemorates the veterans of the American Civil War. It was financed by a local veteran who fought in that war. It was dedicated in 1912. At over 41 feet high, I think that the granite and bronze monument is noteworthy. A Union soldier holding the flag is on top with a sailor and a soldier on the pedestals below. My favorite part of the monument is the bas relief eagle. I think of this monument as patriotic public art. I rate the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 4.25 and can recommend a visit to view it. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. 13. 5.0 John Parker Hale Statue (1 review)
    - One of the Greatest Inscriptions Ever
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Visitors note statues of Franklin Pierce (president), Daniel Webster (senator), and John Stark (general), but many times when passing through the State House grounds (I live in Concord), I have had to expressly ask them to take at the statue of John P. Hale, who, as a leading member of the Free Soil Party and its presidential candidate (against Pierce!), became anathema to the Democratic Party in the state. The inscription on the statue is quite simply one of the most moving ever composed. See more..
